It's a Dog's Life...at ENMU!

Vic and Tory are two former racing Greyhounds who were welcomed to the ENMU family on Dec. 1, 2009. The pair is quickly becoming the most popular co-eds on campus! The mascots live on-campus with two student roommates in their forever home, an apartment on-campus. These Greyhounds have free reign of the apartment and can often be seen snoozing on one of the roommates beds or on the couch.

A Day in the Life

Vic and Tory spend their daytime hours in "doggie daycare" at the ENMU Agriculture Building, a newly renovated building housing classrooms, offices, labs and Vic and Tory’s playroom. During their days, Vic and Tory are walked on leads across campus, they have free-play time inside a gated yard, and they interact with the Hound Handlers. They also have rest-time, as desired, in their playroom which is equipped with crates and vet-approved dog beds which mimic their space at home. Vic and Tory go home at the end of the day with their roommates and can be seen attending various meetings on-campus. Vic and Tory are also involved in regular obedience training and will begin training as therapy dogs in the near future.

Greyhound Mascot Program

The program is overseen by the Greyhound Committee, comprised of University community members from a broad range of constituencies including ASENMU, Board of Regents, Athletics, Student Affairs, Communication Services, University Relations, Presidents Ambassadors, Agriculture/Pre-Vet program, Hound Handlers and Hound Families/Roommates. The program, first and foremost, honors Vic and Tory’s physical and emotional needs. Next, they act as official ambassadors for Eastern New Mexico University by attending official school functions, including home athletic events and other official events.

Vic and Tory’s Adoption

Adoption was facilitated through New Mexico Greyhound Connection (GPA-NM), the New Mexico chapter of Greyhound Pets of America (GPA). GPA is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation founded in 1987 for the purpose of finding homes for ex-racing Greyhounds and educating the public on the suitability and availability of Greyhounds as pets. GPA is the largest non-profit Greyhound adoption group in America. Vic and Tory were hand selected for their calm, loving temperament; they come to ENMU from Phoenix. GPA-NM officials visited the ENMU campus to assess their housing and exercise arrangements and worked closely with ENMU to ensure Vic and Tory’s physical and emotional needs were of utmost concern. Vic and Tory are well-suited for crowd situations. They enjoy the love and attention they receive; however, the University relies on Dr. Darron Smith, ENMU’s assistant professor of agriculture, Dr. David S. Hudson, DVM, the Pre-Vet Club, Hound Handlers and roommates to gauge the dogs’ comfort in being in any public situation.

Veterinary and Nutritional Needs

Upon arrival on campus, Vic and Tory were greeted by their official veterinarian, Dr. David S. Hudson of All Pets Animal Hospital in Clovis. Dr. Hudson is an alumnus of ENMU and is donating his time and energy to Vic and Tory. He has given both dogs a clean bill of health. They are young, healthy, strong dogs. PMI Nutrition has signed on as our Greyhound food sponsor. The Red Flannel line of dog food is designed to address the unique needs of large breed adult dogs. Red Flannel exceeds stringent industry standards with premium quality ingredients, nutrition and digestibility.
