Family:
Sapindaceae
Description
Large tree with an equal spread, in a broad, somewhat irregular globe-shape. Some trees appear vase-shaped. Height is 30–40 ft. (9–12 m). Leaves are 2–4 in. (5–10 cm) long, even pinnately compound or odd pinnately compound. They are oblong and green. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Bark is thin and easily damaged. Flowers are yellow in color and bloom in summer. Fruit is 1–3 in. (2–7 cm) long, elongated and oval. It is brown or green and remains on the tree.
Habitat
Mostly in clay, loam, sand, acidic or alkaline areas. Also found in extended flooding or well-drained areas. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This is considered a city tolerant tree due to tolerance to air pollution and ability to withstand drought, heat and alkaline soils. The seed pods look like brown Chinese lanterns and are held on the tree well in the fall.
