Description
Large tree with blue-green foliage and a conical crown of stout, horizontal branches in rows. Height is 70–100 ft. (21–30 m). Diameter is 1.5–3 ft. (0.5–0.9 m). Needles are 0.75–1.25 in. (2–2.8 cm) spreading on all sides of a twig from very short leaf stalks. They are four-angled, sharp-pointed, and stiff with resinous odor when crushed. Dull blue-green or bluish with whitish lines. Bark is gray or brown, furrowed and scaly. Cones are 2.25–4 in. (6–10 cm) long. They are cylindrical, mostly stalkless, and shiny light brown.
Habitat
Narrow bottomlands along mountain streams, often in pure stands. Native to New Mexico.
Discussion
Some cultivated varieties have dramatic bluish-white and silvery-white foliage. This species is popular for Christmas trees, and is also used for windbreaks.
