Description
Tree with rounded crown of drooping branches and the smallest leaves of any native elm. Height is 80 ft. (24 m). Diameter is 2 ft. (0.6 m). Leaves are 1–2 in. (2.5–5 cm) long and 0.5–1in. (1.2–2.5 cm) wide. The leaves are elliptical or lance shaped, blunt or pointed at the tip. Shiny or dark green and rough above, with soft hairs beneath. Bark is light brown and furrowed into scaly ridges. Flowers are 0.13 in. (3 mm) wide and greenish. Fruit is 0.38–0.5 in. (10–12 mm) long, elliptical flat one-seeded samaras.
Habitat
Moist soils along streams and also upland limestone hills, mixed with various hardwoods. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This tree is the common native elm in East Texas where it is planted for shade.
