Description
Shrub or small tree with short trunk and widely spreading branches. Height is 20 ft. (6 m). Diameter is 4 in. (10 cm). Leaves are 1–2.5 in. (2.5–6 cm) long, 0.63–1.75 in. (1.5–4.5 cm) wide, broadly ovate, coarsely saw-toothed and shallow lobed. The leaves are shiny green above, paler and prominently veined beneath. Bark is gray or reddish brown, thin and scaly. Flowers have five white petals and are nearly 0.75 in. (2 cm) wide. Fruit is 0.38 in. (10 mm) in diameter, orange red to brown or blackish.
Habitat
Along streams and in moist canyon soils. Usually with pinions, junipers, and Ponderosa pine. Native to New Mexico.
Discussion
Scientific name means “red-footed” or “red-stalked”, and refers to the leafstalks. Cerro is Spanish for hill based on specimens collected at Cerro Summit in Colorado.
