Description
Narrowly pyramidal to columnar tree that produces masses of white flowers in early spring and brilliant foliage in fall. Height is 30–50 ft. (9–15 m). Leaves are 1–3 in. (2.5–7.5 cm) long, heart-shaped with wavy edges. They turn yellow, orange and red in the fall. Flowers are white, five-petaled and grouped in clusters. They bloom before leaves appear, in April–May. Fruit is 0.5 in. (1.2 cm) round pome.
Habitat
Introduced species found in disturbed habitats, roadsides and fields. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This is a ubiquitous street tree in many eastern cites and a landscaping plant throughout the east. It withstands the rigors of urban living, but is widely considered over planted. This tree is spreading into natural habitats and is considered an invasive weed.
