Description
Small, irregularly-shaped evergreen tree. Height is 25–30 ft. (7–9 m). Needles are 2–4 in. (5–10 cm) long. Bark is brown and lacks thorns. Flowers are yellow and bloom in spring. Fruit is 1–3 in. (2–7 cm) long,cone-shaped and brown in color.
Habitat
Mostly clay, dry or sandy soil. Also found in extremely salty and alkaline areas. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This tree can be successfully trained into a bonsai or small specimen plant with selective pruning. It is very tolerant to drought. Its growth rate is dependent upon conditions.
