Description
A dense, upright, multi-stemmed, shrub. Height is 12–15 ft. (3–4 m). Bark is gray-brown and smooth. Leaves are 1–2.5 in. (2–5 cm) long, opposite and narrowly ovate. They are shiny dark green above, lighter beneath. The flowers are 1–2 in. (2–4 cm) long, white often very dense and fragrant. The fruit are bluish black drupes 0.25 in. (0.5 cm) long.
Habitat
Disturbed habitats, roadsides, open fields, open woods, and forest edges. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
Spreads by seeds in bird droppings, has become a major invasive species in North America.
