Description
Large irregular, pyramidal tree. Height is 10–15 ft. (3–4 m). Needles are less than 2 in. (5 cm) long, scale-like and green. They do not change color in the fall. Bark is brown and lacks thorns. Flowers are yellow, green or brown and inconspicuous. Fruit is less than 0.5 in. (1 cm) long, oval or round, and blue in color. It does not attract wildlife.
Habitat
Mostly well-drained soil. Also found in alkaline soil. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This tree grows into a narrow cone shape when young, then opens up as the plant ages. It is quite drought-tolerant but requires well-drained soil to avoid root rot. Without pruning, this juniper can develop into a showcase specimen.
