Description
Introduced tree with a straight trunk and dense, rounded, spreading crown of dark green foliage. Height is 60 ft. (18 m). Diameter is 2 ft. (0.6 m). Needles are 3.5–6 in. (9–15 m), two in a bundle, stiff , shiny, and dark green. Bark is dark gray, thick, rough, and furrowed. Cones are 2–3 in. (5–7.5 cm) long, 1–1.25 in. (2.5–3 cm) wide, egg shaped, and shiny yellow brown.
Habitat
Hardy except in coldest, driest, and hottest regions. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
Austrian pine is one of the more common introduced ornamentals. It is tolerant of smoke, dust, and dry soil.
