Description
Introduced. Large, many-branched tree. Height is 80 ft. (24 m). Diameter is 2 ft. (0.6 m). The leaves of this tree are 2.5–4 in. (6–10 m) long and nearly as wide. They are ovate, three- or five-lobed and maple-like. Dark green above, and white or silverish beneath. The bark is whitish-gray, smooth, becoming rough and furrowed at the base. Flowers are catkins 1.5–3 in. (4–7.5 cm) long and densely covered with white hairs. The male and female flowers are found on separate trees. The fruit are 0.2 in. (5 mm) long, and capsules with many seeds.

Discussion
This tree was probably introduced in colonial times. Many agencies now classify this tree as an invasive alien plant.
