Description
Small ornamental with a short trunk or several trunks and a very broad, flattened crown of spreading branches, with showy pink flower clusters. Height is 20 ft. (6 m). Diameter is 8 in. (20 cm). Leaves are 6–15 in. (15–38 cm) long, bipinnately compound, fernlike with five to twelve pairs of side axes covered with fine hairs. Bark is blackish or gray and nearly smooth. Flowers are more than 1 in. (2.5 cm) long with threadlike pink stamens turning whitish toward the base. They are grouped at the ends of the twigs. Fruit is 5–8 in. (13–39 cm) long. It is a flat pointed oblong pod, producing several beanlike shiny brown seeds.
Habitat
Native from Iran to China. This species has become naturalized in the eastern United States. Non-native to New Mexico.
Discussion
This is the hardiest tree of the genus Albizia. This tree is often called the “Mimosa-tree” because the flowers are similar to those of the genus Mimosa.
