CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – In the fall, we will be initiating a new student group, the President's Ambassadors, to assist with University recruiting and University special
events. The qualifications for this group can be found in the attachment.
I need your help in identifying students who will represent the University
well. We will try to select a cross-section of students, and twenty
students will be selected this spring and will be trained before the
beginning of the fall semester. The students selected to be Ambassadors
will receive some type of stipend for the work.

Please take the time to consider your students and use the attached
nomination form to nominate those that you would like to see serve as
representatives for Eastern. We will need the nominations sent to me no
later than Friday, April 5. This will give us the opportunity to check
grade points and send application forms to the nominees. The applicants
will be asked to complete an interview process, and the final twenty plus 3
or 4 alternates will be selected. Please call if you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration.– Steven Gamble

Questions addressed will include: What specific controversies surround the teaching of evolution in the schools? What are the standards for teaching evolution in New Mexico schools? What is the National Science Teachers Association's position on the teaching of evolution in the schools? What issues and challenges do science teachers in New Mexico and around the nation face when teaching evolution?

Readings: Those attending are encouraged to read the NSTA's Position Statement on the Teaching of Evolution (http://www.nsta.org/positionstatement&id=10) and the National Academy of Science's "Evolution and the National Science Education Standards," (http://books.nap.edu/html/evolution98/evol4.html) and to browse the National Center for Science Education's news accounts of current controversies over the teaching of evolution in schools in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Washington (http://natcenscied.org/default.asp).

NOVEL METHODS IN CANCER DIAGNOSTICS LECTURE SET – Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, ENMU Chapter, and the Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer Program present Dr. Josef Alfons Käs, Center for Nonlinear Dynamics, The University of Texas, will speak on Novel Methods in Cancer Diagnostics on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in the Becky Sharp Auditorium of the College of Business. The lecture is free and the public is invited.

Josef Käs is an assistant professor of physics at the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics and the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. from the Technische Universität München. His research involves the next big challenge for physics: studies of soft condensed matter physics on the scale of nanometers to tens of microns, i.e., on the scale of proteins and cells, in complex biological matter--often far from equilibrium and frequently behaving in a highly nonlinear manner. "There has been tremendous progress in molecular biology," Käs says. "Nevertheless, many of the questions addressed by molecular biology can only be understood by developing a novel combination of nanosciences and soft condensed matter physics." He says one of the most appealing aspects of this synergetic research in physics, chemistry and biology is that it simultaneously advances fundamental science and provides novel applications in biomedicine and materials sciences.

ENMU VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR TRASH WALK – University individuals and organizations need to mark the morning of April 20 on their calendars. On this date, the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, the Pride In Portales Committee and the City of Portales will hold the annual Great American Trash Pick-up to rid our community of unsightly trash and litter. As always, the event will consist of two activities. Those campus groups that have adopted a mile of highway in Roosevelt County are asked to police their miles on that day. Bags of trash can either be left off the side of the road for County pickup or they may be brought back in to town for disposal. City dump trucks will be stationed in the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce for this purpose.

Too, the Chamber is asking for additional student volunteers on April 20 to help clean up within Portales and on Eastern's Campus. As always, those groups and individuals willing to help should plan to meet behind the Chamber building around 9:30 a.m. on the 20th for assignments and supplies. At noon, everyone is invited back to City Park for a Hot Dog Picnic and Awards Ceremony. Many prizes and cash awards will be distributed as the Chamber's way of showing its appreciation to the participants. In order to adequately prepare for food and cleanup assignments, groups intending to participate in this year's Great American Trash Pick-up should contact Dr. Patrick Rucker, Eastern New Mexico University, Station 37 at 562.2092 or 359-0038 the week of April 12. (Email: Patrick.Rucker@enmu.edu)

This year marks the fifteenth consecutive year for this worthy event. At all previous events, Eastern's student body has been amply represented. So, we expect a good turnout from the campus again this year......and thanks, in advance, for being a Pride In Portales volunteer.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR SET – The Scholastic Book Fair, sponsored by the Student Council for Exceptional children is set for April 8-11 in the Education Building Foyer from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on April 12 in the COB Becky Sharp Auditorium Foyer from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cash, checks and credit cards accepted for all purchases.
