Announcements

These Announcements were submitted to the Monday Memo by University Community Members (employees, students and retirees). Announcement submissions must be received by Thursday at noon for publication on the following Monday. To submit your Monday Memo item, use the Submit Announcement (which can also be found at /about/mmemo/index.html) and choose "General Announcement" or "Notice" as the Announcement Type. You may also submit announcements by email to monday.memo@enmu.edu. Announcements can only be accepted from off-campus groups that are non-profit and the announcements should have some relevance to ENMU (such as seeking ENMU volunteers).

MONDAY MEMO DEADLINE The deadline for submissions to the Monday Memo is Thursday at noon prior to the Monday publication.

EARLY ADVISING DATES – The following are dates of Early Advising and Registration on campus and the areas of the students who are attending.
April 23 – Northern NM
April 26 – NM students

NEW POLICIES FOR CONSIDERATION – The following two draft policies will be submitted to the Board of Regents for their approval. The Dress Code affects Professional Staff, Support Staff and students working on campus. The Visitors Policy affects everyone on campus.

Please send comments to Dr. Steven Gamble by email (ENMU President or steven.gamble@enmu.edu) or by mail (station 1) no later than Friday, May 3, 2002.

Eastern New Mexico University Dress Code

It is Eastern New Mexico University's philosophy that the university's professional image begins with the appearance of our workforce. Individual departments may vary in their required dress expectations depending on job requirements. The department supervisor, in consultation with the executive administrator, will be responsible for conveying appropriate standards for dress for employees, including students. The area executive administrator is the ultimate authority on appropriate dress standards if a disagreement occurs. A few examples of inappropriate attire are cut-offs, tank tops, halter-tops, jogging suits, revealing attire, torn clothing, and the like.

Questions or complaints that cannot be handled to the employee's satisfaction by his or her supervisor/manager should be referred to the Human Relations/Affirmative Action Office for advice to resolve the situation.

Personal Visits to Campus by Children and Others

All supervisors have the responsibility to ensure that an effective work-place is maintained. Because extended visits in the workplace by children and other personal visitors distract employees and fellow workers from their official responsibilities and may put visiting children at risk, visits by friends, children, and other relatives at an employee's work site are to be limited to casual visits of short duration.

With the supervisor's permission, children may be present in the employee's office on days of K-12 unscheduled school closings, unavailability of sitters due to an emergency, and similar occasions. Such occurrences should be rare. Children must always be under visual and auditory supervision. Attendance in a classroom by individuals not enrolled in the class (including children) must be with the express approval of the instructor.

FINAL DARWINISM PRESENTATION SET – The seventh and final session of "Darwin and Darwinism Today," the 2002 Jack Williamson Colloquium on Science and Humanities, has been set. Randy Thornhill, Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of New Mexico, will speak on "The Evolutionary Psychology of Human Attractiveness and Attraction" at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 29, in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building. Dr. Thornhill is one of the world's leading scholars on evolutionary psychology, the application of evolutionary theory to human behavior, as well as one of its most active popularizers. He is the co-author of the controversial "A Natural History of Rape: Biological Bases of Sexual Coercion" (MIT Press, 2000).

Those attending are encouraged to read introductory materials on evolutionary psychology available on the Colloquium's web site: www.enmu.edu/jackwilliamson/colloquium/index7.html

CHEESEHEADS TO BRING MORE STAFF DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
We’d like to introduce ourselves. Even though we're not necessarily Green Bay Packer fans, as the group that brought you the "Who Moved My Cheese" workshop, we are scheduling more staff development opportunities.

We are members of a Staff Development Team formed at the request of Dr. Gamble in November 2001. Our goal is to provide training opportunities to better enable staff to assist students and the University community, and to become more effective and efficient in supporting the University mission.

Team members include: Daniel Alaniz, Mark Barela, Candace Baros, Ronnie Birdsong, Sheryl Borden, Ann-Marie Bucksath, Betsy Chavez, Elaine Ennis, Carol Fletcher, A Ramon Garcia, Nikki Howard, Betty King-Lowry, Donna Kittrell, Becky Lopez, Lisa Obenhaus, Jennifer Poyer, Oscar Robinson and Angel Salas.

The first training offered by the Staff Development Team was “Who Moved My Cheese” workshop. The results were quite positive, and workshop participants requested additional training opportunities. These areas include:

  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution/personalities
  • Customer service
  • Manager workshops
  • Motivating others
  • Organization skills
  • Procedures
  • Teamwork
  • Time management
  • Train the trainer

In the coming months, the Staff Development Team will work to develop training opportunities in these and other areas; and we appreciate your support as we move forward to accomplish these goals. We will soon have a website where you will have the opportunity to make requests or comment on any Staff Development activities. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome, so please feel free to e-mail any member of the Staff Development Team at any time.

2002 Eastern New Mexico University Biomedical Science Seminars
Wednesday, April 24, 2002
Becky Sharp Auditorium

6 – 6:30 p.m.: Substrate specificity of homologous bacterial sugar transporters. Dr. Manuel Varela

6:30 – 7 p.m.: Investigating the physiology of learning and memory using Drosophila mutants. Dr. Nick Wright

7 – 7:30 p.m.: Isolation, purification and characterization of the thiosulfate oxidizing system of
T. neapolitanus. Dr. Newton Hilliard

7:30 – 8 p.m.: Solubilization and partial characterization of a progesterone binding protein in the plasma membrane of Xenopus laevis oocytes. Dr. Zhiming Liu

8 – 8:40 pm: Recent progress in the physiology of ovarian follicle maturation and ovulation in fishes. Dr. Reynaldo Patino

Dr. Manuel Varela is an assistant professor of biology at ENMU. His research is focused on two fundamental areas of microbiology. The first deals with the molecular microbial physiology of sugar transport in bacteria. Here they are interested in learning the molecular mechanism by which various sugar transporters select their substrate. The second area involves the molecular biology of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Here they are interested in examining the nature of multiple antibiotic resistance in potentially pathogenic bacteria in the clinical setting and environment.

Dr. Nick Wright is an assistant professor of biology at ENMU. His research involves both "in vitro" and "in vivo" recording from identified Drosophila central neurons involved in the processes of olfactory learning and memory. These processes can then be "dissected" by the use of mutants who's altered learning and memory can often be traced to a single, dysfunctional protein.

Dr. Newton Hilliard is an assistant professor of physical sciences at ENMU. His research focuses on elucidating the electron transfer and energy conservation pathways in chemolithotrophic bacteria. Currently, the obligately autotrophic sulfur oxidizing bacteria, Thiobacillus neapolitanus, is used as a model system.

Dr. Zhiming Liu is an assistant professor of biology at ENMU. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of oocyte maturation, ovulation, and fertilization in animals. His research is supported by grants from NIH, WAESO, and ENMU and results have been published in prestigious journals including Endocrinology, Molecular Endocrinology, Biology of Reproduction, and Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences USA.

Dr. Reynaldo Patino is a professor and assistant leader of Texas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Texas Tech University. He has served as President of the Physiology Section of the American Fisheries Society, Editorial Board member and Associate Editor of five top-ranked international journals (Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, General and Comparative Endocrinology, Biology of Reproduction, and Journal of the World Aquaculture Society). He is also a peer-review panel member for NIH, NSF, USDA, NOAA and other funding agencies. His research has been focused on the hormonal and cellular control of ovarian maturation and ovulation in fishes and amphibians. He has received many research awards and grants and his laboratory is known internationally.

(Sponsored by New Mexico Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network Distinguished Lecturer Program, Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, ENMU Chapter, and Biol 592 Graduate Seminar. The seminars are free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact Dr. Zhiming Liu at 505.562.2495 or email: zhiming.liu@enmu.edu).

A WALK TO CURE CYSTIC FIBROSIS – WE NEED YOUR HELP! for the "GREAT STRIDES" charity event; "A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis."

The national society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has contacted me (Nicholas Wright) to organize a local fund raising event- the "Great Strides walk for cystic fibrosis". Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, which affects approximately 30,000 children and adults in the US. A defective gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus. This results in the lungs, in particular, being unable to clean themselves properly and therefore making the sufferer susceptible to life-threatening infections. Currently there is no cure! We need your help to raise money to fund research to find a cure for this debilitating condition.

This is a non-competitive walk/gentle "stroll" of around 10K/6mi. starting at the Greyhound Arena car park on N. Ave."O" at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27. We will walk about three miles out of town to the junction of "RSV 6" and "RSV U" and back. The idea is that you pick up a sponsorship pamphlet from either the biology department office in Roosevelt Hall, (Room 111), or the Students Union Help Desk. Then using any means at your disposal, (this can include blackmail, extortion, etc!), obtain sponsors for your walk and collect the monies in advance. On the day of the walk you should arrive between 8 and 9 a.m. in advance to register and hand over your sponsorship money. Then we walk! Water will be available at the halfway point but, as this is a gentle walk, you can bring your own if you wish! Kids are welcome but only if accompanied – and they cannot be "walkers"/sponsors in their own right, only adults please! The same applies to WELL-BEHAVED pets! (on leads please--there may be traffic!). If you can collect $75 then you will be entitled to a free Cystic Fibrosis Foundation T-shirt; larger amounts can gain even better prizes! We hope to have a City Official start us off at 9a.m.! So please join us on the 27th.

More details can be obtained from me, Nick Wright, at: Office phone--562.2543; Home phone, (leave message)--356.2363; Email: nicholas.wright@enmu.edu.
