ENMU Student Has Taped Nationally-Syndicated 'Powerball' Game Show
(won't reveal how much he won)
by Shane Brown
Communication Services
(with additional information from Lance Ross, New Mexico Lottery)
An
Eastern New Mexico University computer science major has found two ways
to benefit from the New Mexico Lottery.
Joshua Jowers not only receives a Lottery Success Scholarship for his
undergraduate tuition, but has been picked to represent New Mexico on
the nationally-syndicated lottery television game show, Powerball
Instant Millionaire.
Josh, 22, has returned to Portales from a game-show taping in Las Vegas,
Nev., where host Todd Newton noted that Jowers attends ENMU with a scholarship
provided by New Mexico Lottery players. [more]

During New Mexico Lottery 'Pick 3' Drawing
(New Mexico Lottery benefits students at Portales, Roswell and Ruidoso
campuses)
The New Mexico Lottery featured
Eastern New Mexico University in its "Pick 3"
drawing on Tuesday night, Dec. 10, on CBS stations in the state.
Not only did the person announcing the drawing wear this ENMU sweatshirt,
but bragged about how successful Eastern's broadcasting graduates are
in the state and nationwide.
Since the spot was taped off of TV on a home VCR, the recording is not
of the highest quality. Nevertheless, as always, the Monday Memo
thanks Ellen Gardiner and her staff at the Faculty Resource Center
for digitizing the spot for the Monday Memo.

ENMU-Ruidoso Director Hands Daughter Diploma During Saturday Morning
Graduation
(ENMU professor gives keynote; 18% of graduates are from ENMU-Roswell
and ENMU-Ruidoso)
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
Among the 228 students that graduated Saturday morning from Eastern
New Mexico University was Shannon A. Miller, daughter of Dr. Jim Miller,
director of ENMU-Ruidoso. Dr. Miller handed his daughter her diploma
as she walked across the stage in Greyhound Arena on the Portales campus.
Shannon earned an associate's degree at Ruidoso, then transferred to
Portales for her bachelor's degree.
Of the graduates, 21 were from ENMU-Roswell and 21 were from ENMU-Ruidoso.
According to Dr. Miller, the graduates from the branch campuses either
received their associate degrees from Roswell and Ruidoso and transferred
to Portales to finish their bachelor's degrees, or earned bachelor's
degrees through Instructional TV courses on the Roswell and Ruidoso
campuses.
"I think that is showing a good trend for Eastern," Board
of Regents president Blaine Hess said of the 18 percent that the branches
contributed to the 228 total.
Dr. John Humphreys, assistant professof management, began a new tradition
of professors giving the fall commencement address with a humorous and
challenging talk.
Dr. Humphreys told the graduates that he envied their stage of life
because their canvases do not yet contain too much paint, giving them
the opportunity and power to paint their canvases into whatever they
wish.

New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson has reappointed former ENMU pre sident
Everett Frost to his third term as one of New Mexico's three commissioners
to the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education. Dr. Frost
is not only a past Chair of WICHE, but also the most senior member in
years of experience of all 45 commissioners.
Governor-Elect Bill Richardson has appointed Dr. Frost
to the transition task force for Higher Education and the Commission
on Higher Education.
McGraw-Hill Press and Editoria Cultrix, publishers in Sao Paulo, Brazil,
have reprinted the cultural anthropology textbook that Dr. Frost authored
several years ago with the now deceased E. Adamson Hoebel, Regents Professor
of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota. This reprint is in Portuguese,
one of the few anthropology texts available in Portuguese. [more]
Interim Housing Director Gets Permanent
Nod
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
Stephanie McClary has been named director of Housing, effective Jan.
1, 2003, at Eastern New Mexico University, according to Dr. Gary Musgrave,
vice president for Student Affairs. Stephanie had been serving as interim
director since December of 2001.
"Stephanie has done an excellent job of leading our Resident Life
Program after the resignation of Steve Dixon, who took the position
of director of Learning Communities at Eastern," said Dr. Musgrave.
"Stephanie gives a great deal to ENMU to support the success of
students who live on campus."
Stephanie said that after 12 years of working in the Housing and Residence
Life Department, she has developed a good foundation needed for the
transition to the position of director.
"I look forward to serving the on-campus students by making their
living experience at ENMU comfortable and rewarding. I am blessed to
have a talented and competent staff of students and full-time employees
to work with. What an honor it is to be chosen for this vital role.
Stephanie said.
Stephanie graduated cum laude with a 1989 bachelors degree from
ENMU, with an accounting minor. From 1991-2001 she served as housing
coordinator.
Stephanie began her working career at Eastern in 1990-91 as Department/Division
Secretary for Campus Union and Housing.

Former CNN anchor and ENMU graduate Kysa Daniels will visit Eastern
New Mexico University on Thursday, Jan. 30, for a full day and evening
of activities.
Ms. Daniels will meet with students from regional high schools, with
ENMU students in several classes, tape a "Creative Living"

Kappa Sigma Wins 'Inter-Organizational
Blood Drive Challenge'
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
Kappa Sigma won the "Inter-organizational Blood Drive Challenge."
They were recognized and presented a trophy on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in
the Campus Union Lobby.
This community outreach program was a new initiative on the part of
ENMU's Student Activities
and ASAB.
According to Will Kayatin, director of Student Activities and Organizations,
"The blood drive was a huge success, and the Kappa Sigmas
really stepped up to the plate by donating more blood than any other
organization on campus."
Organizations that participated included Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon, Chi Omega, the Band, Alpha Phi Omega and ASAB. Will estimates
that the groups donated well over 125 units, with Kappa Sigma contributing
over 40 units.

ENMU Track Expected to Be Ready for Public
Use by Late Spring
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
Eastern's track is currently being refurbished for the new track team,
which will make its debut this
spring.

According to Mike Maguire, ENMU athletic director, although the track
will not be ready in time for the 2003 spring season, Portales High
School has graciously consented to letting the team use their facilities.
However, Mike says, it is anticipated that the track, which will be
converted from 440 yards to 400 meters, will be ready for the public
to resume using for walking and jogging by late spring. The Eurotan
SG Polyurethane Surface being installed requires consistently warm weather
to solidify. (To prevent damage, Mike does request that the public refrain
from using wheeled devices.)
According to Lewis Reeves, director of the Physical Plant, the track
will also include field event facilities, such as pole vaulting, high
jumping and long jumping runways and pits, as well as shot put and discus
areas. To prevent accidental spearings, the javelin-throwing area will
be located outside the oval.
Lewis says that the main contractor is Southwest Recreational of Albuquerque,
and the sub-contractor is Ramirez and Sons Paving of Clovis.

Apparently,
Only the Hair Has Changed Readers

fact, some claimed that everyone and their dog should know that
the eyes and smile would give away Sheryl Borden as last week's
Mystery Employee. Here, Sheryl, host
of the syndicated PBS program "Creative Living" and
marketing director at ENMU's KENW-TV, draws
the winner from the large pistachio jar (which has since suffered
a tragic accident) filled with the names of the 59 correct entrants.

it from approximately 1957 to 1962. David Moon, supervisor of

After the regents read a resolution praising Buck's service to
Eastern, the Office of Development presented him with one of the
famous ENMU black chairs. Flanking Buck are Blaine Hess, president
of the Board of Regents, and Dr. Steven G. Gamble, ENMU president.
