The Eastern New Mexico University Department of Theatre
and Dance is staging The Miss Firecracker Contest on Feb.
14-16 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre Center on the Portales campus.
The play revolves around the subject of beauty-exterior and interior.
Author Beth Henly examines the characters individual search for
dignity. The play focuses on individual interpretations of beauty-stressing
that beauty also dwells below the skin.
The production requires an ensemble cast, meaning every actor plays
an equally important role, with no leading roles. With one exception,
all the actors are theatre majors. The cast consist of six students:
Ruth Alicia Browne, Kristin K. Berg, Tanya Leigh Miller, Ryan J. Cook,
Ron Hensley and Sarah Wright.
The students have been very committed, said director Daryl
Ward Phillipy. They have done some very nice work on this.
Auditions for this production and other spring productions were held
at the beginning of the semester. They were open to the public but geared
more toward Eastern students. One of the reasons this production was
picked was because the roles are mainly female and, currently, the majority
of theatre majors are female.
Phillipy
is an assistant professor of theatre and dance at ENMU. He is in charge
of teaching most of the departments acting classes, from beginning
acting for non-majors to advanced acting. He has worked for Eastern
for 18 months, and this is his third play to direct. Phillipy describes
the play as being a Gothic fairy tale.
Tickets are on sale now through opening night at the theatre box office,
open from noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tickets are $4 for
students with a valid ID, $5 for pre-college students, $6 for senior
citizens and $7 for everyone else.
