EXEMPTION FROM INCOME
TAX WITHHOLDING--Generally, an employee may claim exemption
from income tax withholding if he or she had no income tax liability
in the previous tax year and expects none in the current tax year. To
claim the exemption, an Exempt W-4 Form must be filed. A W-4 Form claiming
exemption from withholding is valid for one year and must be re-filed
for subsequent years. Employees who claimed the exemption from withholding
on their 2001 W-4 Forms must file new W-4 Forms in the Payroll Office
by March 4 to avoid a break in their exempt status for 2002. Because
most employees who qualify for this exemption are students, supervisors
are being asked to inform student employees of this regulation.
LITERARY MAGAZINE ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS--El
Portal Literary and Art magazine is now accepting submissions for the
spring publication. Writing submissions must be submitted in hard copy
and on disk formatted for Microsoft word. Art submissions in hard copy
only. We are looking for short stories, poems, essays, photos, artwork,
etc. Whatever best expresses your creativity. There will be cash prizes
for top selections. Mail submissions to Station #25, c/o El Portal.
CABARET PERFORMANCES SET--The original
version of the smash Broadway hit "Cabaret" will be playing
in the Ballroom from Feb. 28 through March 3, with a Sunday afternoon
matinee. Dr. Jean Ornellas, director and professor of voice, has chosen
to present the less risqué original version of the play, which
is quite different from the revival currently playing on Broadway. The
revival shifted much of the focus from the impact of politics on the
lives of the characters, and centered more on the sex life of mid-war
Berlin. According to Dr. Ornellas, "The original really depicts
how the insidious rise of Nazism affected the characters' lives. The
play emphasizes the way people tried to play and party and ignore what
was happening around them. There are a lot of fun dance numbers, but
it's rather disturbing at the same time." All performances will
be held in the Ballroom, set up to resemble a Berlin Nightclub. Evening
performances begin at 7 p.m., and the Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m.
Tickets are available in the Music Building, Room 110. Prices are $7
for adults, $6 for senior citizens, $5 for students, and $4 for students
with an ENMU ID. In keeping with the nightclub atmosphere, dessert and
coffee or sparkling cider will be available at intermission. Tickets
for intermission dessert are $2.50, and advance reservations are requested.
For additional information or ticket reservations, please call ext.
2787.

will be Dr. Marv Lutnesky, associate professor and chair of the Department
of Biology. It will be a brown bag session, so people can bring their
lunch from the cafeteria. The session will address the questions: How
does evolution work? What is the evidence for it? How has Darwin's original
theory been confirmed or modified? What questions are evolutionary biologists
asking today? The reading for this session is Chris Colby's "Introduction
to Evolutionary Biology" . There's a link to it on the colloquium's
