WARNING
The attempt at "clever" headers below is an effort to accommodate
those who say they enjoy them and found the previous Monday Memo style
a bit dry. For those pressed for time and who get frustrated by non-informative
headers, it might be best to go straight to the first line of the announcement.
CLARENCE DARROW WOULD
HAVE FELT RIGHT AT HOME AT UPCOMING 'CHARLES DARWIN' PRESENTATION
Dr. Jonathan Smith, holder of ENMU's Jack Williamson Visiting Endowed
Chair in Science and the Humanities, will make a presentation on "Charles
Darwin, Natural Selection, and Victorian Culture" at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building. It will be
part of an ongoing colloquium on "Darwin and Darwinism Today: Contexts
and Controversies" that Dr. Smith hopes will "facilitate discussion
and reflection by students, faculty, and the broader community on the
interactions of science and the humanities and their importance in enhancing
American culture and society." Dr. Smith says that, "No scientific
theory has had a wider impact on our understanding of what it means
to be human, in both a literal and figurative sense, than Darwinian
evolution, and none has generated more controversy in everyday American
life. It thus seems a natural selection (if you'll forgive the pun)
for the colloquium, a topic I hope will spark the kind of engaged, thoughtful
discussion that Jack (Williamson) envisioned."

GONNA BE ANOTHER BANNER
YEAR FOR USERS
To All Banner Users--Important Banner Release 5.X Update: The Banner
system will be taken "off line" at 5 p.m. on Feb. 15; the
upgrade process will begin at that time; the Banner system will return
to on-line production on Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. All University offices that
use Banner will need to develop appropriate plans for "off-line"
operation on Feb. 18-19. Offices are also encouraged to develop contingency
plans to address the unforeseen possibility of being "off line"
for a couple of additional days (Feb 20 - 22). It is highly unlikely
that the additional time will be needed, however, because there is no
way to "pre-test" a "one time" event such as the
Banner upgrade/go-live, it is prudent to anticipate and prepare for
the unexpected.
The configuration of Banner Rel. 3.X and production
data will be "frozen" at 5 p.m. Feb. 15th-- in a worst-case
scenario it will be possible to "back-out" and bring the Rel.
3.X machine back online into production--any decision to abort the Rel.
3.X to 5.X conversion would be achieved through consultation with all
three campuses. In preparation for this upgrade, all Banner users should
be actively working with Rel. 5.X screen and capabilities at their local
workstations; users should print, and become familiar with, the appropriate
sections of the Rel. 5.X documentation (located on the Banner server
at \\AD02\adadmban\bdoc5x).
Team leaders for each of the functional teams
(on each campus) will provide further communication on Banner activities
- they will also be checking with Banner users for their areas relative
to training and testing. Problems encountered by users during testing
must be documented (provide details such as: form names, what was attempted;
error messages, etc.). This information should be sent to both the team
leader for the respective system and to csd.systems@enmu.edu. Unless
users document problems and notify the team leader and the Banner systems
support group, problems will not be solved. Additional information about
the Banner upgrade will be provided in the coming weeks.
THANK YOU TO FUTURE
SMALL SCREEN STARS
The Office of Communication Services thanks all the students who participated
in our recent shoot for a new TV spot to promote ENMU. Also, thank you
to the faculty and staff who helped us round up students. The talent
level in the spot should far surpass that of most sitcoms.
