Portales Sets Martin Luther King Jr. Activities

The City of Portales is hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday, Jan. 21. The patriotic theme is “A Day On, Not a Day Off.”

Activities begin with a 10 a.m. parade down 18th Street to Abilene, around the junior high building, then to the Memorial Building. Beginning at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Building Portales mayor Don Davis will read a proclamation, followed by the presentation of the float contest winners by county commissioner Dennis Lopez. Presentation of the art contest winners will be by Cecil Lynn, chairman of the New Mexico Martin Luther King Jr. Commission.

ENMU football coach Bud Elliott will be the master of ceremonies for the holiday program, which will begin with an an invocation by Rev. Frank Smith of the Spanish Baptist Church, selections by the Portales High School Choir, Jennifer Poyer singing “America the Beautiful,” and an inspirational speech by Debby Parker.

Following a brief intermission, there will be a “press conference” from the past, with narrator Oscar Robinson. Historical participants will include President John F. Kennedy (Don Elder), Sen. Hubert Humphrey (Don Criss), Cesar Chavez (Candido Tafoya), Thurgood Marshall (Judge Fred Arnold) Eleanor Roosevelt (Patrice Caldwell), Dolores Huerta (Julia Rosa Lopez-Emslie), Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Damon Charlee), and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune (Anne Scott).

Following the “press conference,” there will be recognition of Roosevelt County American
Legion and VFW reps by Commander Joe Blair, presentation of certificates to new citizens, presentation of youth opportunity trainees by mayor Pro Tem Dianne Y. Parker, musical selections by Catherine Chavez and the ENMU Choir, and the benediction by Rev. Frank Smith.
