MONDAY MEMO DEADLINE The deadline for submissions to the Monday Memo is noon on the Thursday prior to the Monday publication. Submissions may be sent via e-mail to monday.memo@enmu.edu. On-line e-mail forms may also be used from the Monday Memo web address at /about/mmemo/index.html.

ANNOUNCEMENTS SHOULD HAVE ENMU CONNECTION –
Announcements submitted to the Monday Memo should have an ENMU connection, and can only be run for off-campus groups that are nonprofit.

AUTHORIZED ABSENCES CAN BE SUBMITTED ON-LINE – Those submitting Authorized Absence forms are encouraged to submit them on-line by clicking onto the form at the electronic Monday Memo site. The forms will be sent electronically to Student Affairs, then, upon approval, forwarded to the Monday Memo.

2002 PRESIDENT'S "SPIRIT OF EASTERN" AWARDS and CHESTER HAUGHAWAUT EXEMPLARY HUMAN RELATIONS AWARD – CALL FOR NOMINATIONS–Nominations are being sought from any employee or student for the 2002 President's Spirit of Eastern Awards and the Chester Haughawaut Exemplary Human Relations Award. The awards are to identify faculty, professional and support staff members whose contributions to ENMU are superior. The deadline date for submitting nominations is March 26. Nomination forms listing the selection criteria may be obtained from the President's Office, the Administration Building Information Center, Roswell Administrative Offices, the Ruidoso Instruction Center Office, or any Spirit of Eastern Awards committee member. DARWINISM COLLOQUIUM CONTINUES ON MARCH 28 – The Williamson Colloquium on Darwin and Darwinism Today continues with "Darwinism and Religion" on Thursday, March 28, at 8 p.m. in Buchanan Hall. The presenter is Doug Mills, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Religion. Questions include: How has the relationship between Darwinism and Christianity been viewed historically? How is that relationship viewed today? Where does the relationship between Darwinism and Christianity fit in the broader issue of the relationship between Christianity and science? Is "Intelligent Design" theory a viable alternative to Darwinian natural selection? Readings for this session are available on the Colloquium web site at www.enmu.edu/jackwilliamson/colloquium

STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE SET FOR APRIL 1 – Reminder: The deadline for the student research conference is Monday, April 1. Abstracts should be delivered to Professor Anthony Schroeder, COB 177, or campus mail at Station 3. The abstract may also be submitted as an attachment to email. The email address is A.Schroeder@enmu.edu. The abstracts should be one page long and provide the following information:

Name and address for the student, telephone number and email address.
Name of the advisor.
Category for the entry.
Abstract (purpose, methodology, finds).
Type of presentation equipment needed.

Winners receive cash awards ($150) for the best Graduate and Undergraduate research presentation in Business, Communication, English, Hispanic Studies, Humanities, Math/Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The presentation is Tuesday, April 16 from 1-3 p.m. in designated rooms in the College of Business. A banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. for the recognition of the winners. The speaker for the banquet will be President Steven Gamble.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS AND DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS CEREMONY SET – On Tuesday, April 16, classes will be dismissed from 3:30-5 p.m. so that students and faculty may attend the Spring Endowed Scholarship and Department Awards Program. Early afternoon and evening classes will meet as usual. The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Endowed scholarships and department honors will be presented. Graduation honors will be presented at the Honors Convocation to be held Friday, May 10.

ENMU VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR TRASH-BASH – In April, the city of Portales, the Chamber of Commerce and the Pride-In-Portales committee will hold the annual city-wide trash-bash to rid the community of unsightly trash and litter. We have been doing this for over 15 years. Although it is a city-wide thing, over 75 percent of the yearly participants are our college students, organizations and individuals. Last year we had over 200 participants. To participate, call Pat Rucker at ext. 2092.

ENMU VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR ASIAN MONTH – The Cultural Observance Committee at Cannon Air Force Base is looking for ENMU individuals who want to participate in establishing activities for May's "Asian Pacific Heritage Month Observance." This year's theme is "Unity in Freedom". We need volunteers to help organize a potluck and a fashion show with traditional dance. We welcome anyone who wants to help put on these events. If you are interested in sharing your culinary skills by contributing food for a potluck, or you would like to model or contribute clothing for a fashion show, please contact Lt. ENMU-ROSWELL SCHEDULES SPRING BREAK – Students and faculty at ENMU-Roswell will take some time off from classes the last week of March. Spring Break will run from Sunday, March 24 through Sunday, March 31. All main campus offices, including the bookstore, student computer lab, and the library, will remain open, however, from Monday, March 25 through Friday March 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. GED testing, LaserGrade testing and computer-based testing will not be conducted during this week. Placement tests will be conducted during Spring Break week (March 25-29) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The campus will be closed March 30-31. Classes will resume Monday, April 1. COMMUNITY ADVISORY COUNCIL TO MEET – The Community Advisory Council of ENMU-Roswell will meet Thursday, April 11 at 4 p.m. in the Campus Union Building Multipurpose Room. ASSESSMENT DAY SET FOR APRIL 3 – Faculty will meet in the CUB Ballroom for breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by brief remarks from the Assessment Resource Office and the Assessment Committee. Department meetings will begin no later than 9:30 a.m. Departments will be expected to remain in the CUB Ballroom for their meetings. The Assessment Resource Office and Assessment Committee members will be available for consultation.

TRAVEL/STUDY OPPORTUNITY TO GHANA – How would you like to have the opportunity to undertake first-hand study of the history and culture of the West African culture of Ghana? Participants will have an extended village stay where they will study one or more aspects of the Ghanaian culture. The study group will explore markets, cultural centers, monuments of Ghana, etc. The study trip will be offered May 20-31. If interested, please contact Dr. Caryl Johnson at ext. 2516.

ENMU EMPLOYEES INVITED TO BUY ROSES – The 14th Annual Rose-Day Sale sponsored by the Curry County, Cannon AFB, and Roosevelt County Red Cross has long-stemmed red roses for sale for $20.00 per dozen delivered and $15.00 per dozen if you pick them up. TEAMBUILDERS LOOKING FOR ENMU VOLUNTEERS – TeamBuilders Counseling Services is looking for ENMU students to serve as Behavior Management Specialists and Respite providers. PROPOSAL FORMS FOR RESEARCH GRANTS AVAILABLE – Proposal forms and criteria for research grants for faculty are available in Quay Hall, Room 115. Grants are provided for tenure-track faculty with terminal degrees. Proposals are due in the Grant and Contract Management Office no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5. TWO $500 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNICATION MAJORS – New Mexico Press Women is offering two $500 scholarships for students majoring in journalism, writing, graphic design, communication, advertising, public relations, broadcasting or photography. AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT SERVICES SETS BANQUET – African-American Student Services at Eastern will hold a banquet called "A Celebration of Excellence in Black History" at 7 p.m. on March 28 in the Campus Union Building Ballroom. The banquet will feature keynote speaker Frank Jackson, a distinguished historian who will address the story of mankind and diversity. Dr. Paul Lockman, ENMU professor of sociology, will also be honored. A distinguished and respected figure in the African-American community, Lockman will present a student an award named after Lockman himself. The event will also honor students that excel in schoolwork and leadership. Awards to student athletes, student leaders and student scholars will be given out that night. LITERARY MAGAZINE ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS – El Portal Literary and Art magazine is now accepting submissions for the spring publication. Writing submissions must be submitted in hard copy and on disk formatted for Microsoft Word. Art submissions in hard copy only. We are looking for short stories, poems, essays, photos, artwork, etc. Whatever best expresses your creativity. There will be cash prizes for top selections. We Make Music for Preschoolers--for 3-4 year olds with Nancy Jones, Tuesdays, 5:00-5:50 p.m., beginning March 26, Music Building-214. The fee for this eight-week class is only $40.00 and a performance recital is scheduled in Buchanan Hall, May 14.

Introduction to Asian Religions (REL 268)--an online 2-hour credit workshop, April 1-28, taught by Dr. David Komito of Santa Fe Community College, which will introduce students to the fundamental principles of the three great religions indigenous to Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism.
