ENMU to Present One Flea Spare

Eastern New Mexico Universitys Department of Theatre and Dance
will perform One Flea Spare at 8 p.m. on Sept. 19-21 in the Studio
Theatre at the University Theatre Center. Tickets are $3 and can be
purchased at the door.
Directed by Daryl Phillipy, One Flea Spare is a powerful and beautifully
written account of the black plague in London during the year 1665,
according to the director. [more]
Fall Enrollment at ENMU-Portales
Shows Increase
President Steven Gamble reports that the fall 2002 headcount
enrollment at ENMU-Portales of 3,638 exceeds the fall 2001 enrollment
of 3,583. More importantly, for state formula funding purposes, the
University grew by over 1,050 semester credit hours, an increase of
approximately 75 full-time equivalence (FTE). This is a 2.5 percent
increase in semester credit hour generation.
Once the enrollment data has been analyzed, more information will follow.
President Gamble thanks all who worked hard to make this a successful
enrollment.

Nydam, with assistance from Trish McGuire, instructor of computer information
systems, and Dr. Gerry Huybregts, dean of the College of Business. Tracy
Simmons, editor of The Chase, provided the photo to the
right of Dr. Dale Davis speaking at the Memorial Service. Ellen Gardiner
of the Faculty Resource Center digitized the slide show for the Monday
Memo.

Memorial Scholarship to honor the late and well-respected instructor

ENMU Prof Publishes in Harvard

Dr. John Humphreys, assistant professor of management in the College
of Business at Eastern New Mexico University, recently had a fictional
case study published in the Harvard Business Review.
The article, "The Best of Intentions," focuses on discrimination
issues in the business world. The article is about a boss who has to
decide if she should put an employee in an environment in which he most
likely would not be successful because he's a minority. At article's
end, top experts talk about the situation. The publication, Harvard
Business Review, is targeted at senior executives. [more]

Ridenour (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) has been named Lone Star Conference
South Division Offensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in Easterns
27-20 victory over Western New Mexico University on Saturday, Sept.
7, at Greyhound Stadium.
Ridenour was involved in two touchdowns, including a 14-yard pass to
Taryll Boxton (Sr., RB, Albuquerque, NM/Del Norte HS) for the winning
touchdown with 1:13 remaining in the game. [more]

Eastern New Mexico University free safety Ty Touchstone,
a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas (Monterey HS), has been named Lone Star
Conference South Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts
in Easterns 27-20 victory over Western New Mexico University on
Saturday, Sept. 7, at Greyhound Stadium.
Touchstone led ENMU with 10 tackles (six solo, four assists), intercepted
two passes, forced a fumble, and provided two key plays in the closing

ENMU Setter Named Player of
Week

Eastern New Mexico University setter Margie Goble (Jr.,
San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS) has been named Lone Star Conference South
Division Hitter-of-the-Week for her efforts in five matches played between
Sept. 3 and Sept. 8, 2002. Goble helped ENMU earn a 4-1 record during
the week, as the Zias improved to 7-2 overall.
Goble achieved 217 assists in 19 games, an average of 11.4 assists per
game. She supplied 56 assists in a 3-2 loss to Western New Mexico University,
50 assists in a 3-1 win over New Mexico Highlands University, and 49
assists in a 3-1 win over Adams State College. [more]
ENMU Hitter Named Player of Week

Eastern New Mexico University outside hitter Christabell
Mariner (Sr., Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna High School) has been
named Lone Star Conference South Division Hitter-of-the-Week for her
efforts in five matches played between Sept. 3 and Sept. 8, 2002. Mariner
helped the Zias go 4-1 during the week, as ENMU improved to 7-2 on the
season.
Mariner averaged 4.0 kills, 3.3 digs and 1.3 blocks per game, helping
the Zias win a mid-week match at Wayland Baptist University, before
going 3-1 in the Torneo de Amigas (Tournament of Friends) at Greyhound
Arena, Sept. 6-7. ENMU tied for the tournament title with Western New
Mexico University. [more]

Dr. Manuel Varela, assistant professor of biology,
had two papers accepted by peer-review for presentation at the upcoming
SACNAS Symposium in Anaheim, Calif., in September 2002. The first paper,
co-authored by graduate student Stephanie Perez, is titled "Characterization
of Lactose Transport Activity in Klebsiella pneumoniae". The
second paper, co-authored by graduate student Jonathan Burgos, is titled
"Effects of Dairy Farm Age on the Antibiotic Resistance
of Escherichia coli to Veterinary and Clinical Antibiotics".
Dr. Caryl Johnson, assistant professor of family and consumer
sciences, presented a workshop at the American Association of Family
and Consumer Sciences Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, in June. Dr.
Johnson presented with Dr. Cheryl Farr, Dr. Alberta Hill, Dr. Mary Andrews
and Dr. Rita Wood, FCS professionals from around the nation. The title
of the workshop was "Defining the International Body of Knowledge
for FCS: Part One."
Dr. Caryl Johnson, assistant professor of family and consumer
sciences, presented a juried poster presentation titled "College
Students Learn to Become Knowledgeable Consumers of Dietary Fat".
Dr. Johnson presented at the International Household & Family Research
Conference which was held in Helsinki, Finland in July.
Dr. Darren Pollock, assistant professor of biology and Dr. Benjamin
Normark, Department of Entomology, University of Massachusetts, have
had a paper published in Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary
Research. The title of their paper is "The life cycle of
Micromalthus debilis LeConte (1878) (Coleoptera: Archostemata: Micromalthidae):
historical review and evolutionary perspective."
