Fall Enrollment Up – The 2002 fall enrollment at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales shows an increase over the previous year. This fall's enrollment of 3,638 exceeds the 2001 fall enrollment of 3,583 by 55 students. The University saw an even larger increase in semester credit hours. That increased by 1,055 hours, or the equivalent of 74 full-time students.

Cafeteria Prices for Faculty/Staff
– The faculty/staff prices for meals in the Campus Crossroads (cafeteria) are as follows: Breakfast – $2.99; Lunch – $3.49; Dinner – $4.99.

Announcing First Journeys (Freshman Writing Contest) – The Fall 2002 Freshman Writing Contest is open to all freshmen currently enrolled in ENG 100 or 102. Submit a 500-750 word composition in either of two categories, narrative/descriptive or analytical, by Nov. 1 to the Language and Literature office (JWLA 205). Winning writers will have their essays published in the inaugural issue of First Journeys: Journal of the Freshman Writing Contest, and be invited to read their work in November. Greeks Sought – The Office of Student Affairs would like to identify individuals on campus who are affiliated with either a nationally recognized social fraternity or sorority. Would you please reply to this request by listing the name of your fraternity or sorority and the university or college where you were initiated?

Also, if you know of other Greek-affiliated individuals who live in the Portales and Clovis area, would you please supply their names? Please e-mail or take your information to the attention of Dr. Gary Musgrave, station 6, SAS 194. Thank you for your assistance.

A Chance to Envelope Yourself in Kindness – ITS/Telephone Services is in need of small and large "intercampus" envelopes (the Monday Memo has tried to convince Bonnie that it's "intracampus," but it just didn't "Sink" in). If you have any extras you can spare, send them to Station 15. Thank you.

AAUP Sets Meeting for Sept. 26 – All are invited to attend our first AAUP meeting of the 2002-2003 academic year. On the agenda will be discussion of two statewide-conducted surveys by AAUP and assessment of the selection process of Board of Regents. We hope you can attend and consider joining AAUP. We will be meeting Thursday, Sept. 26 at 3:30 p.m. in JWLA 127. See you there.

VALIC Rep on Campus – Julie Canon, VALIC Financial Advisor, will be on campus to discuss NMARP options and voluntary 403b opportunities on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sloan Room (SAS 109) . Ms. Canon would like to meet with employees to review VALIC accounts and discuss market activity.

Career Fair Set for Oct. 9 – The Counseling and Career Services Office will host "Career Fair Fall 2002" on Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can obtain a list of companies planning to attend and sign up for interview times, starting on Oct. 2. For more information or to sign up for interviews, come by the Counseling and Career Services Office in SAS 214.

Don't Forget Parking Decals – There is one week left for student, faculty and staff to register their vehicles for free. Starting Monday, Sept 30, the University Police Department will begin to issue citations for failure to register your vehicle. There will be a fine of $15 for all citations.

ENMU and Intel Team Up for Teachers – Eastern and The Intel Teach to the Future program are offering computer classes this fall for teachers, counselors and administrators in public, private and charter schools in the area. The focus of the program is to integrate technology with curriculum standards to boost student success. Participants will receive for free $1,000 worth of resources, including two legal copies of Microsoft XP, Encarta and MS Publisher, and 20 quality standards-based lessons on CD for use in their schools.

The skills and concepts taught are applicable to users of Apple, Macintosh and Windows PCs. Five-day sessions begin soon, with several sessions available at different times and dates.

The goal of the Intel Teach to the Future Program is to train classroom educators how to promote project-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum so that students will increase their learning and achievement.

The training consists of 40 hours of hands-on instruction to be delivered via 10 curricular modules. Sessions can be arranged for an entire school or district at the school's facility as well.

Participants will build lessons to use in the classroom; a portfolio and standards-based unit plan incorporating multimedia presentations, publications, web pages and support materials for students and teachers.

Homecoming Parade Entrants Can Receive $$ – Student organizations wishing to participate in the Saturday, Oct. 19, ENMU Homecoming Parade must register by Monday, Oct. 7. Each organization interested in building a float and entering the parade may apply to receive $100 in assistance funds on a first-come, first-served basis. Receipts for expenses incurred by the floats receiving checks may be requested by the Alumni Affairs office if deemed necessary. Organizations can apply at the Alumni Affairs office located in the Administration Building beginning Monday, Sept. 30. Deadline to apply is Monday, Oct. 7. Organizations can pick up their checks in the Alumni Office in Room 201 beginning Oct. 14.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Abilene and Third, goes north to First Street, and west on First Street to the ENMU Campus. This year's theme is "Back in the Day: Homecoming Traditions."

Altrusa Organizing Gift Closet for Cancer Patients – Altrusa is organizing a gift closet for cancer patients. They have already made some made some great comfort pillows and stuffed them. They are now soliciting hats, scarves, front button shirts, etc., anything that
will help make things easier for breast cancer patients. If you have anything you'd like to donate, or know of someone who would, or knows of someone who needs Altrusa's services, contact co-chair Patti Dobson at 762.0787.

Friday, Sept. 27
2-8:30 p.m. – Rocket Club Launches, Demonstrations, Static Displays, Food and Music.
(The airshow received a waiver for rocket launches to an altitude of 30,000 feet, the highest waiver in the State. It is expected that there will be some large rockets launched by owners from outside of the local area.)
Friday – free rides to kids, Young Eagles (8-18), kids get to build rockets)
Saturday, Sept. 28
7-10:30 a.m. – Altrusa Pancake Breakfast at the National Guard Armory; 9 a.m. – Gates Open for the Day's Activities that include: Rocket Club Demonstrations, Static Displays, Bob Carlton/Silent Wings Airshow Aerobatic Flying Show, Confederate Air Force aircraft displays and flying. Homebuilt and General Aviation Aircraft Displays. Young Eagles - Free "first time" airplane rides to youngsters ages 8 to 18. Food, Displays and Fun! Admission - $3.00 for adults, Children 12 and under free.

Women's Cancer Support Group – Sister Strength, Women's Cancer Support Group, meets the First Thursday of the month at the First United Methodist Church, 14th and Sycamore streets in Clovis from 7-8:30 p.m. The support group is open to women dealing with their own cancer diagnosis or that of a loved one. (Group meets in Room #20; enter building on east side of the church.)

Senior Meal Program Needs Volunteers – The Community Services Center Senior Meal Site of Portales is in need of volunteers to distribute homebound meals. The home-delivered meals route is generally divided among three volunteers. Volunteers would assist in packaging and delivering meals. This would require two hours per day (10-noon) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and bad-weather days. These meals are distributed to the elderly, disabled, and homebound that in some cases eat only one meal a day. At this time, there are approximately 75-90 individuals that the meal site delivers to on a daily basis. Mileage is reimbursed at .25 per mile. The Community Services Center meal site is currently looking for on-campus organizations that might be willing to volunteer their effort. Webpage Directory Access – With the inauguration of the new website, units will now have control over the content, maintenance, and development of certain levels of their website. ENMU faculty or staff may request directory access for the unit that they are charged with updating. Send emailed requests to webmaster@enmu.edu with the words "Directory Access Request" in the subject line. When these requests are received, the Webmaster will contact the area executive administrator, who must approve all requests for directory access. Once approval is given, directory access will be set up and the staff member will receive an email confirmation, with a directory password. At that point, pages in that directory can be changed or added, so long as the changes comply with the web policies. Informational workshops will be offered about how to use webpage templates and comply with web policies.
