Lifehouse Coming to ENMU Sunday Night (Sept. 8) Small Band; Big Sound

The multi-platinum band Lifehouse will rock Eastern New Mexico University’s Greyhound Arena in Portales at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 per ENMU I.D. This includes I.D.s from ENMU’s Roswell and Ruidoso campuses also. [more]

ENMU Band 75 Deep and Growing

Big Band SoundEastern New Mexico University has more members in its band than it has had in 20 years. The band has 75 members now, 44 of them freshmen. Last year, there were 44 members.

The increase in size is due to high school recruiting and good communication with students, according to Director of Bands Dustin Seifert. He said that ENMU's academic reputation, beautiful campus, and band program attract many students to Portales. [more]

ENMU Grad Inducted into Education Hall of Fame

Mack MitchellEastern New Mexico University alumnus Mack Mitchell was the 2002 inductee into the New Mexico Education Hall of Fame. Mitchell was recently presented the award at the New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators and New Mexico State Department of Education’s 31st annual summer banquet held at the Sheraton Old Town Hotel in Albuquerque.

Mitchell says that he enjoyed the time he spent at Eastern while attaining a degree in education. He was a resident advisor for Chavez Hall for two years. “Being an RA really helped me with the future,” Mitchell said. “I had to deal with a few difficult situations, which prepared me for the business world.” He also enjoyed playing basketball for ENMU for two years. ENMU and Intel Team Up for Teachers

Eastern New Mexico University and The Intel Teach to the Future program are offering computer classes this fall for teachers, counselors and administrators in public, private and charter schools in the area. The focus of the program is to integrate technology with curriculum standards to boost student success.

Participants will receive for free $1,000 worth of resources, including two legal copies of Microsoft XP, Encarta and MS Publisher, and 20 quality standards-based lessons on CD for use in their schools. [more]

ENMU-Roswell Recognizes Employees

A number of ENMU-Roswell employees were the recipients of plaques, checks and certificates during the fall faculty and staff in-service meeting held Aug. 23 on campus. Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president, presented 2002 "Spirit of Eastern" awards to six ENMU-R employees.

The award program recognizes personnel whose performance exemplifies those qualities that make Eastern unique: teaching/learning, campus community spirit, hard work, care about the institution, whole student life commitment, and demonstrated track record in their position. [more]

ENMU-Roswell Joins Campaign to Purchase Mammography Van

City and county officials were joined on Aug. 23 by Democratic candidate for governor, Bill Richardson and local organizers, Steve Gonzales, Wilfred Brady, and ENMU-Roswell Division of Health chair Jane Batson for the kick-off of a fund raising campaign to establish a new women's health care program in Chaves County.

The program centers on the purchase of a mobile mammography van that will provide preventive health services for low income women. [more]

Don't Call Him Rocky RaccoonThis enterprising squirrel recently enrolled in a culinary course at ENMU-Roswell, but was caught skipping class on the day that squirrrel stew was taught. Here, the little critter saves his lunch money for lessons in his hobby of contortionism by sampling from a feeder while a hummingbird was away taking flying lessons at the aviation center.

Jack Autographs Books at Science Fiction ConventionOn Aug. 23-25, Jack Williamson, retired ENMU professor and world-renowned science fiction writer, attended Bubonicon 34, the science fiction convention held annually in Albuquerque. Also in attendance were a number of other science fiction writers plus hundreds of fans. Williamson, 94, who has previously been Guest of Honor at this convention, was a surprise guest this year and his appearance proved to be quite popular with the fans and other writers. The photos show: (1) Williamson on a panel discussing the history and future of Space Operas with Melinda Snodgrass and Walter Jon Williams; (2) a long line of fans waits to get Jack to sign their books – Jack was the most popular author at the autographing session; and (3) Jack signing next to Spider and Jeanne Robinson who were the next most popular writers at the signing. Williamson enjoyed the event very much, and looks forward to attending again in the future.

Personnel Briefs

Dr. Michael Shaughnessy and Bill Gaedke have had "An Interview with Sonia Nieto: About Multuculturalism" accepted for publication in the North American Journal of Psychology.

Dr. Michael Shaughnessy, Dr. Scott Johnson and Dr. Fida Mohammed (now at SUNY, Oneonta ) have had a paper published .

Dr. Manuel Varela, assistant professor of biology, presented a research paper at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, this summer. The paper, co-authored by graduate student Jonathan Burgos, was titled "Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Enteric Bacteria from Dairy Farm Topsoil." The paper drew significant interest, and a summary of the work was highlighted in the ASM conference press room.

The College of Business is very pleased to announce that Dr. John Humphreys, assistant professor of management, has had a business case published in the July issue of the Harvard Business Review. The Harvard Business Review has a long and distinguished record of publishing challenging scenarios, in the form of business cases, which are used internationally in academic and professional education. Dr. Humphreys adds to this prestigious collection with his case titled "The Best of Intentions," which addresses ethical dilemmas when dealing with issues of workplace diversity.
