Monday Memo Deadline – The deadline for submissions to the Monday Memo is noon on the Thursday prior to the Monday publication. Submissions may be sent via e-mail to monday.memo@enmu.edu. Star Party Set for Oct. 5 – The Department of Physics is having a "Star Party" at Oasis State Park at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. Astronomers Bill Anderson and Mick Hoffman will be on hand to show you the night sky. Special guests will be the Clovis Astronomy Club. There will be several telescopes available to show you some of the greatest astronomical sights. Admission to the park is $4 per car. Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies and enjoy the night sky!

Administrators' Evaluations – Evaluations of at-will administrators will take place in October. Packets will be mailed out on Oct. 4. Deadline for the return of evaluations is Oct. 18, and a return envelope is provided in your packet. Pre-Law Informational Meeting Set for Oct. 10 in Portales – Don't miss the Pre-Law Informational Meeting, Thursday, Oct. 10, where you can find out: what it takes to get into law school; how to pick a law school; what pre-law advising services are available at ENMU; and more. Law School Forum Set for Oct. 19 in Albuquerque
– The University of New Mexico Pre-Law Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta will sponsor a Law School Forum along with the Western Association of Prelaw Advisors. The event will be held on Saturday Oct.19 from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. at the South Gym of Johnson Center on the UNM Campus. You can obtain more information about this event by logging on to http://www.unm.edu/~prelaw/lawday.html.

Piano Recital Features Original Compositions – Pianist Dr. Mark Dal Porto, assistant professor of music at Eastern New Mexico University, will present a Faculty Recital showcasing four of his own original compositions at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building. Assisting him will be Chris Beaty, flute, Eileen MacNaughton, violin, and Dr. Jeanie Ornellas, soprano. The recital is free and open to the public.

Health Fair Offers Flu Shots – On Oct. 10-11 Student Health Services will hold a Health Fair in the CUB. We will be giving flu shots at a cost of $10 each. We will be in the foyer of the CUB from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.

Car Wash Is Free, But It's a Fundraiser? – The students of ENMU's public relations club will hold a free car wash on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the C&S parking lot. This is the main fundraiser of the semester to pay for the Public Relations Student Society of America conference in the spring. Remember, it's FREE!

Bosses Day Luncheon Set for Oct. 15 – AEOP invites you to bring your boss and celebrate Bosses' Day at the annual AEOP Bosses' Day Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Campus Union Ballroom. The meal will feature a Hawaiian Chicken Buffet. No reservations accepted after 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11. Burt's Bees' Become Bookstore Buzz
– There is a "special" new product in the Bookstore that some of you may have heard of before. It is BURT'S BEES products. There is everything from lotion to eye cream. Please come and see what we have to offer.

Eating Navajo Tacos Will Raise Money for Scholarships – Native-American Affairs and the Native-American Club will sell Navajo Tacos every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month to raise money for scholarships for Native American students and events. The dates are as followed: 9/18, 10/02/, 10/16, 11/6, 11/20, 12/4. Plates are $5. It also includes the drink. You can call Native-American Affairs at 562.2470 to place your order ahead of time.

Artist to Display at Library – From Friday, Oct. 4, through Thursday, Nov. 7, artist Cheryl Hicks will display her art in the foyer in the Golden Library at Eastern. Cheryl, who graduated with honors from Thurston High in Redford, MI, and again with honors from the University of Michigan, has been doing a wide variety of artwork for quite some time. Her mediums include pencil and ink, charcoal, airbrush and many others.

Input Needed for Strategic Planning Process (includes free refreshments)
– This fall ENMU begins a cycle of strategic planning for the university, and your input is desired. Strategic Planning is the process by which a university envisions its future and develops the strategies to achieve its goals. You will have the opportunity to discuss ENMU's strengths and weaknesses, and the opportunities and challenges that are before us. You are encouraged to attend one of the sessions, and all input is welcome. Please check the schedule below for a time convenient for you. Refreshments will be served.

Announcing First Journeys (Freshman Writing Contest)
– The Fall 2002 Freshman Writing Contest is open to all freshmen currently enrolled in ENG 100 or 102. Submit a 500- to 750-word composition in either of two categories: narrative/descriptive or analytical, by Nov. 1 to the Language and Literature office (JWLA 205). Winning writers will have their essays published in the inaugural issue of First Journeys: Journal of the Freshman Writing Contest, and be invited to read their work in November. If It's Greek to You, You Can Be of Service – The Office of Student Affairs would like to identify individuals on campus who are affiliated with either a nationally recognized social fraternity or sorority. A Chance to Envelope Yourself in Kindness

VALIC Rep on Campus – Julie Canon, VALIC Financial Advisor, will be on campus to discuss NMARP options and voluntary 403b opportunities on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sloan Room (SAS 109) . Ms. Canon would like to meet with employees to review VALIC accounts and discuss market activity.

Career Fair Set for Oct. 9 – The Counseling and Career Services Office will host "Career Fair Fall 2002" on Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can obtain a list of companies planning to attend and sign up for interview times, starting on Oct. 2. For more information or to sign up for interviews, come by the Counseling and Career Services Office in SAS 214.

Don't Forget Parking Decals – There are two weeks left for student, faculty and staff to register their vehicles for free. Starting Monday, Sept 30, the University Police Department will begin to issue citations for failure to register your vehicle. There will be a fine of $15 for all citations.

Homecoming Parade Entrants Can Receive $$ – Student organizations wishing to participate in the Saturday, Oct. 19, ENMU Homecoming Parade must register by Monday, Oct. 7. Each organization interested in building a float and entering the parade may apply to receive $100 in assistance funds on a first-come, first-served basis. Receipts for expenses incurred by the floats receiving checks may be requested by the Alumni Affairs office if deemed necessary. Organizations can apply at the Alumni Affairs office located in the Administration Building beginning Monday, Sept. 30. Deadline to apply is Monday, Oct. 7. Organizations can pick up their checks in the Alumni Office in Room 201 beginning Oct. 14.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Abilene and Third, goes north to First Street, and west on First Street to the ENMU Campus. This year's theme is "Back in the Day: Homecoming Traditions."

Registration and additional information are available by contacting Parade Chair Danica Silva in the Alumni Affairs office at 562.2125. The Alumni Affairs office is located in Room 201 of the Administration Building on the ENMU campus.

Miss Lillian's Cowboy Stew – Westminster Presbyterian Church will hosts its annual "Miss Lillian's Cowboy Stew" Thursday, Oct. 10 from 4-7:30 pm at the church, 3112 N. Thornton in Clovis. The menu includes Cowboy Stew, homemade rolls, and the church's famous dessert buffet. Tickets are $6 donation for adults, $3 donation for children ages 5-12, and under 5, no cost. Take-out orders are available. For tickets, call Pastor Frank Sherman at 762.6471, or Patti Dobson at 762.0787. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Altrusa Organizing Gift Closet for Cancer Patients – Altrusa is organizing a gift closet for cancer patients. They have already made some made some great comfort pillows and already stuffed them. They are now soliciting hats, scarves, front button shirts, etc. – anything that will help make things easier for breast cancer patients. If you have anything you'd like to donate, or know of someone who would, or knows of someone who needs Altrusa's services, contact co-chair Patti Dobson at 762.0787.

Women's Cancer Support Group – Sister Strength, Women's Cancer Support Group, meets the First Thursday of the month at the First United Methodist Church, 14th and Sycamore streets in Clovis from 7-8:30 p.m. The support group is open to women dealing with their own cancer diagnosis or that of a loved one. (Group meets in Room #20; enter building on east side of the church.)

Senior Meal Program Needs Volunteers – The Community Services Center Senior Meal Site of Portales is in need of volunteers to distribute homebound meals. The home-delivered meals route is generally divided among three volunteers. Volunteers would assist in packaging and delivering meals. This would require two hours per day (10-noon) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and bad-weather days. These meals are distributed to the elderly, disabled, and homebound that in some cases eat only one meal a day. At this time, there are approximately 75-90 individuals that the meal site delivers to on a daily basis. Mileage is reimbursed at .25 per mile. The Community Services Center meal site is currently looking for on-campus organizations that might be willing to volunteer their effort. MainStreet Looking for Part-Time Manager – Portales' Mainstreet Program is seeking a part-time manager to generate and maintain awareness of downtown revitalization, economic development, business recruitment and retention, and organize special events and volunteers. Webpage Directory Access – With the inauguration of the new website, units will now have control over the content, maintenance, and development of certain levels of their website. ENMU faculty or staff may request directory access for the unit that they are charged with updating. Send emailed requests to Webmaster@enmu.edu with the words "Directory Access Request" in the subject line. When these requests are received, the Webmaster will contact the area executive administrator, who must approve all requests for directory access. Once approval is given, directory access will be set up and the staff member will receive an email confirmation, with a directory password. At that point, pages in that directory can be changed or added, so long as the changes comply with the web policies. Informational workshops will be offered about how to use webpage templates and comply with web policies. Victim Advocacy – a 48-hour lecture course scheduled Tuesdays/Thursdays, 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Oct. 29-Nov. 16, COB-136. A textbook of approximately $30 can be ordered by calling Extended Learning by Oct. 22. The fee is $450.
Ristra Making – a two-evening class with Fred Chino. Monday, Oct. 14, 5:30-6:30 p.m., gather at 1005 S. Kilgore St, to "pick" and pay for your chilies. Allowing a 24-hour "cure," meet Tuesday, Oct. 15, 7-9 p.m., COB-138 for tying. Please bring clothes hanger, kite string, scissors and optional husks and/or raffia if desired. Registration is $16.00. Please register by Oct. 11.
How to Care for Your Computer/Virus Protection – with Mick Hoffman Thursday, Oct. 17, 6-8:30 p.m., UCC-107. The fee is $30.00. Please register by Oct. 14.
Album in a Day – with Creative Memories Consultant, Kyla Gray, Saturday, Oct. 19, 1-3 p.m., COB-137. The fee is $10 with a kit fee varying $30.00-40.00 payable to the instructor. Materials include optional theme-oriented photos.
Aqua Aerobics – Ten rotations with Kristi Jones, Natatorium, Tuesdays/Thursdays, 6-6:50 p.m., Sept 17-Nov 21. The fee is $8 per each two-day rotation.
Swimming – for four years and up with certified instructors Ben and Jared Zatorski with three, eight-day rotations Mondays-Thursdays, Sept. 23, Oct. 14 and Oct. 28, 4-4:50 p.m., Natatorium. Registration per rotation is $40 and includes a Red Cross certification card for the level passed. Enrollment is limited and parental consent required.
Four-Week Cross Stitch – Complete a Santa sack with Victoria Garrett, Cozy Cottage Cross Stitch Shoppe, 119 S. Main St., Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 8-29. Registration is $40 with a $28.65 kit fee payable to the instructor. Please register by Oct. 3.
Speedy Cross Stitch – a one-night class with Victoria Garrett, Cozy Cottage Cross Stitch Shoppe, 119 S. Main St., Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 1. Registration is $7 with a $5 kit fee payable to the instructor.
Yoga – with Lisa Moyer, Saturdays, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Sept. 7-Dec. 7 (no class Thanksgiving weekend), GA-11. The cost is $5 per session. Ages beginning five years are welcome if accompanied by their parent. Remember to wear comfortable clothing. A mat, strap and blanket are optional.

Militant Islam and the United States – PHIL-268/HIST-468 - this one-credit hour workshop presented by Dr. Donald C. Elder, III and Dr. Gerald Gies will also include the ITV sites of Clovis, Hobbs, Roswell and Ruidoso. Class will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. with a one-hour on your own lunch and Saturdays, Oct. 12 and 19, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., JWLA-201. Tuition is $95.50. Please register by Oct. 4.
Introduction to Asian Religions – REL-268 - this three-credit hour online workshop (CRN 12465) is offered by author/editor, Dr. David Komito, Santa Fe Community College, Oct. 21-Dec. 13, who will introduce students to the fundamental principles of the three great religions indigenous to Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. Please contact Extended Learning for information on textbooks, website and registering. Tuition is $286.50.
See the Sound-Visual Phonics – CDIS/SPED-468/569 - a one-credit hour workshop presented by Dwayne Wilkerson, M.S., CCC-SLP, on the VP system originally developed to assist deaf children but has been successfully used in reading and literacy programs, speech-language therapy and ESL programs for both children and adults. Class will be held Friday, Nov. 15, 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in COB 117. Tuition is $95.50. Please register before Nov. 15.
