You may also submit announcements by e-mail to monday.memo@enmu.edu. Announcements can only be accepted from off–campus groups that are non–profit and the announcements should have some relevance to ENMU (such as seeking ENMU volunteers).

ENMU and Intel Team Up for Teachers – Eastern and The Intel Teach to the Future program are offering computer classes this fall for teachers, counselors and administrators in public, private and charter schools in the area. The focus of the program is to integrate technology with curriculum standards to boost student success. Participants will receive for free $1,000 worth of resources, including two legal copies of Microsoft XP, Encarta and MS Publisher, and 20 quality standards-based lessons on CD for use in their schools.

The skills and concepts taught are applicable to users of Apple, Macintosh and Windows PCs. Five-day sessions begin soon, with several sessions available at different times and dates. The goal of the Intel Teach to the Future Program is to train classroom educators how to promote project-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum so that students will increase their learning and achievement.

The training consists of 40 hours of hands-on instruction to be delivered via 10 curricular modules. Sessions can be arranged for an entire school or district at the school's facility as well. Participants will build lessons to use in the classroom; a portfolio and standards-based unit plan incorporating multimedia presentations, publications, web pages and support materials for students and teachers.

Mexican Independence Day to be Celebrated – Eastern New Mexico University's Office of Hispanic Affairs is planning a special celebration for Mexican Independence Day on Sept.16. The celebration will be held from 5-7 p.m. on the Dallan Sanders Memorial Plaza behind the Campus Union Building. This year's festivities will feature a Mariachi band, S.O.Y. (Save Our Youth) from Roswell, guest speakers, a piñata filled with goodies, and a buffet. Everything is free except for the optional buffet. The public is invited. For more information, contact ENMU's Hispanic Affairs at 505.562.2451.

According to Nancy Varelas, student director of Hispanic Affairs, Mexico's independence was not accomplished on that day in history. It is celebrated on Sept. 16 because that is when Father Miguel Hidalgo first gave the cry for independence. Traditionally every Sept. 15 at 11:59 p.m. Mexicans get together around every plaza or government building to give the cry of Hidalgo, "Viva Mexico!"

The fight to gain independence from Spain lasted for 10 years. In Mexico this festival is very important and everything is decorated in red, green and white, the colors of the Mexican flag. The celebration for independence is also traditionally followed by a parade with all of the schools marching side by side with policemen, military and anyone else who wants to join in on the festivities.

Last year, ENMU cancelled the festivities to honor the victims of Sept. 11.

Senior Meal Program Needs Volunteers
– The Community Services Center Senior Meal Site of Portales is in need of volunteers to distribute homebound meals. The home-delivered meals route is generally divided among three volunteers. Volunteers would assist in packaging and delivering meals. This would require two hours per day (10-noon) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and bad-weather days. These meals are distributed to the elderly, disabled, and homebound that in some cases eat only one meal a day. At this time, there are approximately 75-90 individuals that the meal site delivers to on a daily basis. Mileage is reimbursed at .25 per mile.

The Community Services Center meal site is currently looking for on-campus organizations that might be willing to volunteer their effort. For more information, or to volunteer effort, please contact Paul Klein, meal site director, at 356.8576, or Vonnie Banther at 356.8576 ext. 23. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated!

Web Page Directory Access – With the inauguration of the new Website, units will now have control over the content, maintenance, and development of certain levels of their Website. ENMU faculty or staff may request directory access for the unit that they are charged with updating. Send e-mailed requests to webmaster@enmu.edu with the words "Directory Access Request" in the subject line. When these requests are received, the webmaster will contact the area executive administrator, who must approve all requests for directory access. Once approval is given, directory access will be set up and the staff member will receive an e-mail confirmation, with a directory password. At that point, pages in that directory can be changed or added, so long as the changes comply with the Web policies.
