Leadership Recognition Awards Packets Available – Application packets for the Leadership Recognition Awards, 2002-03, have been available in departmental offices across campus and in 108 of the Campus Union and at the Campus Union Information Desk. Deadline for submission is Monday, April 21. Components include Student Organization Awards, Student Leader of the Year and Faculty/Staff Advisor of the Year. Please feel free to pick-up a packet and submit nominations.

Auction Still Cancelled The University Auction Sale scheduled for Aug. 2 has been cancelled. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Inventory Control @ 2606.

Come Clean About the Boxes – If any departments that were involved in the campus move to and/or from the Administration Building, SAS, Quay, or the Campus Union, have any of the moving boxes that were provided, Inventory needs to pick them up for use by other departments. Navajo Taco Sale on April 14 – The Office of Native American Affairs will have a Navajo Taco Sale on April 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SAS Coffee Lounge. Navajo Tacos w/drink are $5; Frito Pies w/drink are $3; and Frybread are $1. Please come out and support our office, as well as attend our Native American Awareness Week Activities. Thank You!

New Mexico Fellowship Program Seeking Applicants
– The New Mexico Fellowship Program is seeking undergraduates and graduates to work in state agencies this summer. Work will be in Santa Fe/ Albuquerque or other area or local area if approved. Seeking students from a variety of academic areas. Government, Business, Journalism/Communications, Computer Science, Biology, Environmental Science, Law, Pre-Med, to name a few. Thesis Defense – Ben Aubuchon will present his thesis, "There and Back Again: A GIS Least-Cost Path Analysis of Chaco Roads, Prehistoric Travel Routes, and Economic Transport in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico," to the students and faculty of the Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology. The defense will be held in 123 Lea Hall, on Tuesday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m. All interested parties are welcome.

President and Professor to Be Honored at Barbeque – Kappa Sigma is hosting its 4th annual Faculty Barbeque on April 16 at the Kappa Sigma House at 5 p.m. The barbeque will be casual with food being served from 5-6 and a brief presentation at 6 p.m., when the fraternity will honor this year's Faculty of the Year to Dr. Gamble and Dr. Strickler. All faculty are encouraged to attend.

Art Gallery Reception – The Decor & More Import Gallery will have an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14 for Amado Pena. The Gallery is located at 117 W. 4th St. in Clovis. Pena will be in Clovis on Wednesday, May 14 through Friday, May 16. The schedule is as follows: Wednesday Night 6-9 p.m. Reception; Thursday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-noon, Art Exhibition and Sales.

Signed original and prints from the famous art collection of Amado Pena will be for sale. Proceeds from sales will go for art scholarships to students attending at Clovis Community and Eastern New Mexico University. For more information, call 769.0393.

View the Heavens
– The public is invited to view the heavens at Oasis State Park (North parking lot) on Saturday, April 19, starting at dusk. A number of small telescopes will be available. Admission to the park is $4 per vehicle. Call 356.5331 for additional information.

A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday, April 26 – We Need Your Help for the "GREAT STRIDES" charity event, "A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis." The national society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has contacted me (Nicholas Wright) to organize a local fund raising event – the "Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis". Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, which affects approximately 30,000 children and adults in the US. A defective gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus. This results in the lungs, in particular, being unable to clean themselves properly and therefore making the sufferer susceptible to life-threatening infections. Currently there is no cure! We need your help to raise money to fund research to find a cure for this debilitating condition. This is a non-competitive walk/gentle "stroll" of around 10K/6mi. starting at the Greyhound Arena car park on N.Ave."O" at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. We will walk about three miles out of town to the junction of "RSV 6" and "RSV U" and back. The idea is that you pick up a sponsorship pamphlet from the biology department in Roosevelt Hall, (Room 201). Then using any means at your disposal, (this can include blackmail, extortion, etc!), obtain sponsors for your walk and collect the monies in advance. On the day of the walk you should arrive between 8 and 9 a.m. in advance to register and hand over your sponsorship money. Then we walk! Water will be available at the halfway point but as this is a gentle walk, you can bring your own if you wish! Kids are welcome but only if accompanied, and they cannot be "walkers"/sponsors in their own right, only adults please! The same applies to well-behaved pets! (on leads please – there may be traffic!). If you can collect $100 then you will be entitled to a free Cystic Fibrosis Foundation T-shirt; larger amounts can gain even better prizes! Young Reseracher to Speak on the Spread of Disease – Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, presents a talk by Michelle Girvan, presently of the Santa Fe Institute, at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, in COB 117. Ms. Girvan is a young researcher who uses mathematical models to investigate the effects of network structures on the behavior of complex systems. A particular focus of her research involves the spread of disease, which should be of concern to all of us in this era of rapid transportation and highly mobile populations. Her talk is titled "A Complex Systems Approach to Understanding Social, Biological, and Technological Networks."

Scholastic Bookfair Runs from April 14-18 – Student Council for Exceptional Children will sponsor a Scholastic Bookfair in the College of Education. Books for all ages will be available for purchase. The bookfair will run April 14-18 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Checks, cash and credit cards will be accepted. Come out and select some quality literature while supporting SCEC!

Master's Defense – Bobbie Duell will defend her Master's Thesis at the COB, Room 103, Monday, April 14, at noon. The defense will be led by Dr. Janet Roehl.

Free Educational Materials Being Given Away – The Instructional Resource Center at ENMU Golden Library is a Regional Evaluation Center for the New Mexico State Department of Education. Once a year we discard samples of instructional materials no longer in adoption. This year's discard day will be Saturday, April 19, at 8 a.m. in the foyer of Golden Library. Please note that this is two weeks earlier than normal.

Due to large turnouts in the past, we will have textbook sets and their component parts bundled together by grade level. The bundles will be available in the library foyer on a first-come basis.

Section 2/1996 includes Language Acquisitions, Reading Basal, Reading Integrated, Reading Skills, English as a Second Language, and Bilingual materials.

Local Artist to Display at Golden Library – The Golden Library will be featuring the artwork of Shirley Clingenpeel through April 28. Shirley, a Portales resident, will be displaying a selection of her best works. Included among these are portrait and landscape paintings. She enjoys all mediums but especially enjoys pastels and works with pastel colors, which she sometimes mixes with ink. The gallery is free and open to the public. ENMU-Roswell Sets Foundation Banquet – On Thursday, April 24, the Eastern New Mexico University-Foundation will host its Second Annual Foundation for the Future Banquet at 6 p.m. at the Roswell Country Club, 2601 Urton Road. The featured speaker will be Lt. Col. Jim Engelhard of the New Mexico Youth Challenge Academy. Tickets are $40 a person. All proceeds will benefit the ENMU-Roswell Foundation. Cinco de Mayo Softball/Horseshoe Tournament Set
– To enter the Cinco de Mayo double-elimination softball and horseshoe tournaments in Portales, contact Veda Urioste at 356.6662, ext. 18. The horeshoe tournament and coed softball tournament will be on Saturday, May 3. A full slate of other Cinco de mayo activities has also been set.

Endowed Scholarships and Departmental Awards Ceremony – On Tuesday, April 15, classes will be dismissed from 3:30-5 p.m. so that students and faculty may attend the Spring Endowed Scholarship and Department Awards Program. Early afternoon and evening classes will meet as usual. The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Endowed scholarships and department honors will be presented. Graduation honors will be presented at the Honors Convocation to be held Friday, May 9.

Stafford Loan Deadline – The deadline to apply for a Spring 2003 Stafford Loan is April 18. No spring loans will be processed after this date.

University Police Cell Phone for Routine Calls – The University Police (UP) carry a cell phone on duty between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday for routine call. The cell phone number is 760.2945, available anytime from 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday for routine help. All other calls should go through the Portales Police Department at 356.4404 ext. 0; this will contact the caller with the Portales Police dispatcher.

Cafeteria Prices for Faculty/Staff – The faculty/staff prices for meals in the Campus Crossroads (cafeteria) are as follows: Breakfast - $2.99; Lunch - $3.49; Dinner - $4.99.

Carve a Songbird – for ages 12 years through adult (ages 12-14 years must be accompanied by an adult) with Rev. Clyde Davis, First Presbyterian Church, Saturday, April 26, 12-5 p.m., JWLA-109. Materials include a fixed-blade knife and pencil. The fee is $20 with a $5 kit fee payable to the instructor to cover your carving blank. Please register by April 18.
