Marketing Professor Had
Quite the Marine Adventure
by Colleen Wright
Communication Services
Military
life offers a different kind of living than what we are used to
on the High Plains. Travel and adventure is why Dr. Dale Davis,
Eastern New Mexico University marketing professor, chose to join
the Marines.
Born and raised in the western part of New York, Dr. Davis dropped
out of high school to enlist in the Merchant Marines at the age
of 16. "Back then it was legal to sign up at 16," Dr.
Davis explains. "My parents were completely against it until
I finished high school, but I was afraid there might not be another
war to fight in, that it might be my only chance so I ran
away from home."
He was a sailor aboard civilian ships for one year, and then because
of an injury returned home to graduate. Directly after graduation
he enlisted in the Marine Corps, this time for different reasons.
"At the time there was something called the 'World War II Bill
of Rights'. The bill stated if you stayed in the Corps for three
years, your college education would be paid for. It seemed like
a good way to get my schooling funded."
Instead of going to school right away, Dr. Davis ended up staying
in the service longer, eventually becoming a Lieutenant Colonel.
"I was having so many great adventures, I was not ready to
retire yet." [more]

Planning Office Little Understood, but
Vital to Eastern's Mission
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
Have
you ever wondered where your professor evaluations go? Have you
ever wondered how retention (students staying in school) statistics
are found? The answer to both of these questions lies in the Office
of Planning Services at Eastern New Mexico University.
Planning Services is the major institutional research office at
ENMU, under the umbrella of the Office of Planning and Analysis.
Since ENMU is a federally- and state-funded institution, Planning
Services has to gather the information to report to the government.
They compile all the data about age, ethnicity, high school education,
credit hours, and hometowns of students, as well as data about faculty
and staff. They compile this data into fact books about students
and university employees and compile students' evaluations of their
instructors.
"We get to know the entire university," said Amy Holt,
associate
director of Institutional Research. [more]

ENMU-Roswell Acting Class to Present
'Bull in a China Shop' on April 19-21
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell acting students will present
"Bull in a China Shop" on April 19, 20, and 21. This whimsical
three-act comedy-mystery by C. B. Gilford was first produced by
Alfred Hitchcock as a television special and features many of the
director's particular flourishes. Two evening performances are scheduled
to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 and Monday, April 21.
The Sunday, April 20 matinee is set for 2 p.m. Tickets are $4 for
adults, $3 for seniors, and $2 for students.
The director and instructor for the class, Will Cass, said he did
not want to reveal too much of the plot so that the audience could
be kept in suspended amusement. "A group of senior citizens,
all adorable ladies, decide to break the law in a most outrageous
manner to meet the man of their dreams. If you enjoyed 'Arsenic
and Old Lace' or 'The Trouble With Harry', you should find this
well, your cup of tea." Kate Cox is producer and costumer
for the show.
The large cast and crew are members of the Liberal Arts beginning
acting class. Some roles have been triple-cast, so the roster of
performers will change for each performance. The actors, who also
double as the production crew, include Jeremy Acosta, Arthur Cobos,
Kellie Cobos, Rogena Cochran, Viridiana Dominguez, Ryan Drobel,
Eric Fairfield, T. J. Frederich, Rachel Greving, Rebecca Heimann,
Brandon House, Pauline Martin, Adam McMullen, Rosemarie Montoya-Charles,
Joseph Moore, Audra Nguyen, Lara Reddy, Christine Thurman, Erica
Whited and Lisa Wood-Chaidez.
Having to Deal with Unacceptable Employee
Behavior? Help is on the Way!
by Ronnie Birdsong
Vice President for University Relations and Enrollment Services
The Staff Development Task Force is sponsoring a SkillPath workshop
on "Dealing Effectively with Unacceptable Employee Behavior"
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.

The workshop will deal with such types as the "Antagonist,"
"Blameless Bob," "Whiner," "Thumb-Twiddler,"
"Tortoise," "Mr. Attitude," "Hand-Holder,"
"Early Retiree," "Worrywart" and "Clock-Watcher."
The workshop will give supervisors tips on how to get productivity,
cooperation and results from non-Spirit-of-Eastern types without
incurring resentment or damaging relationships.
Participants will learn such techniques as how to recognize the
15 warning signs that a problem is brewing, how to act not
react in a negative situation, offering constructive feedback,
choosing the right intervention technique, setting measurable performance
standards, how to determine when to terminate an employee and how
to conduct such a meeting, and how to be protected from wrongful
termination lawsuits.
While the University has offered several workshops on how to document
unacceptable employee behavior, this workshop is the first designed
to assist supervisors in dealing effectively with such employees.
These performance management methods will result in higher morale,
fewer discipline problems and increased productivity.
There is a charge of
$50 per participant (charged to ENMU departmental budgets) to help
cover the charges. The regular fee is $149.
Please call Candy at ext. 4490 to reserve your spot and give her
your budget number. This is on a first-come, first-serve basis with
a maximum of 40 participants.
