Having to Deal with
Unacceptable Employee Behavior? Help is on the Way!
by Ronnie Birdsong
Vice President for University Relations and Enrollment Services
The Staff Development Task Force is sponsoring a SkillPath workshop
on "Dealing Effectively with Unacceptable Employee Behavior"
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.

The workshop will deal with such types as the "Antagonist,"
"Blameless Bob," "Whiner," "Thumb-Twiddler,"
"Tortoise," "Mr. Attitude," "Hand-Holder,"
"Early Retiree," "Worrywart" and "Clock-Watcher."
The workshop will give supervisors tips on how to get productivity,
cooperation and results from non-Spirit-of-Eastern types without
incurring resentment or damaging relationships.
Participants will learn such techniques as how to recognize the
15 warning signs that a problem is brewing, how to act not
react in a negative situation, offering constructive feedback,
choosing the right intervention technique, setting measurable performance
standards, how to determine when to terminate an employee and how
to conduct such a meeting, and how to be protected from wrongful
termination lawsuits.
While the University has offered several workshops on how to document
unacceptable employee behavior, this workshop is the first designed
to assist supervisors in dealing effectively with such employees.
These performance management methods will result in higher morale,
fewer discipline problems and increased productivity.
There is a charge of
$50 per participant (charged to ENMU departmental budgets) to help
cover the charges. The regular fee is $149.
Please call Candy at ext. 4490 to reserve your spot and give her
your budget number. This is on a first-come, first-serve basis with
a maximum of 40 participants.

Stories
(may remember him from Marilyn

Memo)
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Horror
stories written by ENMU-Roswell Developmental Studies Lab instructor
Dr. Don Burleson have been selected for inclusion in two upcoming
publications. The first story titled "The Watcher at the Window"
will be published in a United Kingdom, Australian, and USA anthology
titled "Gathering the Bones: 34 Original Stories from the World's
Masters of Horror".
The three-country anthology is divided into sections, with one-third
of the stories from the U.S.,
one-third from Australia, and one-third from the U.K. Currently,
only the Australian edition has been printed.
"I was pleased, when I received a copy of the Australian edition
to see that I'm in there with Ray Bradbury," said Dr. Burleson.
"I wasn't aware they had received a story from him for the
volume. All three editions will have the same content," he
said.
Dr. Burleson also recently sold another short story called "Wait
for the Thunder" to a horror magazine called "Cemetery
Dance," a widely known and respected magazine in the genre.
Dr. Burleson's writing spans both fiction and nonfiction. His short
stories have appeared in many magazines and his work is also included
in numerous anthologies. He is also the author of several short
story collections, novels, and nonfiction works in the fields of
literary criticism and UFO studies. Dr. Burleson's novel, "Flute
Song" (from Black Mesa Press, reissued as "The Roswell
Crewman" ) was nominated for the Horror Writers Association's
Bram Stoker Award in 1997.
Born in Breckenridge, Texas, Dr. Burleson has bachelor's and master's
degrees in mathematics from Midwestern State University, a master's
degree in English from Rivier College, and a Ph.D. in English Literature
from Columbia Pacific University. He is a member of the International
UFO Museum and Research Center, the Horror Writers' Association,

ENMU-Roswell Acting Class
Presenting 'Bull in a China Shop' Through April 21
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell acting students will present
"Bull in a China Shop" through April 21. This whimsical
three-act comedy-mystery by C. B. Gilford was first produced by
Alfred Hitchcock as a television special and features many of the
director's particular flourishes. A final evening performance is
scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21. Tickets are $4 for
adults, $3 for seniors, and $2 for students.
The director and instructor for the class, Will Cass, said he did
not want to reveal too much of the plot so that the audience could
be kept in suspended amusement. (Those who can't wait might track
down someone who saw it on April 19 or 20.) "A group of senior
citizens, all adorable ladies, decide to break the law in a most
outrageous manner to meet the man of their dreams. If you enjoyed
'Arsenic and Old Lace' or 'The Trouble With Harry', you should find
this well, your cup of tea." Kate Cox is producer and
costumer for the show.
The large cast and crew are members of the Liberal Arts beginning
acting class. Some roles have been triple-cast, so the roster of
performers will change for each performance. The actors, who also
double as the production crew, include Jeremy Acosta, Arthur Cobos,
Kellie Cobos, Rogena Cochran, Viridiana Dominguez, Ryan Drobel,
Eric Fairfield, T. J. Frederich, Rachel Greving, Rebecca Heimann,
Brandon House, Pauline Martin, Adam McMullen, Rosemarie Montoya-Charles,
Joseph Moore, Audra Nguyen, Lara Reddy, Christine Thurman, Erica
Whited and Lisa Wood-Chaidez.

Rings at the Official Ring Presentation Ceremony, Friday, April

at 6:30 p.m., with the ceremony following at 7 p.m.

jewelry, but a symbol of the students' connection to Eastern New
Mexico University. This unique ring should become a symbol of tradition
at ENMU," said Janice Cowen, Alumni Affairs coordinator. She
added that the symbolism of receiving the ring should be second
only to receiving a diploma, a significant part of one's accomplishments
at Eastern.
Several ring options are available, including a diamond, for both
men and women. For more information, contact Ms. Cowen at 505.562.4251.

"Could
this be the year?" Although
no one would confess, several employees in the University
Theatre lobby before the Spirit of Eastern Awards on Thursday
could be seen nibbling furiously on cookies to mask nervousness
about their chances of taking home some hardware (and a check).
The more confident ones even dressed up and could be seen
stealing furtive glances at acceptance speeches tucked discreetly
in pockets and purses. However, as the sugar took effect,
it became harder to differentiate between the nervous and
the addicted.
