New Prices for Cafeteria Effective on May 1 – All Meal Plans Also Open to Faculty/Staff

Beginning Aug. 22 Crossroads (Ultimate Dining) Dining Hall will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Students with a Giant Hound plan may eat up to the 21 meals a week at any time the dinning hall is open. Those who select the Carte Blanche plan may eat as many meals as they desire any time the dining hall is open – including just stopping by for a quick desert or drink, etc. These meal plans are open to all students, faculty and staff.
Door prices in Crossroads for faculty and staff will be as follows:
Breakfast $ 3.40; Lunch $ 4.10; Dinner $ 5.00
Regular Door Prices in Crossroads for others is as follows:
Breakfast $ 5.15; Lunch $ 5.75; Dinner $ 6.95; Steak/Gourmet Dinner $ 8.50; Sunday Brunch – Community $ 6.95; Sunday Brunch – Students $ 6.25; Sunday Dinner $ 6.95.
Greyhound Buck$ will no longer be available after the end of summer school. Please use up any of these funds you may have. Beginning with the fall semester the only non-taxable dollars will be Silver Dollars.

ENMU Hosting New Mexico Clarinet Festival on April 29
– The Department of Music at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host the annual New Mexico Clarinet Festival on Tuesday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Music Building. The Festival features clarinet performers of all ages, including students, professionals and amateur players from across New Mexico. There is no competition this year, but there will be recitals and master classes for participants. Admission is free and open to all clarinet enthusiasts. Steel Drum Band Concert Set for April 30 – The Department of Music at Eastern New Mexico University will present a steel band concert at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30 on the Dallan Sanders Memorial Plaza. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move to the Campus Union Building lobby. The Steel Band is a student ensemble that performs Caribbean-style music, including calypso and Cuban salsa. The 12-member band is under the direction of Neil Rutland, associate professor of percussion and music technology. He also performs with the group. The Band performs in both the spring and fall semester. “The spring concert has, for the past several years, been presented as an outdoor concert, weather permitting,” Mr. Rutland said. Faculty Emeritus Luncheon Set for May 7 – The Friends of Eastern Foundation will host the annual Faculty Emeritus Luncheon on Wednesday, May 7 at noon in the Zia Room of the Campus Union Building. The Distinguished Faculty Emeriti awards will also be presented at the luncheon. This year's recipients include Dr. Penney Stewart Fawcett, Dr. Gary Pfaffenberger, Mr. Jack Scott and Dr. Paul Stangle. Members of the University community are cordially invited to attend the luncheon on a dutch-treat basis. Reservations can be made by calling the Office of Development, ext. 2412, by May 2.

New Graduates Commencement Reception Set for May 9 – A Commencement reception honoring Eastern New Mexico University graduates of the 2003 spring semester will be held Friday, May 9 from 4-5 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Union Building. Families and friends of the new graduates are also invited. The reception is sponsored by the ENMU Alumni Association. Commencement ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 in Greyhound Arena.

Commencement Showcase Recital Set for May 9 – The College of Fine Arts will present a "Commencement Showcase Recital" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. From solos to scenes, happy to sad, the evening will include visual and aural experiences provided by the talented students of the College of Fine Arts. This will be the swan song at ENMU for some graduating seniors. Admission is free, and the performance, which will last approximately one hour, will take place in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.

ENMU Alumnus/Judge Speaking at ENMU on May 1
– The Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity is hosting a free presentation by ENMU alumnus Stephen Quinn, Ninth Judicial District Court Judge, Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Pecos Room in the Campus Union Building. Judge Quinn is speaking as part of Phi Alpha Delta’s Law Day activities. The topic of Judge Quinn’s presentation will be “Independent Courts Protect Our Liberties.” The Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity will also have an information table in the Campus Union Building lobby May 1 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 5-7 p.m.

2003 Legislative Internships Available – .All applicants must be full-time students at one of the six New Mexico universities or recent graduates. Application deadline is May 5 to Dr. Anthony Schroeder. The selection will be announced May 19. Job starts July 7 at 8 a.m. The person selected will work with the legislature, committee chairs, and legislative committees. The applicant will be doing research on a variety of topics. The salary is $9,000 for six months (July-December). Computer research skills, composition skills, development of arguments and evidence, and understanding of the legislative process are all essential. The current interns are ENMU graduates. Must submit: (1) Letter of intent/interest and (2) resume. All interested students should visit with Dr. Sue Strickler or Dr. Schroeder about the work demands.

Independent Research Presentation – Please join the faculty of the College of Business in COB 128 on Wednesday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. as Molly Zettel, MBA student, presents the results of her independent research project, “The relationship between employee constructive thinking ability and organizational commitment”. A copy of the final paper is available for review in COB 204.

Thesis Defense – Ms. Stephanie Parrish, graduate student under the supervision of Dr. Zhiming Liu in the Department of Biology, will defend her thesis on May 2 at 4 p.m. in RH125. The title of her thesis is "Reproductive Effects in Female Western Mosquito Fish Exposed to the Pesticide Lindane." Faculty and students are cordially invited.

Thesis Defense
– Sunny Wood will present his thesis, "The Use of Documentary Video in an Archaeological Discipline," to the students and faculty of the Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology. Spring Tea and Show Set for May 4 – The public is invited to the La Escalera Art Guild Spring Tea and Show from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 in the Memorial Building at 200 E. 7th and Abilene in Portales.

Roswell Church Hosting World-Class Skier on April 29 – At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, Grace Community Church at 935 W. Mescalero in Roswell will present Eric Alexander, world-class skier, climber and mountaineer. In May 2001, Eric defied all odds and scaled Mt. Everest with his blind friend, Erik Weihenmayer, for the first ever blind ascent of Mt Everest. More recently, Eric was instrumental in assisting Erik Weihenmayer in his goal of summating the highest points on each of the seven continents, with trips to Russia to climb and ski Mt. Elbrus and to Australia this past September to climb Mt. Kosciusko. Eric has been featured on NBC's Today Show, Dateline NBC, Time Magazine and has delivered motivational talks to several Fortune 100 companies.

New Mexico Fellowship Program Seeking Applicants – The New Mexico Fellowship Program is seeking undergraduates and graduates to work in state agencies this summer. Work will be in Santa Fe/ Albuquerque or other area or local area if approved. Seeking students from a variety of academic areas. Local Artist to Display at Golden Library – The Golden Library will be featuring the artwork of Shirley Clingenpeel through April 28. Shirley, a Portales resident, will be displaying a selection of her best works. Included among these are portrait and landscape paintings. She enjoys all mediums but especially enjoys pastels and works with pastel colors, which she sometimes mixes with ink. The gallery is free and open to the public. University Police Cell Phone for Routine Calls – (new Monday Memo format) "It looks great...love the changes...GOLD STAR!"The University Police (UP) carry a cell phone on duty between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday for routine call. The cell phone number is 760.2945, available anytime from 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday for routine help. All other calls should go through the Portales Police Department at 356.4404 ext. 0; this will contact the caller with the Portales Police dispatcher.

Extended Learning Non-Credit Courses – The following is a list of non-credit course offerings. Please call 562.2165 for more information or to register.
Aqua Aerobics – Eight, three-day rotations with Kristy Jones, Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays, 7-7:50 a.m., June 2-July 24, Natatorium. The fee is $12 per rotation or discounted to $90 prepaid for all 8 rotations. Please register by Friday prior to each rotation.
Kids' College – Amanda Mayberry will return as Lead Teacher for children grouped 5-7 years and 8-10 years participating in art, reading, computers, swimming and more! Expect the usual walk to the park for lunch sponsored by the city of Portales, year-end variety show/pizza party and annual field trip. Headquarters are located again this year at the Technology Building. The fee is $55 per week, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Jun 2-July 24.
Swimming – for ages 4 years and up with Kristi Jones, Red Cross Certified Instructor, Natatorium. Three, 8-day rotations, Mondays-Thursdays, 9-9:50 a.m. are available beginning: Rotation #1-June 2; #2- June 23; and #3-July 14. Registration per rotation is $40 and includes a Red Cross certification card for the level passed. Enrollment is limited and parental consent required.
