New Interactive ITV Capabilities
Between ENMU-Portales and ENMU-Roswell
is Win-Win Situation for Entire ENMU System
by Dr. Gerry Huybregts
Dean of College of Business/Director of Extended Learning
Monday,
April 21 was an historic occasion for instructional television (ITV)
for the Eastern New Mexico University system.
Eastern broadcast its first interactive class between Roswell and
Portales. Students from Roswell and Ruidoso met in the ENMU-Roswell
"send" classroom and broadcast their presentations
to Portales students in the Roosevelt Hall ITV classroom. Portales
students broadcast their presentations to the Roswell students.
Both sets of students were able to see and hear each other, and
use "PowerPoint" to assist in their presentations.
The interaction was good, although the students initially seemed
a little overwhelmed/reticent.
Those owed special gratitude include the KENW folks, Jim Zupancic
in particular, and the telecom folks, Rick Bresler in particular,
for setting things up. Without their hard work, this would not have
happened. Dr. Lee Weyant is also owed a big thanks for letting his
students be used as guinea pigs.
Having this facility available will open up the options for ENMU-Portales
and ENMU-Roswell. While it may initially lead to some scheduling
difficulties, overcoming these minor hurdles will result in a big
leap forward. It means that ENMU-Portales will be able to use resource
faculty in Roswell to teach for classes in Portales. It will also
mean that Portales faculty can be stationed at ENMU-Roswell and
continue to teach for ENMU-Portales.
It is a win-win situation for both campuses, and an historic occasion
for the entire ENMU system.

Department
of Music Presenting 'Feel the Spirit' on April 29
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
The Department of Music at Eastern New Mexico University will
present a choral concert, "Feel the Spirit," on Tuesday,
April 29 at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.
"Feel the Spirit" will feature the University
Singers and the Chamber Singers (two student groups) with guest
solos by ENMU faculty members Ms. Marsha Brandon, adjunct voice
instructor, Dr. Jeanie Wozencraft-Ornellas, professor of voice,
and Dr. David Duke, assistant professor of voice. Instrumentalists
include Ms. Cheryl Pachak-Brooks, instructor of piano, on piano;
Dr. Tracy Carr, assistant professor of music, on oboe; and Brandon
Boerio, timpani. It will be directed by Dr. David Gerig, dean of
the College of Fine Arts and professor of music. There are approximately
75 students involved in the performance.
The groups will perform three works: "Requiem," by John
Rutter, "Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103," by Johannes Brahms,
and "Serenade to Music," by Ralph Vaughan Williams. According
to Dr. Gerig, "Requiem" is a work that combines Latin
and English texts from Catholic and Anglican burial services. The
result is a work that stresses hope for the living instead of wrath
for sinners. "Ziguenerlieder, Op. 103" is a set of 11
gypsy-style pieces for piano and choir. Brahms chose his texts and
tunes from an existing Hungarian folk collection. "Serenade
to Music," extolling the virtues of music, is based on Shakespeare's
play, "The Merchant of Venice."
Admission is free and open to the public. For more information,
call Dr. Gerig at 505.562.2373.

Travels
to ENMU-Roswell On Friday morning
Jennifer Poyer (in middle on right), webmaster at ENMU-Portales,
traveled to Roswell to participate in the discussion of proposals
for webmaster services at ENMU-Roswell. Here, Jennifer evaluates
a comment from (blue shirt) Art Leible, dean of Information
Services at ENMU-R. Other participants were (clockwise from
Art): Donna Gutierrez, Raul deLara, Jacob Puckett, (Jennifer),
and Roberta Bruce. The Monday Memo editor fibbed a
bit in the patriotic photo caption above when he said he drove
all the way to Roswell just to take that photo he also
chauffeured Jennifer in case any participants in this discussion
needed refreshments.
