A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis – We Need Your Help for the "GREAT STRIDES" charity event, "A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis." The national society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has contacted me (Nicholas Wright) to organize a local fund raising event – the "Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis". Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, which affects approximately 30,000 children and adults in the US. A defective gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus. This results in the lungs, in particular, being unable to clean themselves properly and therefore making the sufferer susceptible to life-threatening infections. Currently there is no cure! We need your help to raise money to fund research to find a cure for this debilitating condition. This is a non-competitive walk/gentle "stroll" of around 10K/6mi. starting at the Greyhound Arena car park on N.Ave."O" at 9 aa.m. on Saturday, April 26. We will walk about three miles out of town to the junction of "RSV 6" and "RSV U" and back. The idea is that you pick up a sponsorship pamphlet from the biology department in Roosevelt Hall, (Room 201). Then using any means at your disposal, (this can include blackmail, extortion, etc!), obtain sponsors for your walk and collect the monies in advance. On the day of the walk you should arrive between 8 and 9 a.m. in advance to register and hand over your sponsorship money. Then we walk! Water will be available at the halfway point but as this is a gentle walk, you can bring your own if you wish! Kids are welcome but only if accompanied, and they cannot be "walkers"/sponsors in their own right, only adults please! The same applies to WELL BEHAVED pets! (on leads please – there may be traffic!). If you can collect $100 then you will be entitled to a free Cystic Fibrosis Foundation T-shirt; larger amounts can gain even better prizes! We hope to have a City Official start us off at 9 a.m.! So please join us on the 26th. More details can be obtained from me, Nick Wright: Office phone, 562.2543. Home! phone, (leave message), 356.2363. Email: "nicholas.wright@enmu.edu" THANKS!

A particular focus of her research involves the spread of disease, which should be of concern to all of us in this era of rapid transportation and highly mobile populations. Biology Student Wins Research Award at Texas Tech – Muleshoe resident Stephanie Perez, a biology graduate student at ENMU, presented a research paper at the Student Research Day conference at Texas Tech University, Health Sciences Center, in Lubbock on March 28. Perez received a first place award in the graduate students’ category for her presentation of research, which studied the levels of bacterial resistance to an antibiotic called tetracycline in agricultural water environments.

Perez is one member of the project team composed of student and faculty researchers at ENMU: Celsa Gallegos, Sabrina Mariner, Jonathan Burgos, and Dr. Manuel Varela all collaborated on the research project. Gallegos and Mariner are both undergraduate biology students at ENMU; Burgos is a recently graduated master’s student at ENMU who has been accepted into the Ph.D. programs at SUNY and Colorado State University. Varela is an assistant professor of biology at ENMU.

The research team found that the proportion of tetracycline resistant bacteria in agricultural water was higher than in soil, suggesting a potential for dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the environment. A mode of transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria is thus suggested from soil to water and from water to humans.
