Lifelong
Wellness Being Initiated at Eastern
(participants to receive college credit
for kinds of exercise and times chosen by them)
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
All employees at Eastern New Mexico University, as well as community
members, are being encouraged to improve their health this fall
while at the same time earning an hour of college credit.
Eastern employees will receive a tuition-waiver for the course (in
addition to their regular course-tuition waiver), while community
members can enroll for the regular one-hour tuition rate. Seniors
65 and over will receive a special tuition rate of $5.
Eastern is developing the Lifelong Wellness program
to support individual efforts to enhance well-being and quality
of life, according to Dr. Mary Drabbs, chair of ENMUs Department
of Physical Education and Health.
Lifelong Wellness workshops are designed to help people 30
years of age and older to start a physical activity program, to
increase the effectiveness of a current program, or to develop skills
to expand physical activity into new areas, said Dr. Drabbs.
According to Dr. Drabbs, benefits to individuals include improved
health, increased energy and increased sense of well-being. Eastern
will benefit from improved health of employees, facilitation of
non-work interactions among employees, and increased
number of credit hours.
Those participating can choose the kind of exercise they prefer
and the time they wish to do it. This can include everything from
walking, to swimming, to basketball to tennis to lifting weights,
etc. The only stipulation is that it must occur on the ENMU campus.
Twenty-four workouts of at least 30 minutes each during the semester
are required to receive a satisfactory grade. Only one
workout per day can be counted.
Brown-bag presentations on health, which can be counted as a workout,
will also be offered periodically throughout the session.
All participants must be admitted to the University. There is no
charge to be admitted. For admissions information, call 505.562.2178
(1.800.FOR.ENMU).
For more information on the wellness program, call Dr. Drabbs at

Dr. Patricia Thatcher, an alumna and present faculty
member of Eastern New Mexico University, recently received her doctorate
degree in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is
currently an assistant professor of English and the writing program
director.
Dr. Thatcher grew up in Portales. She planned to go
to Southern Methodist University after her graduation, but soon
changed her mind in April of her senior year. Originally a music
major, Dr. Thatcher also heard good things about the department,
and decided to go to Eastern instead. Her parents were both alumni
of the University.
"All of my friends were going to Eastern. I decided that I
didn't want to get away as much as I thought," Dr. Thatcher
said.
Dr. Thatcher was involved in a lot of activities when she was an
undergraduate. She served as the president of Chi Omega, rush chairman
for Panhellenic, treasurer of the board of finance for the University,
and president of her dorm. She performed with the ENMU band and
the first ENMU drill team.
She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in history in 1969
and then followed with a master of arts degree in English in 1970.
She taught high school English and history classes for 25 years
and also served as the Coordinator of Teacher Education at ENMU
from 1999-2001.
Romance also plays a role in Dr. Thatcher's Eastern experience.

Graduate Had to Adjust from Melrose to
the Big City of Portales
by
Tracy Henderson
Communication Services
"I
will strongly encourage my children to attend Eastern."
Steven Fulkrod
Steven
Fulkrod had to adjust when he went from small-town Melrose, New
Mexico, to Eastern New Mexico University. But Eastern prepared him
and made his next
move into
his career as the director of administration and corporate controller
for the Maryland Center for Arts and Technology (MCAT), a non-profit
workforce development company in Baltimore, Md., an easy adjustment.
The strong reputation of the business school at Eastern
caught Stevens attention and with the help of scholarships
he was able to attend Eastern the school of his choice. He
soon learned there was more at ENMU then just a quality education.
Everyone on staff made me feel part of the University. There
was always something to do on campus activities at the Student
Union, Coffee Shop, or the game room, movie nights, or just lounging
in Eddy Hall, Steven said.
Stevens experience at Eastern prepared him for his career
by showing him how people interact with each other and each person
can make a difference in their community through action. I
believe that Eastern helped me bring out abilities that were untapped
before in leadership and work situations, Steven said.
Eastern provided me with skills I needed to learn in new situations,
understand people better, and position me for success on the career
path I have been following since graduation, he added.
While attending Eastern Steven was involved in Student Government,
and the Office Education Association (currently Business Professionals
of America) where he served as local, state and national officer.
He also was a graduate research assistant for former ENMU president
Everett Frost and worked part-time in the Golden Library. These
activities gave him the opportunity to travel and an understanding
of how the structure of organizations depends on the solid base
of everyday work.
Steven graduated from ENMU in May 1987 with a Bachelor of Business
Administration. He helped build the non-profit company he currently
works for from the ground up. Through his career, he has written
three personnel handbooks and three accounting procedure handbooks,
served as Harford County Public Ethics Panel Secretary, Eight Russell
Avenue Condominium Association Secretary and Treasurer, member of
the Society of Human Resource Management, and has chaired many committees
for Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
When asked who inspired him most at Eastern, Steven said, "Mr.
J. Henry Young, my first accounting and academic advisor; Dr. Doris
Fleming, my Office Education Association (now Business Professionals
of America) advisor; Dr. Victoria Sanchez, my Human Resources professor
and advisor; Mrs. Mary Lee Morris, my department supervisor in the
Cataloging Department at Golden Library; and Dean Herschel Potts,
my Student Government Advisor."
Steven says that he still returns to campus to visit. Every
time I am back in New Mexico, I cruise the campus to see what is
going on. I had a great time. When the time is right, I will strongly
encourage my children to attend Eastern.

ENMU-Roswell
A group of 41students enrolled in the Special Services Occupational
Training Program at ENMU-Roswell received completion certificates
and words of encouragement during the 16th annual graduation ceremony
on campus, July 31. The Special Services program, under the direction
of Linda Green, provides occupational training, tutoring, housing,
and adaptive equipment for students with disabilities. After graduation,
most students are able to find employment and live independently.

In her remarks, Ms. Green thanked the parents for
their support throughout the past year and the ENMU-Roswell administration,
the instructors and the staff for their commitment to students with
disabilities. She told the students they will be missed.
Dr. Judy Armstrong, provost, told students that this was "their
day" and to be thankful for the power that education gives
them. She called Ms. Green the "driving spark" behind
the program, which is unique in the United States. "We are
privileged to be a part of it and we have been privileged to know
you," she said.
Student speaker Hava Berry graduated with a certificate in Food
Service. She said she learned the most about life through living
in the dorms on campus. She told her fellow students not to let
people take advantage of them or to get side tracked from their
goals. "Moving on is part of life," she said. "Take
pride in yourself. Have faith in yourself. We didn't come this far
to quit."
Griffyn Lane was the second student speaker. She completed her training
in welding and plans to become a certified welder. She thanked all
of her instructors for helping her be the person she is today. She
said the times when she had to try hard were the best of times for
her and she learned a lot along the way. "The instructors taught
us to be confident in ourselves and that we can be an important
part of our society. We learned from the best of the best,"
she said.
A 1997 graduate of the program, Rebecca Amador, was the featured
commencement speaker. Ms. Amador is currently an independent living
specialist with the Choices Center for Independent Living in Roswell.
In her job, she helps people with disabilities to live independently
and she said it is a job she loves. She encouraged students to be
realistic and set goals that clearly state what they want to achieve.
"Make a commitment to yourself. Be persistent and don't give
up," she said. "Be good to yourself. Someone will see
your potential and give you a chance."

ENMU-Roswell Announces Bond Issue Campaign
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Today (Aug. 7), Dr. Judy Armstrong, provost of Eastern New Mexico
University-Roswell, announced plans for the future expansion of
the University. A key part of those plans is a local general obligation
bond issue referendum, which will be decided by Chaves County voters
on Nov. 4.
The bond question on the ballot will generate up to $8.1 million
for construction, renovation, and furnishing of buildings on campus
over the next 10 years. The bond referendum will renew the current
property tax levy in place and will not increase taxes.
J. Phelps White III is chairing a group of community members who
will be promoting the bond issue for the campus. Mr. White announced
the campaign theme is "Vision 20/20: Focus on the Future."
