Graduate's Family Has Extensive ENMU Connection
by Daniel Lucero
Communication Services

Over the years the Henry siblings have made Eastern New Mexico University their home. In the spring of 2000, Emily (Henry) Moore graduated with a degree in biology; in the spring of 2003, Sara Henry graduated with a degree in business and now in the fall of 2003 the third Henry sibling, Patrick Henry Jr., will graduate with a degree in agriculture this Saturday, Dec. 13

enmu photo

However, the trend of Henry siblings doesn’t stop there: currently, Andrew Henry is attending ENMU with plans to graduate in May of 2005, and the youngest sister, Eileen Henry – currently attending Alamogordo High School – has plans to attend Eastern in the fall of 2005. The family jokes that since four of them have already gone to Eastern, then the last of their siblings should go for free.

Emily is currently living in Albany, N.Y., with her husband, Aaron Moore. She is employed with Albany Molecular Research, Organichem Corporation in Rensselaer, NY.

Sara moved to Tucson, Ariz., in the summer of 2003 where she is working as a human resource manager for Sierra Landscaping.

Patrick, the soon-to-be-graduate, has plans to pursue a career with BNSF Railroad in Clovis.

Patrick said the reason he attended Eastern was “because I enjoyed the small- school atmosphere. I made a lot of friends, had a lot of fun, and also got a good education,” he said with a smile. He also mentioned that Dr. Dann Brown, associate professor of agriculture, influenced him and his siblings the most and has become a family friend.

All five siblings will be in Portales for Patrick’s graduation.

ENMU Graduate Authors Book on Influential, but Ignored, Educator
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services

An alumnus of Eastern New Mexico University recently wrote his first book. A Disciplined Progressive Educator: The Life and Career of William Chandler Bagley was written by Dr. J. Wesley Null, currently an assistant professor of education at Baylor University.

enmu photo

“I chose to write about Bagley because I think he is a significant figure in American educational history who has been completely ignored and misrepresented,” Dr. Null said. “He also puts forth a tradition in educational philosophy and teacher education curriculum that is sound and that merits additional study and attention.”

The biography details Bagley’s childhood, from growing up in Detroit to attending school at Cornell, and also his professional career at schools such as University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Columbia University. Bagley was known as a demanding teacher who worked to improve the status of the teaching profession.

“When private institutions expand their business schools at the same time that they eliminate their teacher education curriculum, they define teaching as a low-class vocation. I think this is a serious problem for our culture. Bagley would agree,” Dr. Null said.

Dr. Null is a native New Mexican, originally from Artesia. His parents were both teachers. “I chose ENMU because I wanted to be a teacher and because Eastern's College of Education had a great reputation,” Dr. Null said.

After graduating from ENMU in 1995 with a bachelor of science degree in education, he received a 1998 master’s degree in education. While at ENMU, he was a resident assistant in DeBaca Hall and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Dr. Null credits his success to three of his ENMU professors: Dr. Kathy Peca, professor of education administration; Dr. Alan Garrett, professor of education and chair of the educational studies department; and Dr. Mark Isham, associate professor of education foundations.

“All of them were critically important to the fantastic education that was offered to me at ENMU,” Dr. Null said.

He is currently working on his second book, tentatively titled The Battle for Teacher Education Curriculum: Pedagogy and Purpose in American Higher Education,
1880--1930.

ENMU Graduate Student is Finalist for Master's Thesis Award
by Daniel Lucero
Communication Services

An Eastern New Mexico University graduate student was selected as a finalist for the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) UMI Distinguished Master's Thesis Award. Jonathan Burgos was selected out of 21 nominees as one of the five finalists. Jonathan's title of his thesis was "Molecular Microbial Ecology of Multiple Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria."

In his thesis he discussed how resistant to antibiotics isolated bacteria from dairy topsoil used in dairy farms are and how it affects older farms compared to newer farms. He also tried to determine the molecular reason for antibiotic resistance. According to Burgos, "I determined that the bacteria were multiple antibiotic resistant to four antibiotics (chlormpheniol, nalidixic acid, tetracycline, and penicillin) and that there was no correlation between antibiotic resistance and dairy farm age."

Burgos, who received his undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University in Central Pennsylvania, said he noticed a change in the people when he moved from the east to the southwest. "Everyone was friendly; professors always had time to answer questions, and, above all, I got the chance to grow as an independent writer."

When asked who influenced him at Eastern, Burgos said, "Dr. Manuel Varela. His vast knowledge made me work harder than I had ever worked before." While working for his master's, Burgos said Dr. Varela "would quiz me on a regular basis to keep me on track of everything." Burgos added, "In addition to teaching me factual knowledge and protocols, he taught me that in life NOTHING is impossible."

Burgos said other Eastern people who influenced him were Dr. Zhiming Liu, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Marvin Lutnesky, chair of the Department of Biology; and Dr. Phil Shelly, dean of the Graduate School, "because they were always available when I needed help and always could answer my questions."

Currently, Burgos is working on his Ph.D. in microbiology at State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y.

As for his thesis, he was excited about learning it was selected as one of the finalists. "I could not fathom the fact that other people actually liked my work other than my professors and me."

The next step for his thesis, Burgos noted, is trying to get it published sometime next year. He is also keeping his fingers crossed that he is the winner of the WAGS/UMI Distinguishing Master's Thesis Award – which will be announced in March.

For more information, contact Dr. Varela at 505.562.2464.

ENMU-Roswell Presents 'Smoke Outta My Hair!'

Story and photos by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell

In an effort to raise awareness about the negative effects of smoking, ENMU-Roswell recently presented 'Smoke Outta My Hair'.

Sponsored by the Student Activity Board and the Smoking Cessation Program, the event included a number of activities throughout the day. Most notably, those interested received a temporary hair coloring to symbolize the smoke that lingers in hair long after the cigarette is extinguished.

enmu photo

The event was centered on the importance of a support group and 'friends helping friends' to quit smoking.

Students and smoking cessation staff also provided free information on smoking cessation classes, patches and gum that were available for those who wanted to quit smoking. Prizes and food were offered throughout the day as well.

The Smoking Cessation program at ENMU-Roswell is funded by the New Mexico Department of Health. The 'Smoke Outta My Hair' event was a prelude to the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

The Smokeout encourages smokers to quit cigarettes for at least one day, in the hope they will quit forever. More people quit smoking on this day than on any other day of the year.
