Math Professor Receiving National Attention
for 'Rubric' Reform in Teaching
by Shane Brown
Communication Services
Dr. Regina Aragon, associate professor of mathematics at Eastern New
Mexico University, has
been receiving national attention for her rubric" approach
to teaching math.
According to Dr. Aragon, the rubric" approach is a matrix
which categorizes different levels of mastery of math concepts.
Dr. Aragon noted that her "rubric" approach was initiated
as a result of ENMU's institutional initiative to use classroom- based
assessment, spearheaded by the Assessment Office.
She made a presentation on the projects she used for Assessment in her
college algebra math classes at the 2002 joint meetings of the Mathematical
Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
As a result of her presentation, Dr. Aragon was invited to be on a radio
talk show, Math Medley, that airs out of Phoenix. [more]

Valentine Love,
But Not Many Plans, in the ENMU Air
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
It
is only a few days before Valentine's Day and love, though not many
plans, is in the air at Eastern New Mexico University.
There are many theories about how Valentine's Day started. It is known
that the holiday is named after St. Valentine, but the Catholic Church
has canonized at least three martyred saints named Valentine, leaving
the history of Valentine's Day somewhat mysterious.
One story contends that Valentine sent the first "Valentine"
to a girl while imprisoned and signed it "From Your Valentine."
Another legend says that during the Middle Ages, Feb. 14 was commonly
known as the beginning of the birds' mating season, so that day was
chosen to celebrate romance. [more]

ENMU Presenting 'Arsenic and Old Lace' in
University Theatre as Valentine Treat
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Easte rn
New Mexico University is presenting the perfect play for Valentines
Day. Arsenic and Old Lace combines elements of a murder/mystery
with a romantic comedy with traditional family values.
Performances are Feb. 13-15 in the University Theatre Center Mainstage
at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students, $5 for ages 12 and under, $6
for senior citizens and $7 for general admission.
Arsenic and Old Lace is a madcap comedy written
by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Daryl Phillipy, assistant professor
of theatre. The play opened on Broadway in 1941 and has become extremely
popular in performances around the world.
We chose it for this season because it is lighter fare and reminded
people of days ago, Phillipy said. People remember the 1944
classic film version with Cary Grant.
Mortimer Brewster, a play critic who returns home with his fiancé,
is played by ENMU student Ryan Cook. His two older aunts, Abby and Martha
Brewster, are played by ENMU students Ruth Browne and Melanie Maez.
The play also fulfills the senior recital for Tara Miller, the set designer.
Advanced tickets are available through the theatre box office on Feb.
5 from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tickets, call 562.2714.

Q. What hapened to the
card catalog in Golden Library?
A. Golden Library does not have a card
catalog anymore. The Library now uses "The Pack," a
public access catalog to locate books and materials on-line. Anyone
in the world can find out what books the Library has. Books are loaned
to other libraries worldwide.
Also, did you know, Special Collections and Archives has:
The fourth-largest science fiction collection
in the world.
The original manuscript of the Empire Strikes Back.
A real silver-bound book an inch-and-a-half tall.
A giant book three-foot tall.
