by Shane Brown

Dr. Regina Aragon, associate professor of mathematics at Eastern New Mexico University, regina aragonhas been receiving national attention for her “rubric" approach to teaching math.

According to Dr. Aragon, the “rubric" approach is a matrix which categorizes different levels of mastery of math concepts.

She made a presentation on the projects she used for Assessment in her college algebra math classes at the 2002 joint meetings of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

Valentine Love, But Not Many Plans, in the ENMU Air
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services

saint valentineIt is only a few days before Valentine's Day and love, though not many plans, is in the air at Eastern New Mexico University.

There are many theories about how Valentine's Day started. It is known that the holiday is named after St. Valentine, but the Catholic Church has canonized at least three martyred saints named Valentine, leaving the history of Valentine's Day somewhat mysterious.

One story contends that Valentine sent the first "Valentine" to a girl while imprisoned and signed it "From Your Valentine." Another legend says that during the Middle Ages, Feb. 14 was commonly known as the beginning of the birds' mating season, so that day was chosen to celebrate romance. [more]

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Eastearsenic and old lace in pntrn New Mexico University is presenting the perfect play for Valentine’s Day. “Arsenic and Old Lace” combines elements of a murder/mystery with a romantic comedy with traditional family values.

Performances are Feb. 13-15 in the University Theatre Center Mainstage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students, $5 for ages 12 and under, $6 for senior citizens and $7 for general admission.

A. Golden Library does not have a card catalog anymore. The Library now uses "The Pack," – a public access catalog to locate books and materials on-line. Anyone in the world can find out what books the Library has. Books are loaned to other libraries worldwide.

Also, did you know, Special Collections and Archives has:

The fourth-largest science fiction collection in the world.
The original manuscript of the Empire Strikes Back.
A real silver-bound book an inch-and-a-half tall.
A giant book three-foot tall
