ENMU's MBA Program Marketing Itself as 'Closer
Than You Think'
(taking road show to Roswell, Ruidoso,
Hobbs, Carlsbad and Clovis)
by Shane Brown
Communication Services
Eastern New Mexico University's Master of Business Administration
(MBA) program is allowing students around eastern New Mexico to earn
a master's degree in their hometowns.
The program has been around since the 1970s, usually averaging around
39 students, but recently that number has been rising. The reason is
because of a new marketing strategy, according to Dr. Lee Weyant, assistant
professor of management and graduate coordinator.
When Dr. Weyant became the MBA coordinator 18 months ago, he decided
to refocus on
marketing the MBA program. "I wanted to market the
program a little more aggressively, especially at the ITV (instructional
TV) sites," Dr. Weyant said.
With help from his graduate assistants to coordinate newspaper
and radio ads, Dr. Weyant schedules periodic information meetings at
the ITV sites in Roswell, Hobbs, Clovis, and Ruidoso. These meetings
provided general information about the MBA and emphasized the ENMU MBA
is "Closer than you think". [more]

Regional Science and Engineering Fair at ENMU. One of six regional science
fairs affiliated with the Intel International Science and Enginering
Fair, the Regional Fair has been held at Eastern since 1986. The competition
is for sixth through twelfth graders in the southeastern part of the

Flight Safety Training Center Funding Approved
at ENMU-Roswell
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Pilot training and research at the Flight Safety Training Center at
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell will continue thanks to federal
funding approved in the 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The bill contains
$3 million for the joint university-industry project, which trains commercial
airline pilots and collects research data utilizing advanced 'in-flight
simulation' technology.
Through this training, pilots learn how to respond to loss-of-control
aircraft situations, which is the leading cause of all commercial aviation
accidents. The program began operations one year ago. Approximately
80 pilots have completed the training, with about 3,000 more on a waiting
list. [more]

Departments Invited to Showcase Themselves
During Science Fair
by Rosemary Mathews
Science Fair Secretary
Attention, Academic Departments: Every year Eastern New Mexico University
hosts the Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
This year's fair is scheduled for Saturday, March 1. Please consider
participating in an open house that will showcase your department.
For instance the Science Department always hosts an open house for the
6th through 12th graders who bring their science projects to exhibit
on that day. We expect about 200 exhibitors, in addition to their parents
and teachers, and some siblings.
Many students are coming to a college campus for the first time, so
all departments are encouraged to have a presence on this day. For example,
non-science departments could produce a display with a scientific theme,
or help out with the machinations of Fair Day itself. To give you an
idea of the kind of presentation we have in mind, email
rosemary.mathews@enmu.edu or robert.mctaggart@enmu.edu
for more information.
Science Fair Web Page
The web page for the Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering
Fair, being hosted by ENMU on March 1, can be found at http://academic.enmu.edu/mctaggar/www/ScienceFair.html.
The site also has a copy of the judges' reply form for those who would
like to judge.

Quote of the Week
"Just want to let you know we appreciate
your work. And we have been talking to Stephanie since she has been
at home, and she is really enjoying ENMU. She has talked to a lot of
her friends that are at different schools. She is very happy with her
choice to go to Portales; her decision was an excellent one and she
enjoys her classes and everybody. She earned 5 A's and 2 B's for the
semester grades. Again thanks a million! Dennis Powell

Although They Deny It
This is rumored to be the ENMU-Roswell
Faculty/Staff Basketball Team which has challenged the grizzled
veterans from ENMU-Portales to a contest. Their clever cover story
is that this was actually part of the group of 21 faculty and
staff that attended Community College Day on Feb. 17 at the Legislature
in Santa Fe, which recognizes the programs and students in New
Mexico's 20 community colleges. At any rate, pictured are (L-R):

Bill Jones. (Secret scouting reports peg Jones as the probable
starting center.)
