AEOP Valentine Stuff
for Sweeties AEOP is selling stuff for
your sweetie as a Valentine's fundraiser in February. Items include

also be selling raffle tickets for a basket which includes all of the
above, wine glasses and sparkling red grape juice. Suckers $1, Soaps/gift

Meetings for Student Teacher Applications Set
All ENMU students who plan to student teach during
the Fall 2003 semester must attend a pre-application meeting to receive
the required information concerning application procedures. Three session
have been scheduled and student may choose the session that is most
convenient to their schedule. A session is scheduled for 12 - 1 p.m.
or 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. on Feb.10 in the Aztec Room, Campus Union Building.
Feb.11 session from 6 - 7 p.m. in the Aztec Room, Campus Union Building.
During the session students will complete a pre-application packet indicating
intent to student teach during the Fall 2003 semester. ATTENDANCE IS
MANDATORY! Roswell and Ruidoso student teacher pre-application meetings
will be announced at a later date.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at Portales High School
Some students at Portales High School are selling Krispy Kreme
doughnuts from now until Feb. 15. They will then be able to pick them
up on Feb. 22 at the Portales High School gym from 9 a.m. to noon. They

Celebrate Move to 'The Alley'
Come celebrate our Grand Opening! College Success Program, Multicultural
Affairs, and Tutoring are celebrating our move to the Alley. There will
be goodies, music and fun from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5. We're
in the basement of the CUB in the old bowling alley (next to Ground
Zero).
ENMU Bookstore Participating in Ram Band Booster
Discount Card The ENMU Bookstore is a participating
merchant for the Portales High School Ram Band Booster Discount Card.
There are 18 local merchants honoring the card. The card is valid through
Dec. 31, 2003, and can be used repeatedly with most of the participating
merchants. If you don't have your card yet, contact Bobby Brunson (562.4361)
at the Bookstore to purchase one. They are $10 each - all of which goes
to support PHS Ram Band.
Freedom from Smoking Offered at ENMU-Roswell
Are you ready to quit smoking?
"Freedom from Smoking," a program devised by the American
Lung Association, is funded by the Department of Health and ENMU-Roswell.
Free classes are offered at 6:30 p.m. at the Roswell Public Library.
Also, a class on campus will be held at 4 p.m. in LRC 134 Library. Please

Display at Golden Library
The Golden Library will feature a display observing Black History Month
in the Foyer Gallery. The gallery will feature different artifacts and
artwork from different artists, and will run through Feb. 20. The gallery
is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jeremy

Departments Invited to Showcase Themselves
During Science Fair Attention, Academic Departments:
Every year Eastern hosts the Regional Science Fair. This year's fair
is scheduled for Saturday, March 1. Please consider participating in
an open house that will showcase your department. For instance the Science
Department always hosts an open house for the 6th through 12th graders
who bring their science projects to exhibit on that day. We expect about
200 exhibitors, in addition to their parents and teachers, and some
siblings. Many students are coming to a college campus for the first
time, so all departments are encouraged to have a presence on this day.
For example, non-science departments could produce a display with a
scientific theme, or help out with the machinations of Fair Day itself.

Free Lunch for Science Fair Judges
There is such thing as a free lunch. The Science Fair will be
held on Saturday, March 1. Volunteer judges are the most important ingredient
for a successful fair. Students, faculty and staff are invited to serve
as volunteer judges. People who have judged at the fair in the past
say they have enjoyed working with the kids and are glad to judge again.
Judging schedule begins at 8:30 till 11:30, then the free lunch at the
cafeteria. Following lunch, Interviews conclude about 3 p.m. Please

Roosevelt Hall Open House:
Microbiology Research Laboratory Roosevelt Hall, Room
224.
Dr. Manuel Varela and his students conduct research to find ways to
circumvent the problem of antibiotic resistance associated with infectious
diseases. They are also interested in searching for bacterial mutants
that change sugar fermentation properties. Visit the laboratory for
a tour. You are welcome to ask questions.
Miles Mineral Museum Next to the Natural History Museum.
Open 8:00 a.m. till noon.
Minerals, rocks and fossils from New Mexico and around the world are
attractively displayed. Come and see meteorites, gold, diamonds and
the new fluorescent mineral display. Look for minerals from places you've
been. See the special display of common items and the minerals and rocks
used to make them.
Natural History Museum At the main entrance of Roosevelt
Hall. Open 8 a.m. till noon.
See live rattlesnakes, fishes, salamanders, frogs, predatory spiders,
and other fascinating animals. Nearly all of the species displayed can
be found in New Mexico. Wildlife and Fisheries Biology students will
be available to answer your questions.
Freshwater Biology Laboratory Roosevelt Hall, Room 210,
9 a.m. till noon.
Observe freshwater organisms, from microcrustaceans to fishes, and learn
about their behavior and ecology.
Lea Hall (near the Post Office and the Bank)
A zooarchaeological collection of animal bones is on display in Lea
Hall. Dr. Kathy Roler Durand will show visitors how archaeologists use
such collections of animal bones to determine what prehistoric people
were eating. Archaeologists dig up middens (trash mounds) at ancient
sites and then zooarchaeologists, such as Dr. Durand, identify each
bone using a comparative bone collection of known species.
Physics Department, Science Building, Room 205
Stop in to see the Physics demonstration from 9:00 till noon. Dr. William
Andersen will present topics in mechanics and electromagnetism with
demonstrations and some hands-on activities. This is your opportunity
to get personal with angular momentum conservation and electrical power!
Roosevelt County Museum:
Located in a separate building near the Administration Building, the
Roosevelt County Museum welcomes you. When you enter the museum, it's
like traveling back in time. See a 1920s movie projector from the old
Lyric Theatre in Portales and the inaugural ball gown of the governor's
wife in 1950. See remnants of antique technology such as an Edison phonograph
and a printing press from the early 1900s.
Blackwater Draw Museum:
Visit the Blackwater Draw Museum. This archaeological museum tells about
the world-famous discovery of the ancient Clovis People who inhabited
this area and hunted the Mammoth here over 11,000 years ago. Pick up
information about this interesting tour opportunity at the welcome table.
The Blackwater Draw Museum is located a short distance away on US 70,
approximately 8 miles northeast of campus. The trip to the museum by
auto should take about 10 or 15 minutes. Admission is free for Science
Fair participants and their accompanying family members.
'I Have a Dream' Speech Being Played on Video - The Alley Programs
(College Success Program, Multicultural Affairs, and Tutoring) will
be running a videotape of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s " I Have
a Dream Speech" all week (Jan. 21-24) continuously to commemorate
him.

Textbooks Available for Review
New Mexico Public School Reading and Language Textbooks are available
for public review at ENMU. Have you ever-wondered how public school
textbooks are selected for use in the school systems? New Mexico follows
a six-year cycle in adopting textbooks for each subject area for use
in the public schools. Textbooks placed on the official list are available
for local adoption throughout the six-year period.
Teachers, parents, and other community members are invited to review
and comment on the proposed textbooks that have been approved by the
State of New Mexico's Department of Education Instructional Material
Bureau. The new Reading and Modern, Classical, and Native Languages
textbooks are currently available for examination at the Instructional
Resource Center (IRC) located at Eastern New Mexico University's Golden
Library.
The IRC is located on the second floor of Golden Library and is open
on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 7:30
a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from

Student Art Show Set The
Art Department at Eastern New Mexico University will hold a student
art exhibition through Feb. 5 in the Runnels Gallery in the Golden Library.
Admission is free.
Defensive Driving Offered
The Defensive Driving Course will be offered on Feb. 3-4 or Feb. 5-6
in the College of Business, Room 109 beginning at 6 p.m. and ending
at 9 p.m. All university employees or students who will be driving,
or who expect to be driving, a university vehicle will need to take
the class both days (if they have not taken the course before). All
persons wishing to attend this class must pre-register with the University
Police Department at West 3rd & South Avenue K. The class is offered
free to university employees and students. A charge of $10, to cover
the cost of the manual, is required for others who may wish to take
the course.
GED Classes Clovis Community
College offers free GED instructional classes on the ENMU campus in
Room 234 in the Student Academic Services Building (SAS) on Wednesdays
and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. The instructor's name is is Ken Derenzy.

University Police Cell Phone for Routine Calls
The University Police (UP) carry a cell phone on duty between
the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday. This
phone was basically set up so that students and, in some cases, faculty
and staff could contact UP on a non-emergency basis. There are times
when a staff member needs a room or building unlocked that failed to
make it on the list that UP receives from Planning and Analysis. However,
these calls should be for minor situations. For anything of a serious
nature, callers must go through the Portales Police Department. The
Portales dispatcher, when they dispatch these important calls to UP,
are monitored by the City, County and State Police Officers. They, in
turn, respond to assist UP officers regarding any situation that occurs.
At the present time, UP are receiving calls regarding what time McDonalds
and other eating establishments close, etc. These calls can become time
consuming and interfere with what this system was initially set up to
do. The message that UP would like to communicate to everyone is to
contact the University Police Officer directly by calling cell phone
number 760.2945 anytime from 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. Monday through Friday
and all day Saturday and Sunday for routine help. All other calls should
go through the Portales Police Department at 356.4404 ext. 0; this will
contact the caller with the Portales Police dispatcher.
Cafeteria Prices for Faculty/Staff
The faculty/staff prices for meals in the Campus Crossroads (cafeteria)
are as follows: Breakfast - $2.99; Lunch - $3.49; Dinner - $4.99.
Two-Year Course Rotation On-Line
To assist in planning schedules, a two-year rotation listing

Webpage Directory Access
With the inauguration of the new website, units will now have control
over the content, maintenance, and development of certain levels of
their website. ENMU faculty or staff may request directory access for
the unit that they are charged with updating. Send emailed requests
to Webmaster@enmu.edu
with the words "Directory Access Request" in the subject line.
When these requests are received, the Webmaster will contact the area
executive administrator, who must approve all requests for directory
access. Once approval is given, directory access will be set up and
the staff member will receive an email confirmation, with a directory
password. At that point, pages in that directory can be changed or added,
so long as the changes comply with the web policies. Informational workshops
will be offered about how to use webpage templates and comply with web

How to Care for Your Computer and Virus Protection with
Mick Hoffman, either Feb. 25 or April 8, 6-8:30 p.m., UCC-107. The fee
is $30. Please register by Jan. 20 or April 3, respectively.
Tole Painting a six weeks class for ages 15 years through
adult with Janice Lee Wednesdays, Feb. 26-April 9 (no class March 19,
spring break), 6-8 p.m., FCS-99. The fee is $36 with a $5 kit fee payable
to the instructor. Materials include water bowl, paper towels and brushes.

card. Rotation #1 meets Feb. 17-27, rotation #2 meets March 3-13, rotation
#3 meets March 24-April 3 and rotation #4 meets April 7-17. Please register

The Busy Gourmet a one-night, hands-on dinner party with
Jan Hauptmann Tuesday, Feb. 18, FCS-98 with the menu including pork
loin with raspberry chipotle glaze, stuffed chicken breast with pecan
cornbread, three-cheese scalloped potatoes, sweet potato puree with
sherry and white chocolate bread pudding. The fee is $20 with a lab
fee of $7 payable to the instructor.
Paralegal an intensive 84-hour certificate program with
classes held during six consecutive weeks, Tuesday and Thursday evenings

$200) must be ordered one week prior to the beginning class date of

Model Rocketry for 8 years through adult (8-14 years require
parent/guardian) with Bill Moyer, either February 1-22 or April 5-26,
9-11 a.m., COB-123. In each of the four-week classes, three sessions
will consist of lecture and model construction while the fourth session
will be held at the Portales Municipal Airport to launch your model.
All supplies are included in a $20 kit fee payable to the instructor
at the first class. Registration is $20 and be sure to enroll one week
prior so that Bill can order your supplies!
Tax Accounting for Small Businesses with Gene Smith, Tuesdays,

Speedy Cross Stitch beginners only will make a potpourri
heart in one night with Victoria Garrett, Cozy Cottage Cross Stitch

All About Hummingbirds with Dan True, author of Hummingbirds

Saturday Painters' Forum for ages 10 years through adult
(ages 10-15 years require parent/guardian) with Tim McGee scheduled
six Saturdays (Feb. 8, 22, Mar. 8, 29, April 12 and 26), 3-5 p.m., at
different sites for $10 per session or pay only $50 for all six! The
first class will meet in COB-137 and requires pencil and/or charcoal
and newsprint tablet. Additional class sites such as Grulla National
Wildlife Refuge/Oasis State Park will be determined by each prior class.
Using a medium of your choice--watercolor, acrylic or oil, you will
be responsible for your own supplies; but please contact Tim at 562.2065
prior to any first-time purchasing. Any transportation or park fees
