The program is free and open to the public.

Katie Koestner, a renowned sexual assault educator and date-rape survivor who has appeared on the cover of Time magazine, will bring her experience to ENMU in an educational program.

While attending the College of William and Mary in Virginia, Koestner was a victim of sexual assault by a fellow student. She went public with her survival story by speaking to hundreds of thousands of students in high schools, colleges and military schools across North America.

She has also appeared on numerous television shows, including “Larry King Live,” “Oprah Winfrey,” “NBC Nightly News” and “Good Morning America.”

The program is titled “No-Yes.” According to the Campus Outreach Services website, the program “provides students with information about successful sexual communication, responsibility in the use of drugs and alcohol, and respect for self and for peers.” [more]

ENMU Presenting 'Arsenic and Old Lace' in University Theatre on February 13-15
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Eastern New Mexico University is presenting the perfect play for Valentine’s Day. “Arsenic and Old Lace” combines elements of a murder/mystery with a romantic comedy with traditional family values.

Performances are Feb. 13-15 in the University Theatre Center Mainstage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students, $5 for ages 12 and under, $6 for senior citizens and $7 for general admission.

“Arsenic and Old Lace” is a “madcap comedy” written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Daryl Phillipy, assistant professor of theatre. The play opened on Broadway in 1941 and has become extremely popular in performances around the world.

“We chose it for this season because it is lighter fare and reminded people of days ago,” Phillipy said. “People remember the 1944 classic film version with Cary Grant.”

Mortimer Brewster, a play critic who returns home with his fiancé, is played by ENMU student Ryan Cook. His two older aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, are played by ENMU students Ruth Browne and Melanie Maez. The play also fulfills the senior recital for Tara Miller, the set designer.

Advanced tickets are available through the theatre box office on Feb. 5 from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tickets, call 562.2714.

Quote of the Week

"Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the training and guidance you provided me when I was student at Eastern. I was recently selected vice president for Student Services at Albuquerque TVI. It was a national search that lasted six months. The last portion was two open forums followed by an interview with the president. One of the open forums was also videostreamed through our website. As I prepared for the forums and subsequently went through them, I could not help but reflect on the excellent teaching you provided 27 years ago. All of what you showed me back then helped tremendously. Hope you are having a good year. Take Care and Thanks Again! –
Phillip Bustos, AVP for Student Services, Albuquerque, TVI (in a note to Dr. Tony Schroeder)

Former CNN anchor and ENMU graduate Kysa Daniels spoke on "P is for Positive" to a packed Pecos Room in the Campus Union Building on Thursday, Jan. 30. Portales mayor and KENW-TV News/Operations Director Orlando Ortega (right) was instrumental in bringing Kysa back to her alma mater for a day of motivational presentations to students, staff and the public.

ENMU students listen intently to Kysa as she speaks on how to avoid building up astronomical credit card debt. Many were, no doubt, wishing she'd come to campus sooner.

Kysa reacts to a strange question from the Monday Memo editor/photographer as some of Eastern's more distinguished employees also look puzzled by the "What was the biggest surprise you encountered at CNN?" question.
