Aviation Students Train on 737
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) students at ENMU-Roswell took
advantage of a unique training opportunity recently
hands-on training on a Boeing 737-300.
AAR Aircraft Services graciously loane d
the airplane to the AMT program for a 737 familiarization-training course.
Students were able to take the knowledge they gained from printed materials
and training aids to perform systems checks on the actual aircraft.
While students receive hands-on training on various types of real aircraft
and helicopters through the AMT program, this is the first time they
were able to train on a real 737.
"We wish to thank Steve Hall, Richard Duran and the crew involved
with making a 737 available to our students during our 737-familiarization
course," said Jim Primm, Aviation Program director. "The availability
of the aircraft contributed greatly to the course and provided the students
an opportunity to observe an actual aircraft that had been covered in
class. We thank AAR for their continuing support of the AMT program
at ENMU-Roswell. We are most grateful."

Angels Appearing Around Campus
by Colleen Wright
Communication Services
Angels have been appearing
around the campus of Eastern New Mexico U niversity.
These fabric angels are the handiwork of Doncella Caywood, clerk for
Student Records.
Doncella says that she loves crafts, and enjoys everything from angel
figures to crocheting. "My mom loves crafts; she is the one that
taught me to make these angels. Sometimes for Christmas my family would
make a decoration for mother's tree instead of exchanging gifts. I have
very fond memories of those days."
Doncella grew up one of seven children; she has two sisters and four
brothers. With such a large family, they often made gifts instead of
spending money on each other.
She likes to give away her homemade angels. One year she gave them to
some ENMU employees. People admired them and, eventually, Doncella was
asked to teach an Extended Learning class on making angels.
Doncella says that the holidays have always been "a very special
time of year for my family. It's not about presents, but togetherness.
I enjoy working on the angels. It's inexpensive, represents the holidays
and makes a special gift." [more]

Legislative Issues for 2003 Session Revealed
by Danny Earp
Vice President for Business Affairs
New
Funding Formula
The Commission on Higher Education (CHE) is recommending legislative
approval of a new funding formula for the universities and community
colleges. Key elements of the proposed formula that should benefit ENMU
include full funding of extended learning and summer session instruction.
ENMU supports the new formula but is concerned that it be adopted as
proposed by CHE.
Faculty and Staff Compensation
Eastern and all other New Mexico universities continue to lag their
sister institutions in other states in salaries. Presently, ENMU faculty
receive approximately 90 percent of the national average of its peer
institution group. ENMU supports the CHE recommendation of a four (4)
percent salary increase for faculty and staff.
Capital Funding Request
With the successful passage of the 2002 G.O. Bond (for Eastern, $4M
for a new communications building; $1.24M for infrastructure), CHE has
prioritized a new capital projects list for consideration during the
2003 legislative session. The top institutional priority for the state
on the CHE list is $7M to ENMU for a new science center. Ruidoso is
also on the list with $750,000 for expansion of their facility. In addition,
ENMU would receive funds through CHE-recommended appropriations for
instructional technology and campus infrastructure improvements.
135-Mile Rule
The 135-mile issue is somewhat in limbo pending the final report of
the Waiver Task Force. The Task Force is producing a strong argument
that the Texas Waiver is in the best interest of New Mexico. The key
to this assertion is an economic impact statement that demonstrates
the positive result of Texas students' expenditures in our state. The
report was reviewed and validated by the UNM Bureau of Business and
Economic Research.
ENMU-Roswell
to Hold Video Relay System Open House
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
The public is invited to experience an innovative communication system
for the hearing-impaired. Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell has
been selected as one of seven pilot sites in the state to house a new
Video Relay System for the hearing impaired.
In cooperation with Relay New Mexico, the system is free and available
for use by the public. Interested residents can see the system in action
during an open house hosted by New Mexico Video Relay Services on Wednesday,
Jan.15, from 4-7 p.m. The video relay site is in Room 112 of the Learning
Resource Center on the Roswell campus.
Utilizing a computer with a camera and an online interpreter, the relay
system allows users to communicate in real time. The system replaces
the old TDD machines where messages are typed in and transmitted via
a telephone line to a similar machine on the other end.

ENMU Track Under Construction for New Teams
(Expected to be Available for Public Use by Late Spring)
by Robert McKinney
Sports Information Director
Eastern New Mexico University is currently refurbishing its track for
the return of mens and womens track and field, which will
start competing during the Spring 2003 semester. The track will not
be ready for the 2003 collegiate track and field season, but should
be ready for the public to use for walking and jogging by late spring.
ENMU has arranged with Portales High School to use their track facility
until Easterns track is renovated. The new track will be converted
from 440 yards to 400 meters. The Eurotan SG Polyurethane Surface being
installed requires consistently warm weather to solidify. It is the
primary reason the track will not be completed during the competitive
season.
When the refurbished track is finished, it will be available for members
of the campus community as well as local residents for personal exercise.
ENMU is requesting that wheeled devices not be used on the track, since
they could damage the surface.
According to Lewis Reeves, director of the ENMU Physical Plant, the
track will include field event facilities, such as a pole vault pit,
high jump area and runways for the long jump and the triple jump. There
also will be shot put and discus areas. To reduce the possibility of
accidental spearings, the javelin-throwing area will be located outside
the oval track.
According to Lewis, the main contractor for the project is Southwest
Recreational of Albuquerque, N.M. The sub-contractor is Ramirez and
Sons Paving of Clovis, N.M.

Quote of the Week
"It's about 13 degrees
right now with chances of getting colder. It has been a nice calm winter
this year; it hasn't dropped below zero yet! We only have about 8-9
inches of snow and that is not enough insulation for water pipes, etc.,
when it dips to 40 below zero. People are begining to worry
about pipes freezing and busting." Bobby Trujillo (former
