ENMU Signs Exclusive
Beverage Vending Contract with 'The Real Thing'
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
Eastern New Mexico University has signed an eight-year agreement
with Coca-Cola Bottling of Clovis to become the exclusive beverage vendor
on campus, according to Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president. "Coca-Cola
of Clovis is known for wanting to help educational institutions in this
area," said Dr. Gamble. "We are especially pleased at the
way this partnership will benefit students."
Eastern will receive $80,000 per year in unrestricted funds. According
to Danny Earp, vice president for Business Affairs, approximately $25,000
of that will be dedicated each year to athletics.
"Coca-Cola is proud to partner with ENMU," said Mike Metcalf,
Sales Center manager for Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Clovis. "This
partnership
allows us to give back to the University in a meaningful way and to
stay close to our community."

As part of the contract, Southwest Canners of Portales will donate $10,000
each year to the Friends of Eastern Foundation for the new Foundation
Flagship Stellar Membership.
(L-R)
Southwest Canners Plant Manager Bob Workman and Chief Financial Officer
Rick Hauptmann presented Friends of Eastern Foundation Board President
Steve Doerr and Executive Director Noelle Bartl a $10,000 check for
the new Foundation Flagship Stellar Membership. In return, the Foundation
presented Southwest Canners a plaque honoring their Flagship membership.
So far, Foundation Flagship business contributions in 2002-2003 will
support $45,000 for ENMU Starter Scholarships to incoming freshmen.

All beverage vending machines on campus have already been converted
to Coca-Cola products. Coca-Cola will also have exclusive vending rights
in campus dining facilities and at athletic events.
Products to be vended will include such beverages as Coca-Cola Classic,
Diet Coke, Sprite, Dasani Water, Powerade as well as other juices, isotonics
and carbonated soft drinks.
The agreement is retroactive to July 28, 2002, according to Mr. Earp.

Noelle Bartl and Danny Earp tried to deposit the checks from Southwest
Canners and Coca-Cola at the ENMU cashiers' window. However, try as
they might, the checks wouldn't fit. Although cashier Jana Small suggested
a good soaking, Danny, with years of experience, wisely pointed out
that soaking would only make them tender not legal.

Freshman Broadcasting Major from Amarillo Enjoys ENMU's 'Cozy' Atmosphere
by Colleen Wright
Communication Services

Those who have watched Eastern New Mexico University's Scene 3 News
on KENW-TV, Eastern's public broadcasting station, may be familiar with
the face of weatherwoman Kimberly Hanna.
The freshman says that she chose ENMU because it was close to her hometown
of Amarillo, but far enough away for her to live on her own. What appealed
to her was Eastern's "cozy" atmosphere.
"I applied to many colleges, but the minute I visited Eastern it
was obvious this is where I belonged," Kimberly says. "I love
the small-college atmosphere; the college is like a small city within
a little town."

Hosted Video Relay System Open House
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
The public experienced an innovative communication system for the hearing-impaired
at a video relay open house at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell.
ENMU-R was selected as one of seven pilot sites in the state to house
a new Video Relay System for the hearing impaired.
In cooperation with Relay New Mexico, the system is free and available
for use by the public. Interested residents saw the system in action
during an open house hosted by New Mexico Video Relay Services on Wednesday,
Jan.15. The video relay site is in Room 112 of the Learning Resource
Center on the Roswell campus.
Utilizing a computer with a camera and an online interpreter, the relay
system allows users to communicate in real time. The system replaces
the old TDD machines where messages are typed in and transmitted via
a telephone line to a similar machine on the other end.

AEOP elected new officers at their Jan. 14 meeting.
Sherrye Burleson provided the installation program with a music theme.

and scholarships.
The next meeting will be on Feb. 11.
New AEOP officers are: (right to left): Alma Lyle
Bilberry, "party prez"; Betsy Chavez, vice prez (who admitted
disappointment after learning her position had nothing to do with vice);
Mandi Park, secretary (who was bummed upon learning her new position
was not a promotion from her job in Extended Learning); Bonnie Sink,
treasurer and in emergencies money-launderer for AEOP's
$10 yearly dues (as well as linguist consultant for the proper use of
"inter-campus" vs. "intra-campus" envelopes); and

Legislative Issues for 2003 Session Revealed
by Danny Earp
Vice President for Business Affairs
New
Funding Formula
The Commission on Higher Education (CHE) is recommending legislative
approval of a new funding formula for the universities and community
colleges. Key elements of the proposed formula that should benefit ENMU
include full funding of extended learning and summer session instruction.
ENMU supports the new formula but is concerned that it be adopted as
proposed by CHE.
Faculty and Staff Compensation
Eastern and all other New Mexico universities continue to lag their
sister institutions in other states in salaries. Presently, ENMU faculty
receive approximately 90 percent of the national average of its peer
institution group. ENMU supports the CHE recommendation of a four (4)
percent salary increase for faculty and staff.
Capital Funding Request
With the successful passage of the 2002 G.O. Bond (for Eastern, $4M
for a new communications building; $1.24M for infrastructure), CHE has
prioritized a new capital projects list for consideration during the
2003 legislative session. The top institutional priority for the state
on the CHE list is $7M to ENMU for a new science center. Ruidoso is
also on the list with $750,000 for expansion of their facility. In addition,
ENMU would receive funds through CHE-recommended appropriations for
instructional technology and campus infrastructure improvements.
135-Mile Rule
The 135-mile issue is somewhat in limbo pending the final report of
the Waiver Task Force. The Task Force is producing a strong argument
that the Texas Waiver is in the best interest of New Mexico. The key
to this assertion is an economic impact statement that demonstrates
the positive result of Texas students' expenditures in our state. The
report was reviewed and validated by the UNM Bureau of Business and
Economic Research.

Only
Two Knew
 |
After
hearing complaints that
the previous "Mystery Employee" photo contests were "too
easy," the Monday Memo granted readers their
wish by running the above photo last week. Only two people answered
correctly (by the deadline) and qualified for the drawing for a
gift certificate from the ENMU Campus Bookstore.
Some of the incorrect guesses were:
"Could it be the lovely Betty Crane???"
"Alisa Giulietti"
"Lilah Gainey"
"Minnie Navarro"
"Is it that beautiful Ms. JoAnn Hays???"
"Janice Cowen"
"Sherri
Burleson"
"This is definitely a toughie! Hmmm... My guess is Sherri Johnston."
"Karen Leonhardt?"
"Yes, this is a tough one. My guess is Wanda Graham."

And
the Mystery Employee Is...

| Sigrid
Jonsson The executive
secretary for Academic Affairs was one of those who complained about
the contests being too easy, so we told her to put her photo where
her complaint was. She took us up on our offer in amazing fashion.
Here, she draws the name of the winner (from the Monday Memo
editor's new maroon hat which replaced the traditional large pistachio
jar damaged in a mysterious night-time accident) from the only two
correct guesses. |
And
the Winner Is...

Lois
Nichols The retired
ENMU employee said that she used some detective work to guess
the identity of the "Mystery Employee." Lois had a photo
of Sigrid from when she attended Lois' farewell party, and she
compared facial features. For her bone-structure sleuthing work,
Lois was presented with a gift certificate to the Campus Bookstore
by manager Jessie Luna. The other correct response was from retired
ENMU employee Nancy Miller. Olympia Chino also guessed correctly,
but her entry arrived after the deadline when the secret drawing
had already been conducted in a secret room in the back of the
Monday Memo offices.
