Extended Learning Offering Course in Model Rocketryby
Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
People interested in rockets will soon have a chance to indulge their
passion by actually building and shooting a rocket.
Extended Learning at Eastern New Mexico University is offering Model
Rocketry, an introduction to the hobby taught by experienced model rocketeer
Bill Moyer.
Mr. Moyer, who works in the Floyd school system, has been flying model
rockets since 1966. He is certified by the National Association of Rocketry
and has built exceptionally large rockets in the past three years.
It is his first time to teach such a class. In this course, he will
provide information about model rocketry and explain the rules and regulations.
The class will finish with a launching session at the Portales Municipal
Airport.
Aside from entertainment, model rocketry can help in agricultural settings,
such as eastern New Mexico.
Rockets could help by using infrared photography from the rocket,
which could locate insect patterns for farmers, Mr. Moyer said.
He added that the rockets could also be used for such things as weather
research and engineering packages. [more]

Texas Tech Professor Judging ENMU Student Exhibition
The 2003 Eastern New Mexico University Student Juried Exhibition will
be open for public viewing in the Runnels Gallery in the Golden Library
through Wednesday, Feb. 5.
The student juried exhibition is an annual spring event open to all
students enrolled in Eastern New Mexico University. A call for entries,
which was released in fall 2002, attracted more than 50 entries
of which 28 were accepted by a faculty committee of the Department of
Art.
The exhibition will be judged by Professor Carla Tedeschi of the School
of Art at Texas Tech University. According to Dr. Haig David-West, chair
of ENMU's Department of Art, "It is the usual practice to invite
external experts to adjudicate such exhibitions, and Professor Tedeschi
was invited in recognition of her significant presence in art and design
education." [more]
ENMU Students Express Opinions About Possible War with
Iraqby Shane Brown
Communication Services
With
the possibility of war with Iraq looming daily, students at Eastern
New Mexico University bring the subject up frequently. The atmosphere
is very diverse and opinions vary from total support to caution.
Carlos Brugh, a junior business administration and public relations
major from Albuquerque, favored war at first, but then had second thoughts.
Go for it George, Carlos said, but then reconsidered. Why?
So we can try to end the threat, but at the same time that threat wont
end, it will always be there. Carlos added that the only reason
we should go to war is if Iraq is a clear and present threat to the
United States. [more]
Departments Invited to Showcase Themselves During Science Fair
at ENMU
Attention, Academic Departments: Every year Eastern hosts the Regional
Science Fair. This year's fair is scheduled for Saturday, March 1. Please
consider participating in an open house that will showcase your department.
For instance, the Science Department always hosts an open house for
the 6th through 12th graders who bring their science projects to exhibit
on that day. About 200 exhibitors, in addition to parents, teachers
and siblings, are expected.
Many students are coming to a college campus for the first time, so
all departments are encouraged to have a presence on this day. For example,
non-science departments could produce a display with a scientific theme,
or help out with the machinations of Fair Day itself.
To give you an idea of the possibilities, e-mail
rosemary.mathews@enmu.edu or robert.mctaggart@enmu.edu.
