ENMU Human Resource Team Wins State Championship
Eastern New Mexico University’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently won the New Mexico SHRM competition, held at Mountain View Medical Center in Las Cruces.human resource team

In only their second year of competition, the ENMU team – (L-R) Jim Carrigan, Sara Henry and David Rodriguez, with Dr. Lee Weyant – tested their knowledge of human resource management issues against other student chapters from across New Mexico.

Dr. Lee Weyant, advisor for the ENMU team, said, “I’m very proud of their accomplishments. This level of competition shows that ENMU has a strong undergraduate program in Human Resource Management.”

The ENMU team will now compete in the regional competition on April 4-5 in Albuquerque, N.M. The regional competition includes schools from California, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii and Colorado. “Regionals will truly be a different level of competition. We will be matched against schools with a history of strong undergraduate human resource programs,” said Dr. Weyant.

The HR Game Competition was designed as a friendly competition to prepare students for the Professional Human Resource (PHR) certification exam. This is one of two levels of certification for HR professionals recognized by SHRM.

ENMU SHRM is affiliated with the Southeastern New Mexico Human Resource Association (SENMHRA). For more information about ENMU SHRM, contact Dr. Weyant at 505.562.5352, or Lee.weyant@enmu.edu. Information about SENMHRA is available at www.senmhra.org.

On Tuesday, April 1 “The Advance Warning Tour” will rock the Ballroom at Eastern New Mexico University. The doors open at 7 p.m., the show starts at 7:30 and ends around 11:30. The free show is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ballroom has a capacity of 1,000.

ravonettes“The Advance Warning Tour,” sponsored by MTV2, Nokia and CMJ, features the bands “The Mooney Suzuki,” “Longwave,” “White Light Motorcade” and, most notably, “The Raveonettes.”

The Raveonettes have recently appeared on the Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien shows, as well as being featured in Rolling Stone. The magazine said, “Extremely self-confident Danish duo that makes serrated garage-rock candy combining the classic twang of rockabilly with blasts of fuzz-pedal fury."

“The Advance Warning Tour coming to ENMU is a by-product of us hosting the Lifehouse concert; the concert industry talks and now we’re on the board as a place to perform at,” said Will Kayatin, director of Student Activities and Organizations at ENMU. He added that talent companies actually call because of the success of the Lifehouse concert.

The Advance Warning Tour is usually a $100,000 show, but ENMU is only responsible for the production cost. “We handle production, space, marketing and being a host,” Will said. "The tour actually called us about bringing the show to Eastern.

“Activities offices usually don’t host major shows like this, so this is a rare opportunity for students and others to see some groups that are on the verge of making it big,” Will said.

by Colleen Wright
Communication Services

An instructor who has instructed over 1,000 divers will teach a scuba class for Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Extended Learning.

The class will consist of two weekends of classroom and pool instruction. The last weekend the class will take a trip to the open pool site at Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, N.M. Mike Hale of Scuba Ventures in Liberal, Kan., will instruct the class.

Mr. Hale has trained over 1,000 divers. He says that he began diving in the early 70's, but was not certified. "In those days if you had your own scuba equipment, no one cared if you were certified. Three years later Mr. Hall became a PADI instructor, and then went on to own his own scuba store. In 1994 he and his wife, Kathy, became full-time scuba instructors. In 1998 their son, Justin, also became an instructor.

"A nice thing about my job is it has enabled me to travel to a lot of neat places," he says. "I guess I am just one of those lucky people that is doing exactly what he wants to do."

Though scuba diving is Mr. Hall's favorite passion, he also enjoys horseback riding, snow and water skiing.

"One day Kathy and I hope to move to the Caribbean," he says. "We would still do the same job."

The Extended Learning course will cost $200, an open water feel of $80, suit rental of $10 per day, a park fee of $8 and a book for $38. Students must register by April 1. For more information, contact Extended Learning at 505.562.2165.
