Piano Professor Says Notes Reflect Artist's
Emotional Journey
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services
PORTALES Dr. John Olsen says that note-perfect musicians
can give bad performances, while the less technically-proficient can
be awe-inspiring. An artists life is reflected in the emotion
of their playing, says the Eastern New Mexico University music
professor. Notes are just tools which reflect and express these
experiences.
Johns music career began in
1953 with a vivacious Russian woman in a huge Plymouth pulling up beside
the six-year-old on a New Jersey street and, with dramatic flourishing
motions, waving him over. [more]

ENMU Gets Ready to Celebrate 75
with Annual Williamson Lectureship on March 6
by Dr. Patrice Caldwell
Executive Director of Planning and Analysis/Institutional Renewal, Associate
English Professor
Marking his seventy-five years of publishing science fiction, Eastern
New Mexico University invites the campus
and community to celebrate the career of Dr. Jack Williamson, author,
educator, and Grand Master of science fiction, on Thursday, March 6
at the Universitys 27th annual Williamson Lectureship.
The festivities begin at a noontime lunch at the Campus Union Ballroom,
where Lectureship guests Connie Willis and Joe Haldeman will share appreciations
of Williamsons work and career. Williamsons comments, always
a highlight, prepare the audience for extended comments that evening
at the Lectureship panel at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall in ENMUs Music
Building. Admission is free.
Books by the authors will be on sale at both luncheon and lectureship.
To reserve a place for lunch (cost $7 payable at the door) call 505.562.2315.
Joining Williamson for this celebration are fellow Hugo- and Nebula-decorated
writers Connie Willis and Joe Haldeman. Williss wit and humor
make her a favorite speaker on the science fiction convention circuit.
Her work ranges from her playful investigation of Roswell, Vegas,
and Area 51 to her eloquent tribute to Williamson, Non-Stop
to Portales. Her novels, including Lincolns Dream,
Doomsday Book, Remake, Bellweather, To Say Nothing
of the Dog, and Passage, are justly celebrated for their
cleverness and touching insights.
Professor of writing at MIT, author and poet, Joe Haldeman sets the
standard for thoughtful and entertaining science fiction. Beginning
with his much-honored Forever War, Haldeman has produced superb
novels, short stories, and poetry that take readers from Vietnam to
the ends of the galaxy and far reaches of time. Combining a literary
sensibility with a gritty realism, his novels, including Hemingway
Hoax, 1968, Tool of the Trade, Forever Free,
and most recently, Guardian set a standard in the field that few writers
even approach.
Plan to join Eastern in Celebrating 75 and honoring Jack
Williamson this Thursday, March 6, at Eastern New Mexico University.
For information or luncheon reservations, call 505.562.2315.

Music Department Presenting 'Dido and 'Aeneas'
on March 7-8
by Dr. David Duke
Assistant Professor of Music
The Eastern New Mexico University Department of Music will present Henry
Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" on March 7-8 at 7 p.m. in Buchanan
Hall in the Music Building. Classic Greek Drama meets English Baroque
opera in this heart-rending tale of love, betrayal and the destructive
forces of fate.
The production is under the direction of Dr. David W. Duke, assistant
professor of voice, who will also conduct a chamber ensemble, consisting
of a string quartet and keyboard.
"This is one of the finest operas ever written in the English language,"
says Duke. "We have several students who will be graduating, and
this is a perfect vehicle to show off their talents, as well as some
of our up and coming students. It is only an hour long, so it fits,
both in size and scope, the abilities of the performers and the facilities
available. This is really a chamber opera, which fits in nicely in a
small venue such as Buchanan Hall." [more]

Chemistry Professor Gets Second Chance with
Boy Scout
Opportunity He Missed During Rural West Texas Childhood
by Colleen Wright
Communication Services
During his West Texas childhood, Dr. Newton Hilliard always wanted to
be in the Boy Scouts, but the 28 miles to the nearest town made this
impossible. Now as an adult, the chance has presented itself.
The chemistry professor at Eastern New Mexico University
has become an avid supporter of the association, especially the opportunities
it offers people of all ages.
"When I was young all of my friends got to be part of the Boy Scouts;
I always wanted to be in a troop but we lived too far out of town,"
Dr. Dr. Hilliard explained. Now he contributes many hours to the group.
His two sons, Chris and Jeremy, are actively involved in Scouts and
his daughter, Kimberly, is part of the Girl Scouts. His wife is also
planning on taking an active role. [more]

Presenting Fifth Annual Diversity Festival
by Britt Hochhausler
Communication Services
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Eastern New Mexico University
will present the fifth annual Diversity Festival on March 6-8 at 8 p.m.
and Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the University Theatre
Center.
The Diversity Festival was started to celebrate social and political
differences, race, religion and sexual orientation.
The initial mission for the Festival was to celebrate the diversity
of humanity, said Daryl Phillipy, faculty co-advisor for the Festival.
Originally, the Festival chose to perform short one-acts that dealt
with diversity issues. In the past few years, the department asked for
original play submissions. This year, all plays are written by the Workshop
in Playwriting class taught by Janiece Scarbrough, the other Festival
faculty co-advisor.
Claire Rice, senior theater performance major from Albuquerque, has
written a 45-minute one-act play, Once a Boy, as part of
her bachelor of fine arts degree requirement. The play is about a Cambodian
man living in the United States who was a child soldier under the Pol
Pot regime. It is directed by Felipe Macias.
Tickets for the Diversity Festival are $3 per person.
For more information, call Mr. Phillipy at 505.562.2092, or Ms. Scarbrough
at 505.562.2476.

New ENMU Ring Being Unveiled
at Bookstore on March 11
by Colleen Wright
Communication Services
This year Eastern New Mexico University is presenting the school's first
official class ring.
The shoulders of the ring feature the fountain at the heart of the campus
that represents a strong sense of community among students. The words
of the school fight song, O hail ENMU to you, communicate
a sense of respect and esteem for the alma mater, according to Janice
Cowen, director of Alumni Affairs.
As the youngest state university in New Mexico, Eastern looks with pride
upon its accomplishments since the dream of having a university in eastern
New Mexico first arose many decades ago, notes Janice. The Administration
Building reflects Eastern's rich heritage since its 1934 founding. In
addition, the words Green and Silver, Loyal and True are
cast inside the ring "a constant reminder that to our school
we will always remain loyal and true and the green and silver colors
will reign forever," says Janice.
The University's first official rings will be on display from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. at the Campus Bookstore on Tuesday, March 11. All ENMU students
that have over 60 credit hours are invited to purchase the ring. This
is the only time this school year that the official Eastern New Mexico
University class ring will be available. Rings will be presented at
a special class ring presentation ceremony on April 25 in the Becky
Sharp Auditorium in the College of Business.
For more information, call the Alumni Office at 505.562.2125.
