ENMU Recognizing
Producers of Dual-Language Documentary The public
is invited to the Portales-area premier of the "Planting Seeds
of Success Through Language" documentary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 12, in the University Theatre at Eastern. The half-hour program,
produced by KENW-TVs Orlando Ortega, highlights a Spanish/English
Two-Way, Dual-Language Immersion Program that has been in place
at Dolores Gonzales Elementary School in Albuquerque for eight years.
The program begins with kindergarten and continues through the fifth
grade. Students with English as their first language, students with
Spanish as their first language, and heritage language learners
(non-Spanish speaking Hispanics) are grouped together in the classroom.
During half of the day, the students are immersed in English-only
instruction and during the other half, they are immersed in Spanish-only
instruction. Following introductions by Dr. Steven Russell, dean
of the College of Education and Technology at ENMU, ENMU president
Steven Gamble will welcome guests. The documentary will then be
screened, followed by comments from David Briseño, director
of Federal Programs at La Casita. Students in the dual-language
program at Las Casita will also be in attendance. Duane Ryan, director
of Broadcasting at KENW, will then make comments, followed by Dr.
López-Emslie. A reception will follow in the lobby.

Building Window replacement in the Administration
Building will tentatively begin on Monday, Nov. 10. The contractors
will start in the southeast corner and work in a counter clockwise
fashion around the building. It is assumed that both the upstairs

Bond Issue Passes
for ENMU-Roswell Chaves County voters overwhelmingly
passed the local general obligation bond issue referendum for ENMU-Roswell
on Nov. 4. In absentee voting, the final count was 729 for the bond
issue and 178 against. In each of the 19 voting districts, the votes
for the bond issue also far outnumbered the votes against, with
the final total coming in at 3,958 for the bond issue and 761 against.
Although only about 16 percent of county voters went to the polls,
their support of ENMU-Roswell was decisive with close to 84 percent
voting for the bond issue. That support means the existing property
tax bond levy for the University will continue, with the campus
receiving up to $8.1 million over the next 11 years. The bond issue
victory was the outcome of the 'Vision 20/20: Focus on the Future'
campaign, which was coordinated by a group of community members
over the past several months. J. Phelps White III served as chair.
