Surviving Columbus Video
– On Monday, Oct. 13, Columbus Day Observance, the Native-American Affairs Office will show a video, "Surviving Columbus." Showtimes will be at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Ground Zero.

Brin Polycom Teleconferencing Available
– The Department of Science has placed the Brin Polycom in Library 141 for use by faculty and staff. Please contact Ellen Gardiner at X2259 for more information or to schedule a conference.

GEAR UP Offering Leadership Retreat
– GEAR UP will offer the 2nd Leadership Retreat for Portales High School 10th and 11th graders. ENMU students who will be attending as facilitators on Oct. 13-15 are: Kyla Elliott, Regina Montoya, Richard Parson, Noemi Perez and Kayla Stevens.


Correction on Authorized Absence
– The authorized absence form that was submitted for the football game in Tahlequah, Okla., game had an incorrect date for the departure. The date submitted was 9/15/03 and it should have been 9/19/03.


Small Intra-Campus Envelopes Requested – Career Services has requested that any departments with extra intra-campus (small) envelopes send them to them at Station 34.

Nursing CDs Available – A number of Educational Nursing CDs have arrived for the New Mexico Educational Software Clearinghouse. These include: Nursing Assessment of the New Family: a) Physical Assessment of the Newborn; b) Gestational Age Assessment of the Newborn; c) Nursing Assessment of the Postpartum Patient. Infection Prevention: a) Breaking the Chain of Infection; b) Hand Hygiene and Gloving; c) Basic Sterile Technique. Human Resource Manager Presentation Open to Everyone – The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will have an interactive presentation by Donna Smith, PHR, Human Resources director for ENMR Plateau, on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the COB Room 103. The presentation will be over by 8 p.m. Ms. Smith will challenge you to examine the skills and decision-making abilities required to be an effective HR manager. She will talk about various paths into the field, and how to get the experience necessary to advance in your career. This is open for all majors, not just Human Resource Management.

Ms. Smith graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor's of business of administration degree and from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a master's degree in aeronautical science (specializing in aviation management). Ms. Smith has been the director of Employee Services with ENMR Plateau Telecommunications in Clovis for eight years. She is responsible for all aspects of human resources, including recruiting and personnel, training, benefits administration, compensation and HR information management for a 250+ employee corporation.

Lifelong Wellness to Present Stretching Exercises
– Lifelong Wellness will present stretching workshops: Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:45 a.m. in Room 11 in Greyhound Arena; Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12:45 p.m. in Gym 87; Thursday, Oct. 16 at 5:45 p.m. in the MaxPAC; and Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12:40 p.m. in the Aztec Room in the Campus Union. Any ENMU employee is welcome to attend.

Important Fringe Benefit Information
The New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority is offering the following switch enrollment opportunities. Premium changes for these adjustments will be made with the December payroll deductions for coverage changes effective Jan. 1, 2004.
 
Health Insurance Switch Enrollment
Employees who are currently participating in one of the three ENMU health insurance plans now have the opportunity to "switch" their enrollment between the plans. The three health plans offered are Blue Cross/Blue Shield Point of Service, Cigna Point of Service, and Cimarron HMO. Employees interested in "switching" health insurance carriers should complete a change form in the Payroll Office, Admin. 117, by Nov. 15, 2003.
 
Dental Insurance Switch Enrollment
Employees who are participating in an ENMU United Concordia dental insurance plan now have the opportunity to "switch" their enrollment between the high and low options. Employees interested in "switching" dental insurance plans should complete a change form in the Payroll Office, Admin. 117, by Nov. 15, 2003.

Fall POPS Approaches
The University Friends of Music and the Department of Music proudly announce the 36th annual POPS Dinner Concert on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. A performance of the University Wind Symphony and a superb dinner will welcome the fall season is a very special way. Tickets are $25 per person, available by mail order only. Special seating preferences will be extended to members of the Friends of Music. This event supports scholarships for talented music students. El Portal Winners AnnouncedThe spring 2003 issue of El Portal is now available. First place winners in the spring 2003 issue were Sarah Boyts, art, Elizabeth Ann Galligan, poetry, and Melissa Jones Witt, fiction. Honorable mention awards went to Jennifer Buntz (fiction) and Leslie Riggins (poetry). Featured authors in the issue include Holly Atwood, Leah Berry, Robin Bennett, LaShawn Byrd, Shannara Green, Laura Holder, Bob Huber, Marilyn Huber, Ruven Ortiz, M. Lynette Palma, Nicole Phinney, and Sarah Wheeler. The faculty sponsor of this issue was Ms. Jane Thompson; the student editor was Natalie Solomon, assisted by Matthew Yoder and Ann Dennis, judges. – Golden Library offers new online resources including Choice Online for academic book reviews, Dictionary of Literary Biography for the most influential literary figures, and HealthSource:Nursing/Academic edition for health news updated daily. – The Golden Library invites you to visit the new electronic resources page at http://www.enmu.edu/academics/library/periodical-databases/index.shtml. New items on the page include an alphabetical listing of the online periodical indexes, a listing of databases by subjects, and a listing of full-text journals (online). We hope you find the page user-friendly.

Radio Station Needs Volunteers for Pledge Drive – It's that time of year again! The Fall pledge drive for public radio station, KENW/KMTH-FM is scheduled for Oct. 18-25. 'Cowboy Boss' Luncheon Set for Oct. 14 – Ya'll come whether you're the boss or not. The event is sponsored by the Association of Educational Office Professionals, and is set on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Tickets for the Chuck Wagon are $5 per person. The contact is Kathie Brunson, ext. 2200. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Oct. 7. The menu includes: Barbeque Brisket or Chicken, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Cowboy Biscuits, Peach Cobbler, Tea, Coffee or Water. Dress is "cattle drive casual." Entertainment will be by Billy Cathy and his Cowboy Ropes, and Blue Grass Music by The Howards. There will also be door prizes.

Partners Training Program – Counseling and Career Services will start conducting the Partners Training Program. If you have any questions, please call Shirley at 562.2211. The Partners training program is approximately two hours in length complete with video and handouts. The program includes topics such as: Advantages of Working on Campus, Active Listening, Learn Good Telephone Techniques, Going the Extra Mile, Asking Questions, Handling Difficult Situations, Confidentiality, Student Employment Contracts and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Note: All student employees are required to only attend one two-hour Partners Training Program session while attending Eastern. The Training Program will be held in SAS Room 214.

Following is a schedule of the date and times:

Oct. 13-30, Mondays and Wednesdays 1-3 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 9-11 a.m.

Students will need to stop by SAS 214 or call 562.2211 to sign up for a session. Please inform your student employees that each session is limited to 20 students.

AA Meetings – The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous is sponsoring two weekly meetings on Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation, 1417 S. Ave. K. Portales residents and members of the University community who are concerned about their own or others' alcohol and drug abuse issues are invited to attend. It is an open meeting.

Defensive Driving Renewal Required Every Four Years – Renewal of defensive driving is required every four years. For "faculty and staff" that is in need to be recertified for defensive driving we have approximately two years to have this recertification completed. It does not have to be completed this year. We have ample time to have everyone including first-time students, faculty and staff to complete this training. The University Police Department is in the process of providing schedules to try to meet everyone's needs. These will include some day-time classes, along with some night-time class and if need be then we will have some classes on Saturday.

For personnel that need to renew their defensive driving, which is a four-hour class, those dates are Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and Oct. 28 from 1-5 p.m. Everyone needs to sign up at the University Police Department to get their material for the course.

Swimming – With Kristy Jones and additional Red Cross Lifeguards will be held at the Natatorium for ages 4 years and up in four 8-day rotations, Mondays-Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m. The fee is $40 and includes a Red Cross Certification Card for the level passed. Rotation #1 is Sept. 8-18, #2 is Sept. 29-Oct. 9, #3 is Oct. 20-30 and #4 is Nov. 10-20. Please register by Friday noon prior to each rotation. Parental consent is required.
