Fall POPS Concert Set for November 1The University Friends of Music and the Department of Music proudly announce the 36th annual POPS Dinner Concert on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. A performance of the University Wind Symphony and a superb dinner will welcome the fall season in a very special way.

The "POPS" concert at Eastern is modeled on the popular Boston "POPS" concerts, which made famous the formula of mixing traditional, classic musical compositions with more popular musical selections. This year, the University Wind Symphony, 45 talented music students, will perform a diverse selection of pieces, including a selection of songs from World War II, some traditional patriotic favorites, a lively selection of movie hits, including the musical theme from Star Wars, and a fun collection of themes from popular television "sitcoms." In addition, the Wind Symphony will also perform some classical pieces that showcase their musical talent.

Tickets are $25 each and are sold by mail only. Mail ticket orders by Oct. 28 to POPS Dinner Concert, P.O. Box 195, Clovis, NM 88101, with
checks payable to University Friends of Music. Special seating preferences will be extended to members of the Friends of Music. This event supports scholarships for talented music students.

For more information, contact the Department of Music at 505.562.2377, Nancye Gressett at 505.762.0619, or Patrice Caldwell at 505.356.6591 or e-mail Patrice.Caldwell@enmu.edu.

Student Choreographed Dance Concert Set for October 29 Through November 1 – Eastern will present the Student Choreographed Dance Concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Nov. 1 in the Studio Theatre. Day of the Dead Celebration Set for Friday, October 31 – Eastern New Mexico University's Hispanic Affairs is hosting a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Friday, Oct. 31 from 12-2 p.m. in the Campus Union Building Ballroom. The public is invited. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration from Mexico and Central America. In this celebration friends and families get together to remember their late loved ones. Making an altares (altar) is very meaningful for the remembrance of an individual. It reflects their life with pictures, music, candles, flowers, baked goods and other memories. There will be a special remembrance for deceased ENMU students: Maj. Ronald Milam, Rayla Parra and Roland "Rojo" Ellsworth. Patricio Trujillo, an art performer from Albuquerque, will be the guest speaker. He will discuss the history of Dia de los Muertos, and why the Hispanic culture celebrates this holiday. There will also be an "Altar Contest" in which the public, including schools and organizations, can participate by building altars and presenting them at the celebration. Hispanic traditional snacks, Bizcochitos, a cinnamon cookie, and atole, a warm drink, will be served. For more information, contact Hispanic Affairs at 505.562.2451. (written by Daniel Lucero)

Defensive Driving Renewal Required Every Four Years – Renewal of defensive driving is required every four years. For "faculty and staff" that is in need to be recertified for defensive driving we have approximately two years to have this recertification completed. It does not have to be completed this year. We have ample time to have everyone including first-time students, faculty and staff to complete this training. The University Police Department is in the process of providing schedules to try to meet everyone's needs. These will include some day-time classes, along with some night-time class and if need be then we will have some classes on Saturday.

For personnel that need to renew their defensive driving, which is a four-hour class, the next date is Oct. 28 from 1-5 p.m. Everyone needs to sign up at the University Police Department to get their material for the course.
