Important Fringe Benefit Information
The New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority is offering the following switch enrollment opportunities. Premium changes for these adjustments will be made with the December payroll deductions for coverage changes effective Jan. 1, 2004.
 
Health Insurance Switch Enrollment
Employees who are currently participating in one of the three ENMU health insurance plans now have the opportunity to "switch" their enrollment between the plans. The three health plans offered are Blue Cross/Blue Shield Point of Service, Cigna Point of Service, and Cimarron HMO. Employees interested in "switching" health insurance carriers should complete a change form in the Payroll Office, Admin. 117, by Nov. 15, 2003.
 
Dental Insurance Switch Enrollment
Employees who are participating in an ENMU United Concordia dental insurance plan now have the opportunity to "switch" their enrollment between the high and low options. Employees interested in "switching" dental insurance plans should complete a change form in the Payroll Office, Admin. 117, by Nov. 15, 2003.

Flu Shot Clinic on Tuesday, Oct. 7
A Flu Shot Clinic will be held in the lobby of the C.U.B. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m.-noon. This clinic is open to all Faculty, Staff and Students, and their family members. The charge will be $10 for the shot. No appointment necessary.

Social Work Student Lounge to Have Open House
The Social Work Program is pleased to announce the opening of the Social Work Student "Lounge" in the College of Business Building. We now have an official corner of the MBA Student Lounge where Social Work students and friends can get together, study, learn news about the Social Work Program, and discover professional opportunities in Social Work.

The University Friends of Music and the Department of Music proudly announce the 36th annual POPS Dinner Concert on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. El Portal Winners AnnouncedThe spring 2003 issue of El Portal is now available. First place winners in the spring 2003 issue were Sarah Boyts, art, Elizabeth Ann Galligan, poetry, and Melissa Jones Witt, fiction. Honorable mention awards went to Jennifer Buntz (fiction) and Leslie Riggins (poetry). Featured authors in the issue include Holly Atwood, Leah Berry, Robin Bennett, LaShawn Byrd, Shannara Green, Laura Holder, Bob Huber, Marilyn Huber, Ruven Ortiz, M. Lynette Palma, Nicole Phinney, and Sarah Wheeler. The faculty sponsor of this issue was Ms. Jane Thompson; the student editor was Natalie Solomon, assisted by Matthew Yoder and Ann Dennis, judges. Soccer Team Needs Ball Boys and Girls – ENMU Women's Soccer is looking for ball boys or girls to shag balls at our home games on Oct. 10, 12, 17, 18 and 31 and Nov. 2. The team is looking for 10-12 year olds. Please call Tracy at ext. 2275.

Homecoming Book Sale – The Golden Library is hosting a homecoming book sale on Friday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The book sale will help fund a new automated computer system for the library. The books will be from donations. All books being sold are used and cost 50 cents each. Bring a "Homecoming Book Sale" flyer and get two additional books free with a purchase. You can buy a "bakers dozen" (13) for $6. The library will also present a special display of books written by ENMU employees, alumni or former students. These include works by Jack Williamson (science fiction), Michael Blake (“Dances with Wolves”), Marsha Howl (romance), and Joan Clayton (religion). ENMU Library to Showcase Books Written by ENMU Grads – The Golden Library will present a special display of publications written by ENMU alumni during the Homecoming weekend, Oct. 10-12. If you would like your work to be included in the exhibit, please contact the Golden Library staff as soon as possible. ENMU-Ruidoso to Offer Indigenous Education Course – A special weekend workshop for public school educators addressing the education of indigenous or native people will be offered Oct. 10-12 at ENMU-Ruidoso. The one-credit course is designed for students with large Native American student enrollments. Topics to be covered include school operations, leadership, community relations, cultural and language influences, school report cards and others. Parts of the Public Law 107-110, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, will also be covered. Cost of the course is $26 within the Ruidoso School district and $30 outside. Registration can take place by phone, fax, in-person or on-line. The course begins at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the ENMU offices, 709 Mechem Drive. Surviving Columbus Video – On Monday, Oct. 13, Columbus Day Observance, the Native-American Affairs Office will show a video, "Surviving Columbus". Showtimes will be at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Ground Zero.

Bookstore Can Make Your Dream(weaver) Come True – The Campus Bookstore has a few Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 Licenses for those Campus Departments that want to tie into the Campus Web. The Friends of Eastern Foundation Breakfast Set – The Friends of Eastern Foundation will honor Foundation supporters and recipients of the Outstanding Business, Philanthropist, and Volunteer of the Year Awards, and the Distinguished Emeritus Faculty, Alumni Association and Greyhound Hall of Honors Awards at the annual Friends of Eastern Foundation Homecoming Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 11. This is the 28th annual special recognition event for contributors to the Friends of Eastern Foundation. The RSVP invitations are sent to Foundation contributors of $50 or more. Calling All Artists and Writers! – El Portal, ENMU’s literary magazine, invites submissions for the winter issue. 'Cowboy Boss' Luncheon Set for Oct. 14 – Ya'll come whether you're th boss or not. The event is sponsored by the Association of Educational Office Professionals, and is set on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Tickets for the Chuck Wagon are $5 per person. The contact is Kathie Brunson, ext. 2200. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Oct. 7. The menu includes: Barbeque Brisket or Chicken, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Cowboy Biscuits, Peach Cobbler, Tea, Coffee or Water. Dress is "cattle drive casual." Entertainment will be by Billy Cathy and his Cowboy Ropes, and Blue Grass Music by The Howards. There will also be door prizes.

Partners Training Program – Counseling and Career Services will start conducting the Partners Training Program. If you have any questions, please call Shirley at 562.2211. The Partners training program is approximately two hours in length complete with video and handouts. The program includes topics such as: Advantages of Working on Campus, Active Listening, Learn Good Telephone Techniques, Going the Extra Mile, Asking Questions, Handling Difficult Situations, Confidentiality, Student Employment Contracts and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Note: All student employees are required to only attend one two-hour Partners Training Program session while attending Eastern. The Training Program will be held in SAS Room 214.

Comprehensive Examination WorkShop – Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 120 of the Education Building from 9 a.m.-noon. Students taking the comprehensive examination are strongly urged to attend this workshop. No prior registration necessary.

Comprehensive Examination: Saturday, Nov. 1 in Room 120 of the Education Building from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.

Writing Proficiency Examination: Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 125 of the Education Building from 10-11:30 a.m.. Graduate student must complete this exam during the first semester of graduate study.

Kitchen Creations, A Cooking School for Diabetics and Their Families – is coming to Roosevelt County. People with diabetes in Roosevelt County will have a chance to learn how to prepare good-tasting and healthy foods at the new Kitchen Creations cooking school sponsored by the Roosevelt County office of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service and the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

Kitchen Creations offers recipes and up-to-date information for nutrition and meal planning. People with diabetes, as well as their family members or caretakers, are encouraged to attend. Classes will be held every Monday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at ENMU Family and Consumer Education Department. Call 356.4417 as soon as possible to register. The classes are free but spaces are limited, so call now to enroll. Classes may be taken for credit through ENMU Continuing Education for a fee. Participants or a family member must have diabetes, in order to take the class.

The Young Democrats of Eastern New Mexico – will be having our first meeting on Sept. 17 in the Pecos Room. There will be free pizza and
refreshment. We will be discussing our goals for the semester and talking about our trip to New Orleans, La., for a campus invasion. All ENMU

AA Meetings – The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous is sponsoring two weekly meetings on Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation, 1417 S. Ave. K. Portales residents and members of the University community who are concerned about their own or others' alcohol and drug abuse issues are invited to attend. It is an open meeting.

Defensive Driving Renewal Required Every Four Years – Renewal of defensive driving is required every four years. For "faculty and staff" that is in need to be recertified for defensive driving we have approximately two years to have this recertification completed. It does not have to be completed this year. We have ample time to have everyone including first-time students, faculty and staff to complete this training. The University Police Department is in the process of providing schedules to try to meet everyone's needs. These will include some day-time classes, along with some night-time class and if need be then we will have some classes on Saturday.

For personnel that need to renew their defensive driving, which is a four-hour class, those dates are Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and Oct. 28 from 1-5 p.m. Everyone needs to sign up at the University Police Department to get their material for the course.

ENMU Looking for Artistic Alumni and Students – Members of Eastern's Department of Art and the Alumni Association would like to invite artistic alumni and students to participate in an art exhibition to be held Homecoming weekend on Oct. 10-12. All About Hummingbirds – a one-evening class with Dan True, author of Hummingbirds of North America, Thursday, October 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m., COB-138. The fee is $15. Please register by Oct. 13.
Cooking with Kids for the Holidays – a team price of only $15 for both parent and child to learn kid-friendly recipes for the holidays, Saturday, Oct. 18, 9-11:30 a.m., FCS-98. Ages 6 years and up are welcome with a lab fee of $10, payable to the instructor, Carmen Matthews. Please register by Oct. 15.
Aqua Aerobics – with Kristy Jones, Tuesdays/Thursdays, Sept. 2-Nov. 20, 6-6:50 p.m., Natatorium. The fee is $90 for all 12 rotations or pay $8 each Tuesday. All you need is swimsuit, towel and appropriate shoes.
Yoga – With Lisa Moyer, Tuesdays/Thursdays, Sept. 2-Dec. 11 (no class Nov. 25 and 27), 7-7:50 p.m., GA-11. The fee is $70 prepaid. Sorry, no walkup payments; however, proportionate payment arrangements can be made with Extended Learning by calling 562.2165.
Swimming – With Kristy Jones and additional Red Cross Lifeguards will be held at the Natatorium for ages 4 years and up in four 8-day rotations, Mondays-Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m. The fee is $40 and includes a Red Cross Certification Card for the level passed. Rotation #1 is Sept. 8-18, #2 is Sept. 29-Oct. 9, #3 is Oct. 20-30 and #4 is Nov. 10-20. Please register by Friday noon prior to each rotation. Parental consent is required.
Scrapbook Power Class – With Kyla Gray, Creative Memories Consultant, Saturdays, 2-4 p.m., either Sept. 13 or Oct. 18, COB-156. The fee is only $10 and includes class handouts! Please register by Sept. 10 or Oct. 15, respectively.
