Pat Green in Free Concert at ENMU This Thursday Night Texas
country superstar Pat Green will play a free concert in the Campus
Union Ballroom at Eastern at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18. The concert
is limited to 2,000 fans. ENMU students will have first priority,
ENMU faculty and staff second, and the general public third. The
doors will open at 7 p.m. for students, 7:30 p.m. for faculty and
staff, and 7:45 p.m. for the public.
Green will play from his album Wave On Wave, released
July 15, his first new album in almost two years. "Wave on
Wave" is currently high on the national records charts. Green
has been touring incessantly since 1995 and continues to be one
of the biggest concert draws in the country. Green's last album,
Three Days, peaked on the country billboard charts at
number seven, then proceeded to stay on the charts for a year.
The concert is sponsored by Student Activities and Organizations

Informational Forum on Constitutional Amendments
On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. a forum on two important
amendments to the New Mexico Constitution will be held in Room 112
of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building, on the campus of ENMU.
Voters will decide on these amendments on Sept. 23.
Amendment 1 would create a Secretary of Education and reorganize
the Department of Education, including the Education Commission.
Amendment 2 would increase the distribution to K-12 education from
the Land Grant Permanent Fund. Handouts presenting pro and con arguments
from several sources will be distributed at the door. Three panelists
will then give short presentations, one on the history of the Department
of Education and the Permanent Fund, one arguing for the proposed
changes, and one arguing against. The panelists will then address
comments and questions from the audience.
This forum is sponsored by the American Association of University
Women, Portales Branch, and the local unit of AARP. For further

Hispanic Affairs Hosting 16 de Septiembre
Celebration: Includes Fireworks on Campus!
Hispanic Affairs is hosting 16 de Septiembre Celebration,
a celebration in remembrance of Mexicos Independence Day.
The celebration will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
in the Campus Union Ballroom. Students and the community are invited.
The celebration will include a performance from the Raramuri, a
group of dancers who will perform dances from different states in
Mexico. Refreshments and prizes will be given. A fireworks show
will be located between the Campus Bookstore and the water fountain

Partners Training Program
Counseling and Career Services will start conducting the Partners
Training Program on Monday, Sept. 22. If you have any questions,
please call Shirley at 562.2211. The Partners training program is
approximately two hours in length complete with video and handouts.
The program includes topics such as: Advantages of Working on Campus,
Active Listening, Learn Good Telephone Techniques, Going the Extra
Mile, Asking Questions, Handling Difficult Situations, Confidentiality,
Student Employment Contracts and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.
Note: All student employees are required to only attend one two-hour
Partners Training Program session while attending Eastern. The Training
Program will be held in SAS Room 214.

Comprehensive Examination WorkShop
Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 120 of the Education Building from
9 a.m.-noon. Students taking the comprehensive examination are strongly
urged to attend this workshop. No prior registration necessary.
Comprehensive Examination: Saturday, Nov. 1 in Room 120 of the Education
Building from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Registration required by
Sept. 19.
Writing Proficiency Examination: Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 125 of
the Education Building from 10-11:30 a.m.. Graduate student must
complete this exam during the first semester of graduate study.
There is no charge for these events. Students are required to bring
a pen or pencil. Questions may be directed to Pat Gallegos at ext.

Soccer Youth Clinic Set
The soccer team is holding a soccer youth clinic at the soccer fields
on Sept. 21 from 5-6:30 p.m. for players ages 5-14, instructed by
ENMU head coach Travis McCorkle, assistant coach Tracy Simmons,
and the ENMU women's soccer players. It will be
free and the players must provide their own soccer ball and shin
guards. Parents must sign a participation form which will be available
on site or at the ENMU athletic office.
Writing Across the Curriculum
Eastern New Mexico University is hosting an opportunity for
teachers who want to learn effective research-based strategies for
"Writing Across the Curriculum." The High Plains Writing
Project at Eastern is hosting its second annual showcase conference,
Writing Across the Curriculum from 8-11:45 a.m. on Saturday,
Sept. 27 at the ENMU-Roswell IC building. All teachers and teachers-in-training
are invited to attend. The cost is $20 for teachers and $10 for
students, student teachers, and associates. New teachers who come
with their mentors are free. Register by mail (High Plains Writing
Project, Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, P.O. Box 6000, Roswell,
NM 88202) for a 10 percent discount. In just one morning, you will
receive information on at least 16 research-based teaching demonstrations
and have the opportunity to talk to the teachers who developed them
and who are using them in New Mexico schools. A CD will be available
for purchase containing handouts and research rationales for all
the demonstrations, both those presented throughout the morning
and those exhibited in the showcase rooms. For more information,

Kitchen Creations, A Cooking School for
Diabetics and Their Families is coming to Roosevelt
County. People with diabetes in Roosevelt County will have a chance
to learn how to prepare good-tasting and healthy foods at the new
Kitchen Creations cooking school sponsored by the Roosevelt County
office of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service and the New
Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
Kitchen Creations offers recipes and up-to-date information for
nutrition and meal planning. People with diabetes, as well as their
family members or caretakers, are encouraged to attend. Classes
will be held every Monday beginning on Sept. 22 from 1:30-4:30 p.m.
at ENMU Family and Consumer Education Department. Call 356.4417
as soon as possible to register. The classes are free but spaces
are limited, so call now to enroll. Classes may be taken for credit
through ENMU Continuing Education for a fee. Participants or a family
member must have diabetes, in order to take the class.
The Young Democrats of Eastern New Mexico will be having
our first meeting on Sept. 17 in the Pecos Room. There will be free
pizza and
refreshment. We will be discussing our goals for the semester and
talking about our trip to New Orleans, La., for a campus invasion.

Homecoming Parade All individuals and
organizations wishing to participate in the Saturday, Oct. 11 Eastern
New Mexico University Homecoming Parade must register by Monday,
Sept. 29. Advance registration is necessary for placement in the
parade and to include the entrant's name in the parade program that
is distributed along the parade route.
The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Abilene and Third, goes north
to First Street, and west on First Street to the ENMU Campus. This
year's theme is "Classic Movies." Registration and additional
information are available by contacting Parade Chair Danica Silva
in the Alumni Affairs office at 505.562.2125. The Alumni Affairs
office is located in Room 108 of the Administration Building on
the ENMU campus.
Student Organizations Can Get $100 to Help with Homecoming Floats
Student organizations wishing to participate
in the Saturday, Oct. 11 ENMU Homecoming Parade must register by
Monday, Sept. 29. Those entering floats can receive $100 in assistance
from Alumni Affairs. Organizations can apply at the Alumni Affairs
office located in the Administration Building beginning Monday,
Sept. 17.

Kellie McGaarh Scholarship Available One Kellie
McGaarh Scholarship in the amount of $250 is available for an undergraduate
education major student teaching elementary, secondary, or special
education in the spring semester, 2004. Application packet will
consist of application form and an essay explaining "gender
equity and its application in the classroom." Reference letters
or forms will not be considered. The 2003-2004 Guide to Scholarships
is available online at www.enmu.edu/aboutenmu/development/scholarships/index.shtml
and at the Office of Development. Application deadline is Oct. 1,
2003.
ENMU Seniors Invited to Career Workshop on Friday, Sept. 19
Sodexho
and Career Services cordially invite ENMU seniors to the Fall Career
Workshop on Friday, Sept. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the Zia Room. Free
dinner with Dining Etiquette and Career Information will be presented,
in addition to career packets loaded with resume and interview tips
and dressing for success tools for those attending. Pre-registration

AA Meetings The
Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous is sponsoring two weekly
meetings on Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation,
1417 S. Ave. K. Portales residents and members of the University
community who are concerned about their own or others' alcohol and
drug abuse issues are invited to attend. It is an open meeting.
Defensive
Driving Renewal Required Every Four Years Renewal
of defensive driving is required every four years. For "faculty
and staff" that is in need to be recertified for defensive
driving we have approximately two years to have this recertification
completed. It does not have to be completed this year. We have ample
time to have everyone including first-time students, faculty and
staff to complete this training. The University Police Department
is in the process of providing schedules to try to meet everyone's
needs. These will include some day-time classes, along with some
night-time class and if need be then we will have some classes on
Saturday.
The next defensive
driving for new people that need to attend the course will be offered
on Sept. 8 and 9 from 6-9 p.m. in the Zia Room in the Campus Union
Building. We have another class set up for Sept. 10 and 11 at the
same place and same times. For personnel that need to renew their
defensive driving, which is a four-hour class, those dates are Oct.
15 from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and Oct. 28
from 1-5 p.m. Everyone needs to sign up at the University Police
Department to get their material for the course.
Student Teacher Application Meetings
Scheduled All ENMU students who plan to student
teach during the Spring 2004 semester must attend a pre-application
meeting to receive the required information concerning application
procedures. Three sessions at the Portales campus have been scheduled
and students may choose the session that is most convenient for
their schedule. One session each has also been scheduled at the
Roswell and Ruidoso campuses.
Sept. 22 sessions are scheduled for 12-1 or 3:30-4:30 in the Faculty
Lounge, Campus Union Building, Portales campus.
Sept. 23 session from 6-7 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, Campus Union
Building, Portales campus.
Sept. 24 session from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Instructional Center,
Room 206, Roswell campus.

Calling All Former
Cowboys and Cowgirls All past and present cowboys
and cowgirls who have been members of the National Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association at Eastern New Mexico University are invited to
celebrate "40 Years of Rodeo" at the first Alumni Rodeo
Reunion. The celebration will kick-off during ENMU's annual "College
Daze Rodeo" Sept. 18-20 at Lewis Cooper Arena in Portales.
