Teachers' Workshop Set at ENMU – Eastern New Mexico University is hosting a K-12 teachers' workshop on Oct 2-4 in the Science Building. The workshop is being funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant under the EPSCoR program (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research). Teachers can still apply to participate by contacting Dr. Robert Long, assistant professor of chemistry at ENMU, at 505.562.2496 (robert.long@enmu.edu).

Interested in Law School? – The ENMU Pre-Law Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta is hosting a Pre-Law meeting Thursday, Oct. 2 at 4:30 p.m. in COB 128. Please join us to learn more about Phi Alpha Delta and pre-law activities at ENMU.

ENMU Homecoming Golf Experience
– is scheduled for Oct. 10 with morning (8 a.m.) and afternoon (1 p.m.) tee-times. Entry fee is $35 per person, cart fee not included. Lunch will be served from 11-12. Tennis Tournament – Intramurals and Recreational Sports will host a tennis tournament for all ENMU students, faculty and staff members. The 2-day tournament will be held on Oct. 4-5, starting at 5 p.m. There is no entry fee, as always. We invite all players of all levels to participate.

Soccer Clinic for Kids Has Nice Turnout
– The ENMU women's soccer team had approximately 60+ youth soccer players attend their free youth soccer clinic last weekend.

Soccer Team Needs Ball Boys and Girls – ENMU Women's Soccer is looking for ball boys or girls to shag balls at our home games on Oct. 10, 12, 17, 18 and 31 and Nov. 2. The team is looking for 10-12 year olds. Please call Tracy at ext. 2275.

NIH-Funded Bridges Program Enjoying Success – According to Dr. Manny Varela, ENMU has an NIH-funded Bridges program, which is devoted to increasing the number of minority graduate students in the area of biomedical research. The 'Bridge' component seeks to transfer Eastern's MS graduate students into Ph.D. programs or to environments where they have the opportunity to conduct biomedical research.

Dr. Laurie Hudson, from UNM, is the Bridges Program Director for the grant, and Dr. Marcy Osgood (UNM) is co-director. Dr. Varela is the program coordinator for the program at ENMU, which has a consortium agreement with the primary institution (UNM) regarding the first two grants. Other NM institutions (NM Tech, Highlands) are involved in the Bridges program. Eastern has been successful in the past in 'bridging' our students: Luis Garza (MS '98) is getting his medical doctorate this year; Jonathan Burgos (MS '03) is presently in the Ph.D. program at SUNY Buffalo; and Stephanie Perez (MS to be defended this December) has been accepted into the Ph.D. program at Texas A & M.

Homecoming Book Sale – The Golden Library is hosting a homecoming book sale on Friday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The book sale will help fund a new automated computer system for the library. The books will be from donations. All books being sold are used and cost 50 cents each. Bring a "Homecoming Book Sale" flyer and get two additional books free with a purchase. You can buy a "bakers dozen" (13) for $6. The library will also present a special display of books written by ENMU employees, alumni or former students. These include works by Jack Williamson (science fiction), Michael Blake (“Dances with Wolves”), Marsha Howl (romance), and Joan Clayton (religion). ENMU Library to Showcase Books Written by ENMU Grads – The Golden Library will present a special display of publications written by ENMU alumni during the Homecoming weekend, Oct. 10-12. If you would like your work to be included in the exhibit, please contact the Golden Library staff as soon as possible. Classical Guitarist in Concert on Tuesday Night – The Department of Music at Eastern will present a concert by Juan Francisco Ortiz on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building. Ortiz is a French-born classical guitarist who is both a concert artist and composer. He was recommended to Dr. John Olsen, chair of the Department of Music, by the music faculty at Texas Tech University. Ortiz has performed around the world, including in Spain, Mexico, Honduras, and Turkey. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Olsen at ext. 2377.

ENMU-Ruidoso to Offer Indigenous Education Course – A special weekend workshop for public school educators addressing the education of indigenous or native people will be offered Oct. 10-12 at ENMU-Ruidoso. The one-credit course is designed for students with large Native American student enrollments. Topics to be covered include school operations, leadership, community relations, cultural and language influences, school report cards and others. Parts of the Public Law 107-110, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, will also be covered. Cost of the course is $26 within the Ruidoso School district and $30 outside. Registration can take place by phone, fax, in-person or on-line. The course begins at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the ENMU offices, 709 Mechem Drive. Surviving Columbus Video – On Monday, Oct. 13, Columbus Day Observance, the Native-American Affairs Office will show a video, "Surviving Columbus". Showtimes will be at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Ground Zero. Thank you for promoting and posting this information.

Faculty and Teaching Staff Need to Order Spring Textbooks – Spring Textbook Orders are due no later than Oct. 3. Turn in your order before Oct. 3 and receive a 40 percent discount coupon for clothing and imprinted items. Your efficiency and promptness in turning in your book orders will result in the Bookstore's ability to buyback textbooks for the students' benefit. This will also allow the Bookstore to have a greater stock of "Used Books" next term, another benefit for the students. The Friends of Eastern Foundation Breakfast Set – The Friends of Eastern Foundation will honor Foundation supporters and recipients of the Outstanding Business, Philanthropist, and Volunteer of the Year Awards, and the Distinguished Emeritus Faculty, Alumni Association and Greyhound Hall of Honors Awards at the annual Friends of Eastern Foundation Homecoming Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 11. This is the 28th annual special recognition event for contributors to the Friends of Eastern Foundation. The RSVP invitations are sent to Foundation contributors of $50 or more. Silent Auction to Benefit Senior Volunteer Programs
– The Retired & Senior Volunteer, Foster Grandparent, and Senior Companion Programs of Roosevelt County will be holding a silent auction on Sept. 29-Oct. 3 inside Portales National Bank. Additional funds are raised throughout the year to compensate for travel reimbursements, special outings for the senior volunteers, and costs incurred. Many of the senior volunteers have made and donated items such as crocheted lap quilts, table clothes, pictures, and woodworking items. Several businesses in Portales have also donated items. Please show your support for the senior volunteer programs of Roosevelt County. All proceeds directly benefit the senior volunteer programs, please drop by and show your support.

Calling All Artists and Writers! – El Portal, ENMU’s literary magazine, invites submissions for the winter issue. Short stories, plays, prose, poetry and black and white art or photography can be sent to El Portal, Station 19, ENMU, by Oct. 27 by any ENMU student, faculty, or staff member. 'Cowboy Boss' Luncheon Set for Oct. 14 – Ya'll come whether you're th boss or not. The event is sponsored by the Association of Educational Office Professionals, and is set on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Tickets for the Chuck Wagon are $5 per person. The contact is Kathie Brunson, ext. 2200. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Oct. 7. The menu includes: Barbeque Brisket or Chicken, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Cowboy Biscuits, Peach Cobbler, Tea, Coffee or Water. Dress is "cattle drive casual." Entertainment will be by Billy Cathy and his Cowboy Ropes, and Blue Grass Music by The Howards. There will also be door prizes.

Partners Training Program – Counseling and Career Services will start conducting the Partners Training Program. If you have any questions, please call Shirley at 562.2211. The Partners training program is approximately two hours in length complete with video and handouts. The program includes topics such as: Advantages of Working on Campus, Active Listening, Learn Good Telephone Techniques, Going the Extra Mile, Asking Questions, Handling Difficult Situations, Confidentiality, Student Employment Contracts and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Note: All student employees are required to only attend one two-hour Partners Training Program session while attending Eastern. The Training Program will be held in SAS Room 214.

Comprehensive Examination WorkShop – Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 120 of the Education Building from 9 a.m.-noon. Students taking the comprehensive examination are strongly urged to attend this workshop. No prior registration necessary.

Comprehensive Examination: Saturday, Nov. 1 in Room 120 of the Education Building from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Registration required by Sept. 19.

Writing Proficiency Examination: Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 125 of the Education Building from 10-11:30 a.m.. Graduate student must complete this exam during the first semester of graduate study.

Kitchen Creations, A Cooking School for Diabetics and Their Families – is coming to Roosevelt County. People with diabetes in Roosevelt County will have a chance to learn how to prepare good-tasting and healthy foods at the new Kitchen Creations cooking school sponsored by the Roosevelt County office of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service and the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

Kitchen Creations offers recipes and up-to-date information for nutrition and meal planning. People with diabetes, as well as their family members or caretakers, are encouraged to attend. Classes will be held every Monday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at ENMU Family and Consumer Education Department. Call 356.4417 as soon as possible to register. The classes are free but spaces are limited, so call now to enroll. Classes may be taken for credit through ENMU Continuing Education for a fee. Participants or a family member must have diabetes, in order to take the class.

The Young Democrats of Eastern New Mexico – will be having our first meeting on Sept. 17 in the Pecos Room. There will be free pizza and
refreshment. We will be discussing our goals for the semester and talking about our trip to New Orleans, La., for a campus invasion. All ENMU

ENMU Homecoming Parade – All individuals and organizations wishing to participate in the Saturday, Oct. 11 Eastern New Mexico University Homecoming Parade must register by Monday, Sept. 29. Advance registration is necessary for placement in the parade and to include the entrant's name in the parade program that is distributed along the parade route.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Abilene and Third, goes north to First Street, and west on First Street to the ENMU Campus. This year's theme is "Classic Movies." Registration and additional information are available by contacting Parade Chair Danica Silva in the Alumni Affairs office at 505.562.2125. The Alumni Affairs office is located in Room 108 of the Administration Building on the ENMU campus.

Student Organizations Can Get $100 to Help with Homecoming Floats –
Student organizations wishing to participate in the Saturday, Oct. 11 ENMU Homecoming Parade must register by Monday, Sept. 29. Those entering floats can receive $100 in assistance from Alumni Affairs. Organizations can apply at the Alumni Affairs office located in the Administration Building beginning Monday, Sept. 17.

Registration and additional information are available by contacting Parade Chair Danica Silva in the Alumni Affairs office at 505.562.2125. The Alumni Affairs office is located in Room 108 of the Administration Building on the ENMU campus.

Kellie McGaarh Scholarship Available
– One Kellie McGaarh Scholarship in the amount of $250 is available for an undergraduate education major student teaching elementary, secondary, or special education in the spring semester, 2004. Application packet will consist of application form and an essay explaining "gender equity and its application in the classroom." Reference letters or forms will not be considered. The 2003-2004 Guide to Scholarships is available online at www.enmu.edu/aboutenmu/development/scholarships/index.shtml and at the Office of Development. Application deadline is Oct. 1, 2003.

AA Meetings – The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous is sponsoring two weekly meetings on Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation, 1417 S. Ave. K. Portales residents and members of the University community who are concerned about their own or others' alcohol and drug abuse issues are invited to attend. It is an open meeting.


Defensive Driving Renewal Required Every Four Years – Renewal of defensive driving is required every four years. For "faculty and staff" that is in need to be recertified for defensive driving we have approximately two years to have this recertification completed. It does not have to be completed this year. We have ample time to have everyone including first-time students, faculty and staff to complete this training. The University Police Department is in the process of providing schedules to try to meet everyone's needs. These will include some day-time classes, along with some night-time class and if need be then we will have some classes on Saturday.

For personnel that need to renew their defensive driving, which is a four-hour class, those dates are Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and Oct. 28 from 1-5 p.m. Everyone needs to sign up at the University Police Department to get their material for the course.

ENMU Looking for Artistic Alumni and Students – Members of Eastern's Department of Art and the Alumni Association would like to invite artistic alumni and students to participate in an art exhibition to be held Homecoming weekend on Oct. 10-12. The show will be held in the Campus Union Building, and will be open to the public for viewing.

Swimming – With Kristy Jones and additional Red Cross Lifeguards will be held at the Natatorium for ages 4 years and up in four 8-day rotations, Mondays-Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m. The fee is $40 and includes a Red Cross Certification Card for the level passed.
