NIH-Funded Bridges Program Enjoying Success
According to Dr. Manny Varela, ENMU has an NIH-funded Bridges
program, which is devoted to increasing the number of minority graduate
students in the area of biomedical research. The 'Bridge' component
seeks to transfer Eastern's MS graduate students into Ph.D. programs
or to environments where they have the opportunity to conduct biomedical
research.
Dr. Laurie Hudson, from UNM, is the Bridges Program Director for
the grant, and Dr. Marcy Osgood (UNM) is co-director. Dr. Varela
is the program coordinator for the program at ENMU, which has a
consortium agreement with the primary institution (UNM) regarding
the first two grants. Other NM institutions (NM Tech, Highlands)
are involved in the Bridges program. Eastern has been successful
in the past in 'bridging' our students: Luis Garza (MS '98) is getting
his medical doctorate this year; Jonathan Burgos (MS '03) is presently
in the Ph.D. program at SUNY Buffalo; and Stephanie Perez (MS to
be defended this December) has been accepted into the Ph.D. program
