Back-to-School Fall Breakfast Set for Tuesday, August 24 – The annual faculty/staff Fall Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 24, in the Ballroom of the Campus Union Building. Early Birds will be served beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:20. All ENMU employees are invited to attend. Traditional breakfast fare will be offered as well as a lighter fare of cereals, breads and fruit. The program will include introductions of new faculty and staff as well as information updates from President Gamble and the administration.

Back-to-School Meetings for Faculty Set for Tuesday, August 24
– Information sessions for faculty will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, immediately following the Fall Breakfast (around 9:45 a.m.). Information will be shared on several new initiatives that are being implemented this fall. New faculty (or anyone else who wants to) can have their photo taken by Communication Services in the CUB lobby.

Student Director of African-American Affairs Position Open – The position of student director for the office of African-American Affairs is open. Admissions Seeks Volunteers for Roosevelt County Fair – The Admissions Office is looking for volunteers to work their booth at the Roosevelt County Fair on the following days:
Thursday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 27 from 1-10 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Fall Sign-up Underway for Lifelong Wellness – Fall semester is rapidly approaching, and we encourage you to join our Lifelong Wellness program. Remember, you may use your tuition waiver for this program even if you are enrolled in another class. Also, you would be taxed on this tuition waiver only if you are categorized as a graduate student so that you can enroll for graduate credits. (If you have questions related to the tuition waiver, please check with Mary Drabbs.)

To enroll for fall, simply reply to mary.drabbs@enmu.edu and tell me which option you would like.
1-credit (You need to accumulate 27 half-hour activity sessions.)
2-credits (You need to accumulate 54 half-hour activity sessions.)

If you would like to participate in an existing physical activity class, please tell me the class and meeting days/times, and I'll save a spot for you.

People new to the program will need to attend one half-hour orientation session. We have sessions scheduled on

Campus Phones North of Highway 70 Out on Monday, August 23 – An emergency repair to the telephone cable supplying service to the campus buildings north of Highway 70 must be made on Monday, Aug. 23. There will be no Campus telephone or pay-phone service to this area while the repair is in progress. The cable repair is expected to impact service for the day. This project will impact the following buildings: President's Residence, West Campus Apartments, Greyhound Arena, the football and baseball field houses, ZTA House, FHA/HERO building, and the north warehouses.

ENMU-Roswell Holds Fall Open Registration – Open registration for the fall semester at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26. Students can enroll for classes on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center lobby on campus. The fall semester runs from Monday, Aug. 30 through Friday, Dec. 17. Advisors will be on hand to assist students with admission applications and course selections. Students can also log on to the ENMU-Roswell web site at www.roswell.enmu.edu to register online for classes through Sept. 3. An application for admission can also be completed through the web site. For registration information, students may call 624.7149 or 1.800.243.6687. Students with special needs or hearing impaired students may call 624.7286 or 624.7300 for the TTY/TDD machine.

ENMU-Roswell Community Band Begins Rehearsals on August 30 – The ENMU-Roswell Community Band will begin rehearsals on Monday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. in the ENMU-Roswell Performing Arts Center. The Community Band is comprised of musicians of every age who practice weekly. Kent Jordan is returning as the principal conductor for the band. The group presents a concert each spring and fall. In addition, band members play for university graduation and participate in performances with guest organizations like the ENMU-Portales Symphonic Band. Instrumental musicians from the community are encouraged to join this group. Each musician must furnish an instrument except those who play percussion or tuba. Participants may enroll in the course for credit or pay a $30 participation fee each semester. Registration will be held during the regular ENMU-Roswell registration on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and during the first rehearsal. High school students may also register through concurrent enrollment. For information, contact Jane Batson, ENMU-Roswell Division Chair of Health Occupations, at 624.7233.

Register for University Parking Permit Online – It's that time of year that all vehicles on campus need to have 2004-2005 parking permits. The University Police has a way to register vehicle(s) on-line. The link to the registration form is: https://ad05.enmu.edu:7177/prod/plsql/parking.p_ApplicationForm. (Has been moved.) Read the instructions on the application and be sure to fill in all blanks. If not, this may delay your parking permits from being delivered.

New Library Service for Faculty – Golden Library’s Interlibrary Loan Department will offer on-campus delivery of Golden Library and ILL materials to faculty offices beginning fall semester. Delivery of requested items and pick-up of returning items will occur between 2-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, during regular semester hours. Request forms for ILL and Golden material are accessible from the ILLiad main menu. Medical Leave Bank Policies Explained

What is the Medical Leave Bank?

The medical leave bank is a pool of hours to which any regular employee who earns medical and/or annual leave may donate some of their accumulated leave hours. The purpose of the medical leave bank is to provide medical leave to contributors who have suffered an unplanned personal illness, injury, disability or quarantine and who have exhausted their compensatory time and medical and annual leave balances.

Who is eligible to join?

Any regular ENMU employee who earns medical and annual leave and has a current medical leave balance of at least six days (hours are prorated for part-time employees) as of July 31, 2004, is eligible to participate in the Bank.

How much do I have to contribute?

Initial contribution is three days if you work full-time; hours are prorated if you work part-time. With prior written notice, the medical leave bank committee may request additional hours from the membership if the hours in the bank fall below one day per member.

Who makes decisions on request for time from the bank?


The medical leave bank is administered by a five-member committee appointed by the President to review requests for withdrawal of medical leave from the bank.

How do I enroll?


The medical leave bank policy, enrollment and request forms are available from the office of Personnel Services, Administration Building, Room 207, or by calling the office at 562.2115. Return completed form to Personnel Services, Station 21, by Nov. 30. Members who have been in the Medical Leave Bank for 30 calendar days are eligible to apply for days from the Bank.

Note: If you are already in the Bank, additional contributions are not needed unless notified by the committee.

Hispanic Organizations Fair Set – Hispanic Affairs is getting ready for a new semester of activities. A "Hispanic Organizations Fair" is planned for the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 30, to help you promote your organization. The fair will be just for Hispanic organizations and will take place in the Campus Union Building Lobby from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You will have a table to display all your trophies, certificates, pictures, decorations, and everything else that represents your organization. We will also decorate the lobby to make it more attractive for the new students. The set-up time will be at 7 a.m. in order to be ready by 8 a.m. when the first group of new students go eat breakfast at the cafeteria.

I need to know by Monday, Aug. 23 if your organization is interested in participating. This is the perfect opportunity to find new members for your organization and to share with the student body what your organization is all about. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity. Trevor Ivy is New General Manager for Sodexho Campus Dining – Trevor Ivy has been named the new general manager for Sodexho Campus Dining here at Eastern. Ivy fills the vacant position left when Prem Lawrence took a position with Sodexho in Arizona. Ivy moved to Portales from Chicago in 2002, and previously served as Sodexho's catering and retail operations manager at ENMU. He is a native of Hobbs. Sodexho is advertising for a new catering manager.

President Announces Search to Begin For Vice President for Academic Affairs – Due to the retirement of Dr. K. Paul Jones at the conclusion of the 2004-05 year, the university will begin a search for a vice president for Academic Affairs early in the fall semester. I anticipate that a screening committee will be formed by mid-September and a formal job announcement will be advertised nationally in early October. I look forward to the cooperation of all faculty, staff and administration as we proceed with this very important search.

Materials Needed for Weekend Activities and Games – Student Activities and Organizations is hosting a late night program called WEEKEND ACTIVITIES & GAMES (WAG). We are going to have a craft night on Sept. 4 and we are looking for any creative materials that could be used. If you have something lying around your house/office that could be used, please bring your supplies to the Student Activities and Organizations office located in 108 Campus Union. Just lay everything on our conference table. Items can be but are not limited to fabric, beads, beading wire, stickers, picture frames, scrap booking material or anything that could be used to make some cool stuff. ENMU-Roswell Presents Course on Women and Politics – A new political science course offered at ENMU-Roswell this coming fall semester is titled "Women, Power and Politics." The course, PSCI 205, will involve an in-depth study of the history, policies, and political behavior of women in politics as well as the distribution of political power in Western societies, with an emphasis on the United States. Students will hear from female guest speakers who are active or formerly active in politics at local, state and Federal levels. “The notion behind this course is an objective look at how women have influenced our political world through formation of, indirect and direct participation in, and women's successes and failures within political structures,” said Bill Kuehl, Criminal Justice instructor. The 3-credit-hour course will meet on Fridays from 9-11:30 a.m. The fall semester starts Aug. 30. For registration information, call 624.7149.

Board of Regents Meeting Rescheduled – The Board of Regents meeting scheduled for Aug. 27 has been changed to Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Regents Room.

Clarification About Taxes on Tuition Waivers – Several employees who have a bachelor's degree have expressed a desire to sign up for a Wellness course under the tuition waiver but are turned off by the misunderstanding they have to pay taxes on the tuition waiver. Please be advised that this is no longer true due to a new admission category established over a year ago – post-baccalaureate admission. Anyone with a bachelor's degree who wants to enroll only in undergraduate courses will be admitted under post-baccalaureate admission. You will not be taxed for any tuition waiver for an undergraduate class. Also, if you are paying for an undergraduate course, you will be charged at the undergraduate, not the graduate, rate.

But please note that no one in this category can take a graduate course. If you want to take a graduate course, you have to receive graduate admission. You will be charged graduate rates for all of your courses, including undergraduate courses, and any tuition waiver will be taxable.

Departments Invited to Set Up Display During Dawg Days – Each year new students arrive at Eastern New Mexico University who do not always know about the services that ENMU has to offer. Dawg Days is incorporating a Community / Department / Student Organization Fair during the kick-off BBQ. We are extending an invitation for your department to join us on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 5-8 p.m. The fair will be held in the center of campus near the fountain. A standard-size table and chairs will be provided for each participant. More than one department may be assigned to a table to accommodate space requirements. This is a great way to promote your department to all of the new students and their parents. Campus Bank Closed from 1-2 P.M. Each Day for Lunch – The Portales National Bank Campus Branch will close for lunch from 1-2 p.m. each day throughout the summer.

Spanish Option Available on ENMU Phone System – The Spanish option on the 1.800.367.3668 is now active 24 hours and holidays. The Spanish option for 505.562.1011 is now active after normal work hours and holidays. The operator takes the calls during normal work hours, Monday through Friday. Please let Betsy Chavez or Rick Bresler know if you have any problems with the system.

ENMU Offering CLEP Testing Program for Military – Military service members can now take CLEP exams, without paying the exam fee (normally $55), at Eastern New Mexico University. Service members will still need to pay a registration fee of approximately $15 to ENMU. CLEP is also available to military dependents and civilians who are interested in taking CLEP exams but these candidates are responsible for paying the exam fee of $65. In Portales, New Mexico candidates can take CLEP exams in Room 204 of the SAS Building at ENMU. Testing is available: Aug. 24, 25; Sept. 14, 15, 28, 29; Oct. 12, 13, 26, 27; Nov. 9, 10, 23; and Dec. 14, 15, 21, 22. The tests are administered at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Candidates can make an appointment by calling the Testing Center at 505.562.2280.

Blackwater Draw Site Schedule – The Blackwater Draw Site will open everyday through Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A special photograph/drawing contest will be ongoing through this time period. Call 356.5235 to learn how to win $50 for your photograph or drawing of the happenings that occurred at the Blackwater Draw Site. To register for this contest you must go to the Blackwater Draw Site and register. The cost for the contest is $1 for each one entered. Contact Joanne Dickenson at 356.5235 for details.

Book Drive – The Honor Society of Alpha Lambda Delta is sponsoring a book drive throughout the summer. The organization is collecting books for a sale to be held in the fall of 2004. Hot-Key Henry tip for today (Ctrl key series): While in the Office applications, have you ever wanted to quickly open a document? To quickly display the “Open” document window, press and hold down the Ctrl key, then press the O key (Ctrl-O). Then choose the document you want to open.

Hot Key tip for today (Outlook series): A few weeks back we learned how to reply to a message we had read by using the Ctrl-R key. This hot-key does have a limitation though, it will only replay back to the person who sent you the message. In order to reply back to “all” names that are listed in the email message (From, To, Cc), you need to use the “Reply All” hot-key. To do this, press and hold down the Ctrl key and Shift key, then press the R key (Ctrl-Shift-R). This will place your window in reply all mode where you can type your reply. After typing the message, do not forget to use the hot-key you learned, Ctrl-Enter. This will send the reply all email message on its way.

Telephony
Exiting the Voice Mailbox:
• To exit current option, press 9
• To cancel exit and return to the Ready prompt, press *
• To end the session, press 9 again
Note: If the 9 9 is not used to log off the system, all changes and/or deletions will be lost.

Journaling Your Life – Learn how to begin the process that comes easily once you start with Rev. Clyde Davis, First Presbyterian Church. Don’t forget your journal and pen Monday, Sept. 27, 6-9 p.m., JWLA-109. The fee is $15. Please register by Sept. 22.

Carve a Fish Decoy – Learn to carve a fish decoy from white pine, using copper sheeting for the fins, Oct. 2, 12-5 p.m., JWLA-109. The only material needed for this Saturday afternoon class is your fixed-blade knife. All other supplies are provided with a $5 kit fee payable to the instructor, Rev. Clyde Davis, First Presbyterian Church. The fee is $20.

Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement – Join Victor Baca, Village Pharmacy, and discover the facts concerning this alternative, doctor-prescribed hormone therapy, Thursday, Sept. 23, 7-9 p.m., COB-156. The fee is $25.00. Please register by Sept. 20.

SHINE-Providing Exceptional Customer Service – Bob LaHue, MorningStar Training, offers this workshop twice for your convenience focusing on vital customer service issues and motivational employee training, Saturdays, 1-5 p.m., Sept. 25 or Nov. 20, COB-113. The fee is $50 with a $5 each discount for five or more from one organization. Please register by Sept. 22 or Nov. 17, respectively.

Swimming – For ages four and above, two week rotations Monday-Thursday with Red Cross certified lifeguard Devin McMaster, 4-4:50 p.m., Natatorium. Rotation number one, Sept. 13-23; rotation two is Oct 4-14, rotation three is Oct. 25-Nov. 4 and number four is Nov. 8-18. Register by Friday noon prior to each rotation. Fee $40. Includes Red Cross certification card for level passed.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz Pointe – For ages three and above, 12-week dance courses with Summer Lasiter. All classes will participate in the fourth annual performance of "The Nutcracker" Dec. 11-12. Fee is $70 with some discounts available. For information on class place, times and dates contact Extended Learning before Sept. 8.

Victim Advocacy – A 48-hour live lecture course held on three consecutive Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6-9:30 p.m., and all day Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 13-Oct. 2, COB Building, Room 130. The fee is $525 plus textbook, which is approximately $50. Register by Sept. 3.

Aqua Aerobics – Alisha Eldridge will offer 12, two-day rotations, Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 13-Dec. 8, 7-7:50 p.m.. Natatorium,. The fee is $8 per week or receive a $6 discount by prepaying $90. No classes on Nov. 22 and 24 during Thanksgiving holiday.

Tumbling – Beginning to advanced levels for boys and girls ages five through high school, taught by James Villanueva, GA-11. Beginning Tumbling is Saturdays, Sept 18-Dec.11, 1-1:50 p.m.; Intermediate Tumbling, Mondays, Sept 13-Dec. 6, 8-8:50 p.m.; and Advanced Tumbling, Wednesdays, Sept. 15-Dec. 8, 8-8:50 p.m. The fee is $70. No classes will be held during Thanksgiving week. Register by Sept. 8.

Now and Later Borders for Experienced Scrapbookers – Seasoned scrapbookers will assemble page borders and complete an entire album with Mandi Park, Creative Memories Consultant., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 5:30-9 p.m., SAS Building, Room 166. The fee is $10 and there's a $20 kit fee (including all needed materials, which is payable to the instructor. Register by Sept. 9.

ONEStroke Painting (tm) – Technique of folk art painting taught by Kris Cranford that enhances almost anything, from glassware and pottery to furniture and walls. May take one or both classes, in the COB Building, Room 130, for $20 each with complete supply kits furnished and payable to the instructor. Basic Technique I will be offered Tuesday, Sept. 14, 6-9 p.m., with a kit fee of $22. Basic Technique II will create a design on a clay flowerpot, and is Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 6-9 p.m., with a kit fee of $18 for Basic Technique I students and $25 for new students (Contains an additional basic brush). Register by Sept. 9 or Oct. 12.

Heirloom Quilt – Join Marcella Bailey for this three-evening class, Tuesdays, Sept. 14-28, 6:30-9 p.m., in the FCS Building, Room 100. Participants will learn three- block patterns each evening to later join in a nine-block quilt. The fee is $30. Register by Sept. 9.

Hip Hop – Two age-ranged classes taught by Chris Chavez, meets Fridays, Sept. 17-Dec. 10 in GA-11. Ages 6-10 is offered from 6-6:50 p.m. while ages 11 and up is offered from 7-7:50 p.m. The fee is $70, with no classes on Nov. 26 during Thanksgiving. Register by Sept. 14.

Xeriscaping – Join Curtis Jaynes of Garden Sources, and learn how to have a beautiful yard with a limited amount of water, Saturday, Sept. 18, 1-5 p.m., JWLA Building, Room 115. The fee is $20. Register by Sept. 15.

Yoga -– Relax /Wednesdays, Sept. 1-Dec. 1, 7-7:50 p.m., GA-11 with Lisa Moyer. Averaging approximately $3 per class, the fee is only $40 for the semester. Half payments will be accepted Sept. 1 and Oct. 20. There will be no class Nov. 24, Thanksgiving week.

Scrapbooking with Kids -– Offered twice for your convenience for ages 8-16 years with Mandi Park, Creative Memories Consultant. Each student will create a 7 x 7 album in a simple and fun approach to scrapbooking. The fee is $10 with a $40 kit fee, payable to the instructor. Please bring 24-48 theme-oriented photos Thursdays, Sept. 2-23 or Oct. 4-25, 5-6:30 p.m., SAS Building, Room 166. Please register by Aug. 30 or Sept. 29, respectively.

Night Sky-A Look at Our Universe – Join astronomy enthusiast Mick Hoffman Friday, Sept. 3, 7-9 p.m., Science Building, Room 108 for an evening of stargazing. The fee is $10 per family and includes a planisphere. Please register by Aug. 31, and don't forget to bring your binoculars to class!

Cheerleading – With former ENMU Cheerleader captain and current Portales Junior High Cheerleading Sponsor, Amy Dornblaser. Cheer I for boys and girls ages 4-8 years will teach the basics Wednesdays, Sept. 8-Dec. 8, 6-6:50 p.m. Cheer II for boys and girls ages 9-13 years will teach jumping and stunting techniques as well as advanced dances, chants and motions, Wednesdays, Sept. 8-Dec. 8, 7-7:50 p.m. Flyer 101 for boys and girls ages 10-16 years will emphasize stunts, dismount variations and basket tosses with students rotating as bases and flyers, Saturdays, Sept. 11-Dec. 11, 9-9:50 a.m. All classes will be taught in Racquet Ball Court #1 off Gym 95, Greyhound Arena. Please wear t-shirt, shorts and athletic shoes. The fee is $70 with no classes Nov. 24 and 27, Thanksgiving week. Please register by Sept. 2.

Legal Nurse Consultant Training Course – 42 hours of legal concepts related to the health care industry with successful students receiving a certificate. This course is held for three weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sept. 11-26, COB-156. Tuition is $730. with an additional required textbook, $115 plus shipping and handling. Registration and textbook order can be placed by calling 1-800/522-7737 by Sept. 3.

Stained Glass – Learn with Amy Armenta Saturdays, Sept. 11-25, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Tech-112. All materials needed are included within a $10 materials fee except for colored glass for additional projects during the second and third classes. The fee is $75. Please plan an early lunch or take a short, on-your-own lunch break. Be sure to register by Sept. 8.

Designing Your Own Water Garden – Learn to design and create a water garden with Margaret Estrada, Saturday, Sept. 11, 1-5 p.m., COB-128. The fee is $15. Please register by Sept. 8.
