Announces Search to Begin For Vice President for Academic Affairs
– Due to the retirement of Dr. K. Paul Jones at the conclusion
of the 2004-05 year, the university will begin a search for a vice
president for Academic Affairs early in the fall semester. I anticipate
that a screening committee will be formed by mid-September and a
formal job announcement will be advertised nationally in early October.
I look forward to the cooperation of all faculty, staff and administration
as we proceed with this very important search.
Sincerely,
Steven G. Gamble

Materials
Needed for Weekend Activities and Games –
Student Activities and Organizations is hosting a late night program
called WEEKEND ACTIVITIES & GAMES (WAG). We are going to have
a craft night on Sept. 4 and we are looking for any creative materials
that could be used. If you have something lying around your house/office
that could be used, please bring your supplies to the Student Activities
and Organizations office located in 108 Campus Union. Just lay everything
on our conference table. Items can be but are not limited to fabric,
beads, beading wire, stickers, picture frames, scrap booking material
or anything that could be used to make some cool stuff. We need
all materials by Friday, Sept. 3. If you have any questions, please
contact Shannon Osborne at extension 2768.
BBA/MBA Advisor
to be at ENMU-R – Dr. Lee Weyant will be available
for BBA and MBA advising on the ENMU-R campus during the fall 2004
semester. Advising will be held Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. in IC205D
starting Sept. 1. Appointments are available by calling 505.624.7221
or 505.562.2342.
2004 Winter Break
Scheduled – The 2004 winter break has been
approved by the Regents to begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23
and end at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3. There have been some questions
regarding this schedule and if the days approved by the Regents
are in agreement with the handbooks. I hope I can clarify this issue.
If the handbooks were followed exactly, the following schedule would
be observed: Close Dec. 23 and 24 (for Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day); Open Dec. 27, 28 and 29; Close Dec. 30 and 31 (for New Year's
Eve and New Year's Day) Although the 2004 approved schedule is one
work day less than last year, it is still three work days longer
than what is established in the handbooks. Throughout the year,
ENMU gives 12 days as paid holidays, which is two more days than
federal employees receive.
I hope this alleviates any concerns you might have regarding our
winter holiday leave for 2004-2005. If you wish to take more time
off work, you may request vacation leave from your supervisor.

Clarification
About Back-to-School Meetings – There seems

on Aug. 13 are for staff only. Faculty do not need to attend. The

Presents Course on Women and Politics – A
new political science course offered at ENMU-Roswell this coming
fall semester is titled "Women, Power and Politics." The
course, PSCI 205, will involve an in-depth study of the history,
policies, and political behavior of women in politics as well as
the distribution of political power in Western societies, with an
emphasis on the United States. Students will hear from female guest
speakers who are active or formerly active in politics at local,
state and Federal levels. “The notion behind this course is
an objective look at how women have influenced our political world
through formation of, indirect and direct participation in, and
women's successes and failures within political structures,”
said Bill Kuehl, Criminal Justice instructor. The 3-credit-hour
course will meet on Fridays from 9-11:30 a.m. The fall semester
starts Aug. 30. For registration information, call 624.7149.
Operation
Heartbeat to Present Defibrillator in Chaves County
– The Roswell Correctional Center, south of Roswell, will
receive an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), courtesy of Operation
Heartbeat of Chaves County, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 16.
The AED was purchased with a New Mexico Sudden Cardiac Arrest state
grant. A number of county law enforcement agencies, fire departments,
and businesses have previously received AED’s through Operation
Heartbeat over the past couple of years. Peggy Harelson, Emergency
Medical Services/Training Center coordinator at ENMU-Roswell and
chairwoman of Operation Heartbeat for Chaves County, said the use
of an AED in the hands of a trained layperson can mean the difference
between life and death in a sudden cardiac arrest situation. She
said three people die of sudden cardiac arrest every seven minutes
in the United States. The defibrillator restarts the heart. The
EMS program at ENMU-Roswell is providing the AED training through
the American Heart Association. For more information on the AED's,
Public Access Defibrillator program or any American Heart Association
courses, call Harelson at 624.7249.

Clarification About Taxes on Tuition
Waivers – Several employees who have a bachelor's
degree have expressed a desire to sign up for a Wellness course
under the tuition waiver but are turned off by the misunderstanding
they have to pay taxes on the tuition waiver. Please be advised
that this is no longer true due to a new admission category established
over a year ago – post-baccalaureate admission. Anyone with
a bachelor's degree who wants to enroll only in undergraduate courses
will be admitted under post-baccalaureate admission. You will not
be taxed for any tuition waiver for an undergraduate class. Also,
if you are paying for an undergraduate course, you will be charged
at the undergraduate, not the graduate, rate.
But please note that no one in this category can take a graduate
course. If you want to take a graduate course, you have to receive
graduate admission. You will be charged graduate rates for all of
your courses, including undergraduate courses, and any tuition waiver
will be taxable.

Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Hot-Key Henry tip for today (Ctrl key series): While in the Word
application, have you ever wanted to quickly move through your document
a word at a time? Some people will press the left or right error
keys moving the cursor one character at a time until they get where
they need to go. Hot-Key Henry is too impatient to do this; he has
a hot-key to come to his and your rescue. To quickly move through
the sentence or paragraph a word at a time, press and hold down
the Ctrl key, then press the associated arrow key to move to the
left or to the right (Ctrl-Left Arrow or Ctrl-Right Arrow). To repeat
the move cursor function to the next word, keep pressing the arrow
key (while holding down the Ctrl key) until you reach where you
need to place the cursor.
Hot Key tip for today (Outlook series):
Have you started an email message and did not have time to finish
and you need to come back to it later? To save the unfinished message
to the Draft folder area, press and hold down the Ctrl key, then
press the S key (Ctrl-S). This will place the message in the Draft
folder where you can come back later, click on the message in the
Draft folder area and continue typing your message.
